This article is a review of 25 publications on ambulatory blood pressure monitoring(ABPM) and the importance of its results in everyday clinical practice. These studies, published in 2008-2011, were selected from the Scopus database, but are also available in Pubmed. They were prepared by researchers from around the world, concerned with the problems of proper control of blood pressure(BP), and of abnormalities in the circadian pattern of BP in patients with arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus or renal failure. In the first part of this article, I analyse publications focused on some nuances in the methodology of ABPM and recommend ways to avoid some traps, related not only to the individual patient but also to the device used and the technical staff. The next section is devoted to the advantages of ABPM as a diagnostic tool which enables clinicians to learn about patients' BP during sleep, and emphasizes the practical implications of this information for so-called chronotherapy. This section also presents some new studies on the prognostic value of ABPM in patients with cardiovascular(CV) risk. Some recent articles on the results of various methods of pharmacological treatment of arterial hypertension in different agegroups are then described. The observations presented in this article may be helpful not only for researchers interested in the chronobiology of the CV system, but also for general practitioners using ABPM.

Virulence factors of Enterococcus strains isolated from patients with inflammatory bowel disease

AIM: To determine the features of Enterococcus that contribute to the development and maintenance of the inflammatory process in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS: Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was applied to assess the presence of genes that encode virulence factors [surface aggregating protein (asa1), gelatinase (gelE), cytolysin (cylA), extracellular surface protein (esp) and hyaluronidase (hyl)] in the genomic DNA of 28 strains of Enterococcus isolated from the intestinal tissues of children with IBD (n =16) and of children without IBD (controls; n = 12). Additionally, strains with confirmed presence of the gelE gene were tested by PCR for the presence of quorum sensing genes (fsrA, fsrB, fsrC) that control the gelatinase production. Gelatinase activity was tested on agar plates containing 1.6% gelatin. We also analysed the ability of Enterococcus strains to release and decompose hydrogen peroxide (using Analytical Merckoquant peroxide test strips) and tested their ability to adhere to Caco-2 human gut epithelium cells and form biofilms in vitro. RESULTS: A comparison of the genomes of Enterococcus strains isolated from the inflamed mucosa of patients with IBD with those of the control group showed statistically significant differences in the frequency of theasa1 gene and thegelE gene. Furthermore, the cumulative occurrence of different virulence genes in the genome of a single strain ofEnterococcus isolated from the IBD patient group is greater than in a strain from the control group, although no significant difference was found. Statistically significant differences in the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and adherence to the Caco-2 epithelial cell line between the strains from the patient group and control group were demonstrated. This paper concerns the experimental investigations of strains in eccentrically compressed reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) sheets and strips. The main objective of the investigations, related with this paper, was to evaluate the influence of longitudinal CFRP reinforcement intensity and the manner of transverse CFRP reinforcement construction on strains and strengthening effectiveness of eccentrically compressed RC columns strengthened with CFRP strips and sheets. Six columns strengthened with CFRP materials and three control columns without strengthening were performed and investigated to reach stated objectives. The investigations were conducted on model specimens of columns with dimensions of 200×200 mm (cross-section) and 1500 mm (height). The specimens were subjected to immediate axial or eccentric compression. The specimens were strengthened with an external CFRP reinforcement in two manners-longitudinal CFRP strips and transverse bands made of CFRP sheet or longitudinal CFRP strips and a continuous jacket (on whole height of column) made of CFRP sheet. In the investigations maximum possible intensity of CFRP strengthening with one layer of strips was applied ρL=2.53%. The intensity of the external reinforcement of columns is described with a strengthening level ρL (the area of longitudinal CFRP strips-AL in relation to the area of concrete in the element-AC ). Performed experiments proved that longitudinal CFRP strengthening restricts strains on edges and causes the redistribution of internal forces in a cross-section. The redistribution appears with linear character of strains till failure.

This paper introduces to fluid state physics (fluid mechanics) a new interpretation of physical phenomena taking place in a fluid in motion. It introduces the base of a new theory claiming that every flow has its own internal structure of motion, which is definite organization of motion, rather than a "molecular chaos", known from the fluid statics. The paper introduces the new notion of structures vector fields of power and momentum and shows every Newtonian fluid flows are dual in character. It shows that the flow of Newtonian fluid has a dual character. It demonstrates on models and further in mathematical interpretation of physical phenomena. It introduces, on the one hand, the cycloidal motion model into the fluid mechanics, ad on the other hand an addition to the known, the classical model of Poiseuille laminar motion. The theory of dualism (double nature of physical phenomena) allows the description of selected characteristics of the flow, either by using the theory of cycloidal motion (semicycloidal), or by using the supplemented theory of laminar motion. The dualism theory is useful to describe each type of flows both, laminar and turbulent. This paper is only an introduction to the theory. It has been assigned number 1. It has been granted a high priority, since it contains basic concepts that will be used in others, following papers of long cycle.

The article presents the results of traffic noise measurement research conducted in Szczecinek Center. The measurements were supported by European initiative called CIVITAS Reanissance. The measurements results were used for preparation of documents related to Sustainable Urban Transport Mobility Plan and Noise Action Plan. Traffic congestion is the main source of noise emission in the center Szczecinek. So there was a need to assess the noise emission level. Noise measurements were part of the measure implemented in Szczecinek during the CIVITAS project. It was made during implementation one of the ten measures implemented in Szczecinek. The main objectives of the measure were preparation and acoustic maps of the city center and prognosis the change of traffic noise in the future.

The ash contents in coal particles were examined in the paper dependably on particle size and its density. So, the two-dimensional regressive function Z = Z(?, D) was the searched object, where Z is random variable describing ash contents, ?-density and D-particle diameter. This dependence was determined based on experimental data concerning the coal of type 31. For this coal, the method of ordinary kriging was applied to calculate the values of random variable Z. This method required the proper selection of so-called variogram function, in which four forms were considered in this paper in purpose to select the best solution. The given results were then evaluated by the mean standard error value and compared with empirical data.
