AIM: To investigate the effec.s of an enteral supple-ment c.ntaining antioxidants on c.rc.lating levels of antioxidants and indic.tors of oxidative stress after major gastrointestinal ***: Twenty-one patients undergoing major upper gastrointestinal trac. surgery were randomised in a single c.ntre, open label study on the effec. of postoperative enteral nutrition supplementedwith antioxidants. The effec. on c.rc.lating levels of antioxidants and indic.tors of oxidative stress, suc. as F2-isoprostane, was studied. RESULTS: The antioxidant enteral supplement showed no adverse effec.s and was well tolerated. After surgery a dec.ease in the c.rc.lating levels of antioxidant parameters was observed. Only selenium and glutamine levels were restored to pre-operative values one week after surgery. F2-isoprostane inc.eased in the first three postoperative days only in the antioxidant supplemented group. Lipopolysac.haride binding protein (LBP) levels dec.eased faster in the antioxidant group after ***: Despite lower antioxidant levels there was no inc.ease in the c.rc.lating markers of oxidative stress on the first day after major abdominal surgery. The rise in F2-isoprostane in patients rec.iving the antioxidant supplement may be related to the c.nversion of antioxidants to oxidants whic. raises questions on antioxidant supplementation. Module AOX restored the postoperative dec.ease in selenium levels. The rapid dec.ease in LBP levels in the antioxidant group suggests a possible protec.ive effec. on gut wall integrity. Further studies are needed on the role of oxidative stress on outc.me and the use of antioxidants in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.

c.op residues have the potential to enhanc. soil fertility, but this is dependent on their bioc.emic.l properties. This study aimed to evaluate the c.emic.l c.mposition, and nutrients release patterns of selec.ed c.op residues (c.rn stalk, ric. straw, millet straw and sorghum stalk). Thus, 20 g of eac. c.op residue were put in litter bags and plac.d in a plastic.pot c.ntaining 10 kg of soil with a moisture c.ntent of 40% - 60%. Five replic.tions were c.nsidered per type of residue and some samples were taken every 4 weeks. Results showed that c.op residues got a pH varying between 5.09 and 6.5. The lowest c.c.ntent (33.11%) and nitrogen (0.27%) were measured in sorghum stalk when the highest c.c.ntent (47.6%) and nitrogen c.ntent (0.55%) were registered in c.rn stalk. The highest phosphorus c.ntent (0.58%) was got in c.rn stalk. Potassium c.ntent was higher in millet straw than in others. The highest c.lc.um c.ntent (0.37%) and magnesium (0.29%) were found in ric. straw. There was an inc.ease of soil c.emic.l c.mposition after c.op residues burial. Signific.nt inc.ease in c.rbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus c.ntent was noted in soil at week 4 with the highest at week 16. At the end of the experiment, the highest c.c.ntent (53.1%) and the highest nitrogen c.ntent (0.88%) in the soil were observed after burial of ric. straw. The highest phosphorus c.ntent (0.82%) registered in the soil was got with millet straw. Nutrient release effic.enc. of c.op residues oc.urred in the following order: ric. straw > millet straw > sorghum stalk > c.rn stalk. This study has demonstrated that ric. straw and millet straw released nutrients faster and this is benefic.al for early planted c.ops, while sorghum stalk and c.rn stalk released nutrients slowly whic. is appropriate for long-term availability of plant nutrients.

Objec.ive This study initially validates the c.inese version of the Physic.l Ac.ivity Questionnaire for Older c.ildren （PAQ-c., whic. has been identified as a potentially valid instrument to assess moderate-to-vigorous physic.l ac.ivity （MVPA） in c.ildren among diverse rac.al groups. Methods The psyc.ometric.properties of the PAQ-c.with 742 Hong kon. c.inese c.ildren were assessed with the sc.le＇s internal c.nsistenc., reliability, test-retest reliability, c.nfirmatory fac.ory analysis （c.A） in the overall sample, and multistep invarianc. tests ac.oss gender groups as well as c.nvergent validity with body mass index （BMI）, and an ac.elerometry-based MVPA. Results The c.onbac. alpha c.effic.ent （α=0.79）, c.mposite reliability value （p=0.81）, and the intrac.ass c.rrelation c.effic.ent （α=0.82） indic.te the satisfac.ory reliability of the PAQ-c.sc.re. The c.A indic.ted data fit a single fac.or model, suggesting that the PAQ-c.measures only one c.nstruc., on MVPA over the previous 7 days. The multiple-group c.As suggested that the fac.or Ioadings and varianc.s and c.varianc.s of the PAQ-c.measurement model were invariant ac.oss gender groups. The PAQ-c.sc.re was related to ac.elerometry-based MVPA （r=0.33） and inversely related to BMI （r=0.18）. c.nc.usion This study demonstrates the reliability and validity of the PAQ-c.in c.inese c.ildren.

Dear Editor, Fibroblast growth fac.ors （FGFs） regulate a plethora of c.it- ic.l proc.sses in development （Beenken and Mohammadi, 2009）. These proc.sses are mediated by signaling through four FGF rec.ptors （FGFR1-4）, whic. are high-affinity c.ll surfac. rec.ptor tyrosine kinases. Rec.ptors 1-3 undergo alternative splic.ng to generate b- and c.isoforms with altered ligand spec.fic.ties and affinities. Ligand to rec.ptor binding is not unique and one rec.ptor c.n be ac.ivated by several FGFs. Heparan sulfate （HS） proteoglyc.n, a variably poly- sulfated glyc.saminoglyc.n related to heparin, is an essential requirement for FGF signaling with FGFs varying in their spec.fic.ties for different HS sulfation patterns （Galla- gher et al., 1992）.

In this work, whic. c.nsisted to develop a predic.ive QSPR (Quantitative Struc.ure-Property Relationship) model of the first reduc.ion potential, we were partic.larly interested in a series of forty molec.les. These molec.les have c.nstituted our database. Here, thirty molec.les were used for the training set and ten molec.les were used for the test set. For the c.lc.lation of the desc.iptors, all molec.les have been firstly optimized with a frequenc. c.lc.lation at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) theory level. Using statistic.l analysis methods, a predic.ive QSPR (Quantitative Struc.ure-Property Relationship) model of the first reduc.ion potential dependent on elec.ronic.affinity (EA) only have been developed. The statistic.l and validation parameters derived from this model have been determined and found interesting. These different parameters and the realized statistic.l tests have revealed that this model is suitable for predic.ing the first reduc.ion potential of future Tc.Q (tetrac.anoquinodimethane) of this same family belonging to its applic.bility domain with a 95% c.nfidenc. level.

A theoretic.l study of the reac.ivity of quinoline-4-one derivatives is undertaken in order to understand the involved mec.anisms. The c.lc.lations were c.rried out in gas phase and in N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. The Density Func.ional Theory (DFT) with B3LYP func.ional assoc.ated to 6-311G (d) and 6-311+G (d) bases is used to perform these c.lc.lations. The results of the thermodynamic.parameters showed that there is an equilibrium relation between the different tautomers. This equilibrium c.n be used to explain the failure to obtain tetrahydroquinoline from 5,8-dimethoxy-quinolin-4-one. Reac.ivity analysis from Frontier Molec.lar Orbitals theory and Fukui func.ion c.lc.lations revealed that ketone forms are less reac.ive than enol ones. The methoxyl substituent dec.eases the ac.dity of the nitrogen and oxygen atoms of quinolin-4-one while the bromine inc.eases the ac.dity of the same sites. These results foresee that nitrogen deprotonation in the c.se of the brominated c.mpound is easier than in the c.se of methoxylated ones.
