Vocal cord paralysis can occur as a complication o surgery or anaesthesia,if permanent is a significant clinica *** detection is important to optimize the chance o repair,and avoid complications associated with an impaired *** algorithm to detect altered vocal cord function was presented based on wavelet packet analysis(WPA) and suppor vector machines(SVM),and compared with the Hoarseness Diagram method(HDm),which was reported as an objective voice quality evaluation approach and could be used for pathological voice *** using voice signals recorded from subjects before and after the procedure show high classification accuracy with the new algorithm,whereas HDm fails in the detection of a hoarse *** finding would help to develop a screening tool to detect the vocal structure damage during surgery.

Duplicate publication can introduce significant bias into a meta-analysis if studies are inadvertently included more than once. Many studies are published in more than one journal to maximize readership and impact of the study findings. Inclusion of multiple publications of the same study within a meta-analysis affords inappropriate weight to the duplicated data if reports of the same study are not linked together. As studies which have positive findings are more likely to be published in multiple journals this leads to a potential overestimate of the benefits of an intervention. Recent advances in immunosuppression strategies following liver transplantation have led to many studies investigating immunosuppressive regimes including immunosuppression monotherapy. In this letter we focus on a recently published meta-analysis by Lan et al investigating studies assessing immunosuppression monotherapy for liver transplantation. The authors claim to have identified fourteen separate randomised studies investigating immunosuppression monotherapy. Seven of the references appear to relate to only three studies which have been subject to duplicate publication. Several similarities can be identified in each of the duplicate publications including similar authorship, identical immunosuppression regimes, identical dates of enrolment and citation of the original publication in the subsequent manuscripts. We discuss the evidence of the duplicate publication inclusion in the meta-analysis.

We report a far-infrared absorption study of internal transitions of shallow Be acceptors in both bulk GaAs and a series of δ-doped GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum well samples with well thicknesses of 20,15 and 10 nm. Low temperature far-infrared absorp-tion measurements clearly show three principal absorption lines due to transitions of Be-acceptor states from the ground state to the first three odd-parity excited states,respec-tively. Using a variational principle,the 2p-1s transition energies of quantum confined Be acceptors are calculated as a function of the well width. It is found that the theoretical calculation of the 2pz → 1s transitions is in good agreement with the D-like line experi-mental data.

To investigate effects of smoking cannabidiol(CBD)-rich marijuana on driving ability and determine free CBD andΔ9-tetrahydrocannabinol(THC)concentrations in capillary blood samples,a randomised,double-blind,placebo-controlled,two-way crossover pilot study was conducted with 33 *** smoked a joint containing 500 mg of tobacco and either 500 mg of CBD-rich marijuana(16.6%total CBD;0.9%total THC)or 500 mg of a placebo substance,then performed three different dimensions of the Vienna Test System TRAFFIC examining reaction time,behaviour under stress,and concentration *** further assessment of participants’fitness to drive,three tests of balance and coordination were evaluated and vital signs(blood pressure and pulse)were *** blood spot samples of capillary blood were taken after smoking and after completion of the tests to determine the cannabinoid concentrations(CBD,THC and THC-metabolites).The results revealed no significant differences between the effects of smoking CBD-rich marijuana and placebo on reaction time,motor time,behaviour under stress,or concentration *** free CBD and THC concentrations in capillary blood were detected shortly after smoking,ranging between 2.6-440.0 ng/mL and 6.7-102.0 ng/mL,*** 45 min,capillary blood concentrations had already declined and were in the range of 1.9-135.0 ng/mL(free CBD)and 0.9-38.0 ng/mL(free THC).Although the observed levels of free THC concentrations have been reported to cause symptoms of impairment in previous studies in which THC-rich marijuana was smoked,no signs of impairment were found in the current *** finding suggests that higher CBD concentrations cause a negative allosteric effect in the endocannabinoid system,preventing the formation of such ***,it is recommended that consumers refrain from driving for several hours after smoking CBD-rich marijuana,as legal THC concentration limits may be exceeded.

AIM:To study the effect of circulating cell-free oxy-hemoglobin(FHb) on intestinal microcirculation and intestinal epithelial injury in a rat model. METHODS:To induce elevated intravascular circulating FHb,male Sprague-Dawley rats received water or FHb *** changes in jejunum,ileum and colon were evaluated using fluorescent *** injury was quantified as plasmatic release of ileal lipid binding protein(iLBP) and verified by histological analysis of the ileum. RESULTS:Water and FHb infusions resulted,when compared with saline infusion,in reduced intestinal microcirculation(after 30 min Pjejunum and colon) .Circulating FHb levels correlated significantly with release of iLBP(Spearman r=0.72,P=0.0011) .Epithelial cell injury of the villi was histologically observed after water and FHb infusions. CONCLUSION:This study shows that circulating FHb leads to a reduction in intestinal microcirculatory blood flow with marked injury to intestinal epithelial cells. These data support the hypothesis that circulating FHb contributes to the development of intestinal injury.

Background: There is considerable interest in implementing mobile scanning technology for on-farm body composition analysis on live *** experiments evaluated the use of dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA) as an accurate method of total body fat measurement in live ***: In Exp.1,visceral and whole body fat analysis was undertaken in sheep with body condition scores(BCS)in the range 2 to 3.25(scale 1: thin to 5: fat).The relationship of BCS was moderately correlated with visceral fat depot mass(r = 0.59,P 0.05,n = 9).There was a moderate correlation between DXA body fat and BCS(r = 0.70,P < 0.01,n = 17),and DXA body fat was highly correlated with chemical body fat(r = 0.81,P < 0.001,n = 9).In Exp.3,a series of five DXA scans,at 8-week intervals,was performed on growing sheep over a 32-week *** average BCS ranged from 2.39 ± 0.07(S.E.M.) to 3.05 ± 0.11 and the DXA body fat(%) ranged from 16.8 ± 0.8 to 24.2 ± *** was a moderate correlation between DXA body fat and BCS over the 32 weeks(r = 0.61,P < 0.001,n = 24).Conclusions: Overall,these experiments indicated that there was good agreement between BCS,DXA and chemical analysis for measuring total body fat in sheep,and that DXA scanning is a valid method for longitudinal measurement of total body fat in live sheep.

Comparisons of large igneous provinces(UPs)and black shales from different cratons can provide important constraints on Precambrian paleogeographic reconstructions and a better understanding of the environmental effects of large-scale volcanic events.A comparison of intraplate mafic events mostly interpreted as LIPs or portions of LIPs(LIP fragments/remnants due to continental breakup or erosion)from the North China Craton(NCC)and North Australian Craton(NAC)shows good correlation in the age range from 1800 Ma to 1300 Ma,and four robust age matches at ca.1790-1770 Ma,ca.1730 Ma,ca.1680-1670 Ma and ca.1320 Ma have been *** notably,the coeval ca.1320 Ma Yanliao LIP in the eastern-northern NCC and the Derim Derim-Galiwinku LIP in the NAC are also characterized by similar field occurences and dominantly subalkaline tholeiitic basalts and intraplate geochemical compositions,and are interpreted as portions of the same LIP,separated by continental *** to 1300 Ma,the NCC and NAC exhibit very different magmatic histories,indicating that separation of these two cratons occurred,likely subsequent to the ca.1320 Ma LIP event.A comparison of Paleo-Mesoproterozoic black shales from the NCC and NAC provides further evidence for close connections between these regions during this *** shales of the Chuanlianggou Formation in the northern NCC and the Cuizhuang Formation in the southern NCC were deposited in the age range ca.1650-1635 Ma and can be correlated with ca.1640-1635 Ma black shales in the Barney Creek Formation of the *** of black shales within the Xiamaling Formation in the NCC and the Velkerri and Kyalla formations of the McArthur Basin in the NAC occurred synchronously at ca.1380-1360 *** results from matching of LIP ages and black shales combined with paleomagnetic data show that the northern-northeastern margin of the NCC was connected to the northern margin of the NAC from ca.1800 Ma to 1300 *** long-lived late Pal

The most abundant immunoglobulin present in the human body is IgA. It has the highest concentrations at the mucosal lining and in biofluids such as milk and is the second most abundant class of antibodies in serum. We assessed the structural diversity and clonal repertoire of IgA1-containing molecular assemblies longitudinally in human serum and milk from three donors using a mass spectrometry-based approach. IgA-containing molecules purified from serum or milk were assessed by the release and subsequent analysis of their Fab fragments. Our data revealed that serum IgA1 consists of two distinct structural populations, namely monomeric IgA1 (∼80%) and dimeric joining (j-) chain coupled IgA1 (∼20%). Also, we confirmed that IgA1 in milk is present solely as secretory (S)IgA, consisting of two (∼50%), three (∼33%) or four (∼17%) IgA1 molecules assembled with a j-chain and secretory component (SC). Interestingly, the serum and milk IgA1-Fab repertoires were distinct between monomeric, and j-chain coupled dimeric IgA1. The serum dimeric j-chain coupled IgA1 repertoire contained several abundant clones also observed in the milk IgA1 repertoire. The latter repertoire had little to no overlap with the serum monomeric IgA1 repertoire. This suggests that human IgA1s have (at least) two distinct origins;one of these produces dimeric j-chain coupled IgA1 molecules, shared in human serum and milk, and another produces monomeric IgA1 ending up exclusively in serum.
