Effect of Behavioural Therapy on Depression in Adolescents with Sickle Cell Disease

Background: Depression, one of the commonest mental health problems in SCD, has high prevalence rates. While psychological therapies have been found to be beneficial in mild to moderate depression, their use as non-pharmacological methods amongst adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Nigeria, is still at its infancy. Objective: To determine the effect of behavioural activation therapy on depression in adolescents living with Sickle Cell Disease attending out-patient clinic at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. Method: The study was conducted in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria, between November 2017 to February 2018 (4 months) among adolescents living with SCD and depression attending out-patient clinic. A randomized control trial (RCT) was conducted among participants assigned to treatment (30) versus control (30) group. A manualized behavioral therapy programme developed was delivered to the treatment group. The data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. Pair T-test was used to compare the two groups across continuous variables, pre- and post intervention. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to determine treatment effects controlling for baseline scores. Result: After the intervention, the mean depression score reduced from 22.13 ± 3.08 to 13.02 ± 4.56 while Paediatric quality of life score increase from 62.57 ± 17.85 to 67.90 ± 7.99 in the treatment group (BDI, p < 0.001;PedsQL, p = 0.045). However, the pre- and post-intervention mean depression scores in the control group showed insignificant reduction from 22.23 ± 3.24 to 21.60 ± 2.75 and mean PedsQL from pre-intervention scores of 59.67 ± 12.60 to 56.73 ± 8.94 post intervention (BDI, p = 0.388;PedsQL, p = 0.242). The increasing influx of people to mountain base environments has opened up the area to a myriad of problems that threaten the liveability of the residents and the sustainability of the ***,sufficient empirical investigations have not looked at the particular issues that threaten their liveability *** the case of Idi-OriShasha mountain,this study examined the condition of informal urbanization at the mountain-base and equally investigated residents’living *** conducted questionnaire survey with closed and open-ended questions to collect data from 65 out of 533 houses within a buffer of 250 m from the mountain and retrieved 50 completed householdhead *** results revealed that majority of the residents were not satisfied living at the mountainbase because of the inadequate facilities that have contributed to their current living ***,mountain-base residents are liable to many liveability threats such as noise pollution,sleeplessness,building/wall cracks,destructive erosion,and water *** study recommends adequate infrastructural provision intervention in the area in order to upscale liveability dimensions and general residents’living ***,similar studies could be conducted elsewhere for validation and comparison of findings.

Impact Assessment of Poultry Discharge on the Physico-Chemical and Microbiological Water Quality of Olosuru Stream in Ikire, Southwestern Nigeria

This study investigated the impact assessment of poultry wastes discharge from a nearby poultry farm on the physico-chemical and microbiological water quality of Olosuru Stream, Ikire, Southwestern Nigeria. Five sampling stations (designated A, B, C, D and E) each located at 250 m interval along the course of the stream were selected for the study. The physico-chemical parameters in the water body vary in concentration along spatial, monthly and seasonal variation of Olosuru stream. The patterns of spatial distribution of physico-chemical parameters measured for the stream were generally similar except for calcium and hardness which showed significant difference for the five stations. The overall mean values of most of the parameters investigated;pH (7.45 ± 0.24), conductivity (628.69 ± 255.95 μs/cm), TDS (377.3 ± 153.55 mg/L), sulphate (10.89 ± 2.37 mg/L), BOD5 (3.19 ± 2.35 mg/L), cadmium, arsenic, manganese, total heterotrophic bacteria count (15,080.67 ± 20,250.67 cfu/ml), total coliform bacteria count (3226 ± 8426.70 cfu/ml) and total heterotrophic fungi count (2567.4 ± 7652.12 cfu/ml) were negatively impacted by poultry wastes dumping into the stream. The concentrations of most parameters exceeded recommended permissible limits of the Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water and World Health Organization for freshwater quality. The water source is therefore deemed not potable and poses hazards to public health if consumed without treatment. There is urgent need for improved management strategies of this water resource for continued sustainability.

The onset of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic had profound economic and societal repercussions *** nations managed to mitigate the spread of the virus sufficiently early through implementing digital frameworks and other containment ***,many countries in Africa faced significant challenges due to limited technological infrastructure for infection *** study investigated the efficacy of digital frameworks,with a specific focus on contact tracing apps,in stemming the spread of COVID-19 within *** investigated the potential impact of the use of these apps on reducing infection rates and improving public health ***,this study provided insights into the practical implementation of such frameworks and the challenges associated with their nationwide deployment.A structured user-oriented questionnaire was distributed to participants across different geopolitical zones in *** study employed association rule mining and descriptive statistics,setting a support threshold of 0.001 and confidence of 0.8,to uncover patterns of interest among *** analysis using Barnes–Hut t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding was conducted to derive reliable inferences from the *** findings revealed adoption rates of 69.7%and 93.8%for the minimum and maximum,respectively,in favor of using a COVID-19 contact tracing ***,71.6%of participants expressed concerns about the privacy of their personal information,whereas 74%showed an interest in receiving daily reports on estimated COVID-19 infection in their *** study presents empirical evidence highlighting the potential of contact tracing apps as valuable tools for monitoring and curbing the spread of COVID-19 and related diseases in Nigeria.
