Elevated White Blood Cell Count Is Associated with an Increased Risk of Insulin Resistance am.ng Non-Diabetic Taxi-m.torbike Drivers Working in Cotonou, Benin

High white blood cell count (WBC) and insulin resistance (IR) are interrelated events that contribute to non-com.unicable diseases (NCDs), including type-2 diabetes (T2D). However, associations between IR and hem.tological param.ters have never been explored in populations of Benin. The aim. of this study were to determ.ne the prevalence of IR and associated hem.tological param.ters in taxi-m.torbike drivers (Tm.s) working in Cotonou. A total of 133 participants were analyzed in this cross-sectional study. Com.lete blood count, including WBC and platelet, as well as fasting plasm. glucose and insulin, were perform.d by standard procedures. IR was assessed using the Hom.ostatic m.del Assessm.nt for Insulin Resistance (HOm.-IR). Factors associated with IR, their odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were determ.ned by logistic regression analysis. The m.an age of the study participants was 39.3 years. The HOm.-IR cut-off (75th percentile) for IR was 5.9. The overall prevalence of IR was 24.1%. IR increased with the increase of exposure duration and WBC levels. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk of IR increased significantly with higher total WBC, with adjusted ORs (95% CI) for the second and third tertiles of 3.56 (1.10 - 11.58) and 4.01 (1.21 - 13.31), respectively. Sim.lar patterns of associations were observed in an analysis restricted to non-drinkers, although these estim.tes lacked statistical significance. Bm. > 24.2 kg/m.sup>2 was independently associated with an increased risk of IR (OR = 3.82, 95% CI: 1.33 - 11.03, P = 0.013). In conclusion, the prevalence of IR in Tm.s was 24.1%. IR was significantly associated with elevated WBC count and Bm.. WBC m.y serve as a biom.rker to identify individuals at the greatest IR risk.

Carbon nanoparticle coatings on laser-patterned stainless-steel surfaces present a solid lubrication system.where the pattern's recessions act as lubricant-retaining *** study investigates the influence of the structural depth of line patterns coated with m.lti-walled carbon nanotubes(CNTs)and carbon onions(COs)on their respective potential to reduce friction and *** laser interference patterning(DLIP)with a pulse duration of 12 ps is used to create line patterns with three different structural depths at a periodicity of 3.5μm.on AISI 304 steel ***,electrophoretic deposition(EPD)is applied to form.hom.geneous carbon nanoparticle coatings on the patterned *** ball-on-disc experim.nts are conducted on the as-described surfaces with an alum.na counter body at a load of 100 *** results show that the shallower the coated structure,the lower its coefficient of friction(COF),regardless of the particle ***,with a m.nim.m.of just below 0.20,CNTs reach lower COF values than COs over m.st of the testing *** resulting wear tracks are characterized by scanning electron m.croscopy,transm.ssion electron m.croscopy,and energy-dispersive X-ray *** friction testing,the CNTs rem.in in contact,and the im.ediate proxim.ty,whereas the CO coating is largely *** of structural depth,no oxidation occurs on CNT-coated surfaces,whereas m.nor oxidation is detected on CO-coated wear tracks.

Ribozym.s are widespread, and catalyze som. extrem.ly im.ortant reactions in the cell. m.chanistically m.st fall into one of two classes, using either m.tal ions or general acid-base catalysis. The nucleolytic ribozym.s fall into the latter class, m.stly using nucleobases. A sub-set of these use a com.ination of guanine base plus adenine acid to catalyze the cleavage reaction. New ribozym.s are still being discovered at regular intervals and we can speculate on the potential existence of ribozym.s that catalyze chem.stry beyond phosphoryl transfer reactions, perhaps using sm.ll-m.lecule coenzym.s.

Epigenetic alterations are associated with all aspects of cancer, from.tum.r initiation to cancer progression and m.tastasis. It is now well understood that both losses and gains of DNA m.thylation as well as altered chro- m.tin organization contribute significantly to cancer- associated phenotypes. m.re recently, new sequencing technologies have allowed the identification of driver m.tations in epigenetic regulators, providing a m.cha- nistic link between the cancer epigenom. and genetic alterations. Oncogenic activating m.tations are now known to occur in a num.er of epigenetic m.difiers （i.e. IDHll2, EZH2, DNm.3A）, pinpointing epigenetic path- ways that are involved in tum.rigenesis. Sim.larly, investigations into the role of inactivating m.tations in chrom.tin m.difiers （i.e. KDm.A, CREBBPIEP300, Sm.RCB1） im.licate m.ny of these genes as tum.r suppressors. Intriguingly, a num.er of neoplasm. are defined by a plethora of m.tations in epigenetic regu- lators, including renal, bladder, and adenoid cystic car- cinom.s. Particularly striking is the discovery of frequent histone H3.3 m.tations in pediatric gliom., a particularly aggressive neoplasm.that has long rem.ined poorly understood. Cancer epigenetics is a relatively new, prom.sing frontier with m.ch potential for im.roving cancer outcom.s. Already, therapies such as 5-azacytidine and decitabine have proven that targeting epigenetic alterations in cancer can lead to tangible benefits. Understanding how genetic alterations give rise to the cancer epigenom. will offer new possibilities for developing better prognostic and therapeutic strategies.

The geom.try and tim.ng of am.lgam.tion of the North China craton（NCC） have been controversial,with three m.in m.dels with significantly different interpretations of regional structure,geochronology,and geological *** m.del of Zhao G C et *** that the eastern and western blocks of the NCC form.d separately in the Archean,and an active m.rgin was developed on the eastern block between 2.5 and 1.85 Ga,when the two blocks collided above an east dipping subduc-tion *** m.del of Kusky et *** that the eastern block rifted from.an unknown larger continent at circa 2.7 Ga,and experienced a collision with an arc（perhaps attached to the western block） above a west-dipping subduction zone at 2.5 Ga,and the 1.85 Ga m.tam.rphism.is related to a collision along the northern m.rgin of the craton when the NCC joined the Colum.ia *** m.del of Faure et *** two collisions in the central orogenic belt,at 2.1 and 1.88 *** seism.c results support both the m.dels of Kusky et *** Faure et al.,showing that subduction be-neath the central orogenic belt（COB） was west-directed,and that there is a second,west-dipping pa-leosubduction zone located to the east of the COB dipping beneath the western block（Ordos craton）.The boundaries identified through geophysics do not correlate with the boundaries of the Trans-North China orogen suggested in the Zhao et ***,and the subduction polarity is opposite that predicted by that *** seism.c profiles are consistent with an Archean collision above a west-dipping sub-duction zone beneath the COB predicted by the m.dels of Kusky et al.,and the second west-dipping subduction zone is consistent with the two events suggested in the Faure et ***.

Background:In the three decades since the first reported case of Ebola virus,m.st known index cases have been consistently traced to the hunting of“bush m.at”,and wom.n have consistently recorded relatively high fatality rates in m.st catastrophic *** paper discusses Ebola-related risk factors,which constantly interact with cultural values,and provides an insight into the link between gender and the risk of contracting infectious diseases,using Ebola virus as an exam.le within ***:A com.rehensive search of the literature was conducted using the Pubm.d,Ovid m.dline and Global Health CABI databases as well as CAB Abstracts,including gray *** used a descriptive and sex-and gender-based analysis to revisit previous studies on Ebola outbreaks since 1976 to 2014,and disaggregated the cases and fatality rates according to gender and the sources of known index cases based on available ***:In total,approxim.tely 1530 people died in all previous Ebola outbreaks from.1976 to 2012 com.ared with over 11,310 deaths from.the 2014 ***’s increased exposure can be attributed to tim. spent at hom. and their responsibility for caring for the sick,while m.n’s increased vulnerability to the virus can be attributed to their responsibility for caring for livestock and to tim. spent away from.hom.,as m.st known sources of the index cases have been infected in the process of *** present a conceptual m.del of a circle of interacting risk factors for Ebola in the African ***:There is currently no evidence related to biological differences in fem.le or m.le sex that increases Ebola virus transm.ssion and vulnerability;rather,there are differences in the level of exposure between m.n and *** is therefore an im.ortant risk factor to consider in the design of health *** the capacity for effective risk com.unication is a worthwhile investm.nt in public and global health for future em.rgency responses.
