Counteracting effects on ENSO induced by ocean chlorophyll interannual variability and tropical instability wave-scale perturbations in the tropical Pacific

Large perturbations in chlorophyll(Chl)are observed to coexist at interannual and tropical instability wave(TIW)scales in the tropical Pacific;at present,their combined effects on El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)through ocean biologyinduced heating(OBH)feedbacks are not understood ***,a hybrid coupled model(HCM)for the atmosphere and ocean physics-biogeochemistry(AOPB)in the tropical Pacific is adopted to quantify how ENSO can be modulated by Chl perturbations at interannual and TIW scales,individually or collectively,*** HCM-based sensitivity experiments demonstrate a counteracting effect on ENSO:the bio-climate feedback due to large-scale Chl interannual variability acts to damp ENSO through its impact on upper-ocean stratification and vertical mixing,whereas that due to TIW-scale Chl perturbations tends to amplify *** ENSO simulations are sensitively dependent on the ways Chl effects are represented at these different scales,it is necessary to adequately take into account these related differential Chl effects in climate modeling.A bias source for ENSO simulations is illustrated that is related with the Chl effects in the tropical Pacific,adding in a new insight into interactions between the climate system and ocean ecosystem on different scales in the *** results reveal a level of complexity of ENSO modulations resulting from Chl effects at interannual and TIW scales,which are associated with ocean biogeochemical processes and their interactions with physical processes in the tropical Pacific.

Atomistic study of inverse size effect induced by interfacial plasticity in pearlitic multi-principal element alloy

Owing to the fine nano-laminated structure,the pearlitic multi-principal element alloy(PMPEA) exhibits excellent mechanical and tribological ***,the incomplete understanding of the size effect of its lamella thickness and the unclear understanding of the plasticity-interface interaction mechanism limit further optimization of *** this study,the FeCoNi/Ni_3Ti interface-mediated plastic deformation behavior in PMPEA and the variation of mechanical and tribological properties with lamella thickness within the nanoscale range using molecular dynamics(MD) simulation were *** results indicate that the mechanical and tribological properties of the PMPEA with lamella thicknesses below 10 nm have a significant inverse size effect,i.e.,the smaller the lamella thickness,the weaker the *** is because the plastic carrier-interface interaction mechanism changes from a strengthening mechanism that hinders dislocations to a weakening mechanism that promotes dislocations with the decreases in the lamella thickness,and the weakening effect becomes more pronounced as the lamella thickness decreases and the number of interfaces *** particular,the deformation behavior of Ni_3Ti lamellae changes from crystal-like to amorphous-like with decreasing ***,in the sample with larger lamella thickness,the occurrence of hierarchical slips in the body-centered cubic(BCC) phase due to the multiprincipal elements effect can better alleviate the stress concentration caused by the dislocation accumulation at the interface,so that the phase interface exhibits outstanding load-bearing *** the dislocation pattern in BCC phase shows a firm high-density cell,which makes the substrate exhibit a stable tribological response.

Intelligent laser-induced graphene sensor for multiplex probing catechol isomers

Herein,we unveil the intelligent detection of multiple catechol isomers in complex environments utilizing both laser-induced graphene(LIG)and artificial neural network(ANN).The large scale-up manufacturing of LIG-based sensors(LIGS)with three-electrode configuration on polyimide(PI)is achieved by direct laser-writing and screen-printing *** LIGS shows excellent electrochemical performance toward catechol isomers,i.e.,hydroquinone(1,4-dihydroxybenzene,HQ),catechol(1,2-dihydroxybenzene,CT),and resorcinol(1,3-dihydroxybenzene,RC),with a low limit of detection(LOD)(CC,0.079μmol/L;HQ,0.093μmol/L;RC,1.18μmol/L).Moreover,the ANN model is developed for machine-intelligent to predict concentrations of catechol isomers under an interfering environment via a single *** six unique parameters extracted from the differential pulse voltammetry(DPV)response,the machine learning-based regression provides a coefficient of correlation with 0.998 and is able to correctly predict the total and individual concentrations in complex river ***,this work provides a guide for the preparation and application of LIGS via facile and cost-efficient mass production and the development of an intelligent sensing platform based on the ANN model.

Why lowland riparian trees are difficult to use for streamflow reconstruction

Existing streamflow reconstructions based on tree-ring analysis mostly rely on species from upland,mainly montane areas,while lowland species(generally plain)areas are rarely *** limits the understanding of streamflow change history in the lowlands,which is an important basis for water resource *** study focused on Populus euphratica stands located along the main stream,eastern and western tributaries in the lower reaches of the Heihe River basin(HRb),in arid northwestern *** investigated how streamflow regulation interferes with ripar-ian trees in lowlands when they used for streamflow ***-ring width chronologies were developed and analyzed in conjunction with meteorological and hydrologic observation *** results show streamflow regulation leads in sharp fluctuations in the streamflow allocation between the eastern tributaries and western *** resulted in instability of the correlation between streamflow at the two tributaries and at the Zhengyixia hydrologic station,with corresponding fluctuations in radial growth of poplar trees on the banks of the two tributaries and at the *** regulation altered the natural patterns of seasonal streamflow below the station,changing the time window of poplar *** study provides useful insight into tree-ring width based streamflow reconstruction in the lowlands.

Suppressing the phase transition of ZrP_(2)O_(7), by defect and entropy regulation for high-temperature wave-transparent material application

ZrP_(2)O_(7) is a promising wave-transparent material due to its low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss,but its inherent phase transition characteristic at approximately 300℃ limits its high-temperature ***,suppressing the phase transition is necessary for ZrP_(2)O_(7),to serve in extremely harsh *** this work,introducing Ti and Hf into ZrP_(2)O_(7) causes significant lattice distortion and an increase in entropy,both of which synergistically limit the crystal structure *** addition,enhanced phonon scattering by mismatch of atomic mass and local distortion leads to a reduction in the thermal *** distortions also cause changes in both bond length and tilting angle,so that(Ti_(1/3)Zr_(1/3)Hf_(1/3))P_(2)O_(7) does not undergo sudden expansion as does ZrP_(2)O_(7).(Ti_(1/3)Zr_(1/3)Hf_(1/3))ZrP_(2)O_(7) maintains excellent dielectric properties,which highlights it as a promising high-temperature wave-transparent material.

Cation-Dipole Interaction-Induced Coacervate Underwater Adhesives in Natural Seawater

Significant progress has been made in wet adhesives for low salinity water,but exploration of general ionic adhesives for natural seawater is less developed because the high salinity could weaken interfacial bonding and shields electrostatic interactions,resulting in adhesion ***,the design of adhesives for natural seawater represents challenges less ***,a cationic polyelectrolyte(PECHIA)containing imidazolacetonitrile unit was explored to prepare adhesives enabled by natural *** combining the ion shielding effect with the“cation-dipole”interactions between PECHIA chains,aqueous solution of the PECHIA underwent coacervation and self-crosslinking in natural seawater,allowing for underwater adhesion to various substrates in *** instantaneous lap-shear and tensile adhesion strengths are 47 and 119 kPa,respectively,while the cured adhesive shows~739 k Pa tensile adhesion in natural *** design of PECHIA enables wet adhesives viable for applications in the diversified scenarios of natural seawater.

Impact of minimally invasive surgery on immune function and stress response in gastric cancer patients

BACKGROUND Gastric cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality *** open surgery for gastric cancer is often associated with significant morbidity and prolonged *** To evaluate the effectiveness of laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery as an alternative to traditional open surgery for gastric cancer,focusing on its potential to reduce trauma,accelerate recovery,and achieve comparable oncological *** This study retrospectively analyzed 203 patients with gastric cancer who underwent surgery at the Shanghai Health Medical College Affiliated Chongming Hospital from January 2020 to December *** patients were divided into two groups:Minimally invasive surgery group(n=102),who underwent laparoscopic gastrectomy,and open surgery group(n=101),who underwent traditional open *** compared surgical indicators(surgical incision size,intraop-erative blood loss,surgical duration,and number of lymph nodes dissected),recovery parameters(time to first flatus,time to start eating,time to ambulation,and length of hospital stay),immune function(levels of IgA,IgG,and IgM),intestinal barrier function(levels of D-lactic acid and diamine oxidase),and stress response(levels of C-reactive protein,interleukin-6,and procalcitonin).RESULTS The minimally invasive surgery group demonstrated significantly better outcomes in terms of surgical indicators,including smaller incisions,less blood loss,shorter surgery time,and more lymph nodes dissected(P<0.05 for all).Recovery was also faster in the minimally invasive surgery group,with earlier return of bowel function,earlier initiation of diet,quicker mobilization,and shorter hospital stays(P<0.05 for all).Furthermore,patients in the minimally invasive surgery group had better preserved immune function,superior intestinal barrier function,and a less pronounced stress response postoperatively(P<0.05 for all).CONCLUSION Laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery for gastric cancer not on

Cr-assisted low-temperature densification of(Ti,Zr,Nb,Ta,Mo)C high-entropy carbides with ultrafine grain and enhanced hardness

While the use of low-melting-point metals as sintering aids for high-entropy carbide(HEC)ceramics has been well established,their existence can compromise hardness due to residual metallic *** study demonstrates an innovative strategy to meet this challenge,where(Ti,Zr,Nb,Ta,Mo)C high-entropy carbide ceramics with ultrafine grains and enhanced hardness are obtained through chromium(Cr)-metal-assisted spark plasma sintering(SPS)at a temperature as low as 1600℃.The results show that the addition of 5 vol%Cr promotes the formation of highly densified single HEC phase ceramics with a high relative density(98.4%)and an ultrafine-grained microstructure(0.17μm).This low-temperature densification mechanism can be attributed to Cr’s solid-solution effect within the matrix and the increased carbon vacancies generated during *** grain size of the(Ti,Zr,Nb,Ta,Mo)C ceramics with 5 vol%Cr metal addition is significantly smaller than that of Cr-free(Ti,Zr,Nb,Ta,Mo)C ceramics sintered at 2000℃(3.03μm)or via traditional low-temperature liquid-phase sintering(1.3–1.5μm).Importantly,the addition of 5 vol%Cr substantially increased the hardness of the ceramics,with a remarkable increase from 23.57 to 28.16 GPa compared to that of the pure(Ti,Zr,Nb,Ta,Mo)C ceramics,owing to the fine-grain strengthening and solid-solution strengthening *** work highlights the uniqueness of Cr metal as a sintering aid in achieving densification and hardness improvements in(Ti,Zr,Nb,Ta,Mo)C ceramics,offering a promising strategy for improving the properties of HEC materials for further development in the near future.

Effect of Al content in molten steel on interaction between MgO-C refractory and SPHC steel

The effect of Al content in molten steel on the interaction between SPHC steel(0.005-0.068 wt.%Al,and 19×10^(-4)-58×10^(-4)wt.%O)and MgO-C refractory(11.63 wt.%C)was ***-metallic inclusions in the steel were examined at various periods(0,5,15,30,45,and 60 min)as well as the MgO-C interface after 60 min of corrosion at 1600℃.The results show that when MgO-C refractory comes into contact with SPHC steel,the refractory interface consists of three layers arranged from the innermost to the outermost,including the original refractory layer,the dense MgO layer,and the iron infiltration *** carbon in the MgO-C refractories and the Al content in the molten steel undergo a reaction with the MgO in the refractories,resulting in an increase in Mg concentration in the *** Al content in the molten steel from 0.005 to 0.068 wt.%causes a spinel layer to appear at the interface,and the disappearance time of Al_(2)O_(3) inclusions in the steel decreases from 60 to 30 min,while the average MgO content in inclusions ***,controlling the Al content in the molten steel and the smelting duration can help regulate the formation of spinel inclusionsinthe steel.
