Effect of soy protein supplementation in patients with chronic hepatitis C:A randomized clinical trial

AIM:To evaluate the effects of soy supplementation on insulin resistance,fatty liver and alanine aminotransferase(ALT) levels in non-diabetic patients with chronic hepatitis C(CHC).METHODS:In a prospective,randomized and singleblinded clinical trial,we compared patients with CHC who had casein as a supplement(n = 80)(control group),with patients who consumed a soy supplement diet(n = 80) [intervention group(IG)].Both groups received 32 g/d of protein for 12 ***:Patients' baseline features showed that 48.1% were overweight,43.7% had abdominal fat accumulation,34.7% had hepatic steatosis and 36.3% had an homeostasis model assessment index of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR) ≥ *** analysis showed that protein supplementation diet reduced hepatic steatosis in both groups;however,significant reductions in ALT levels occurred in the soy *** regression modeling indicated that in the presence of severe fibrosis(F3/F4),g glutamyl transferase elevation and high density lipoprotein(HDL) reduction,the intervention group had 75% less chance of developing hepatic steatosis(OR= 0.25;95% CI:0.06-0.82) and 55% less chance of presenting with an ALT level ≥ 1.5 × the upper limit of normal(ULN)(OR = 0.45,95% CI:0.22-0.89).Soy treatment did not have any effect on insulin resistance(OR = 1.92;95% CI:0.80-4.83),which might be attributed to the fact that the HOMAIR values at baseline in most of our patients were in the normal *** hepatic fibrosis,an ALT level > 1.5 × ULN and visceral fat were predictors of an HOMA-IR ≥ *** IG group had a reduced risk of an ALT level > 1.5 × *** HOMA-IR ≥ 3.0 and HDL decreased ALT levels and thus may improve liver inflammation in hepatitis C virus(HCV) patients;it also reduced hepatic steatosis in a subgroup of patients but did not change insulin *** should be considered in the nutritional care of HCV patients.

On an Exact Cylindrically Symmetric Solution in a Born-Infeld Type Theory of Gravity

In this work, we derive an exact vacuum solution for a cylindrically symmetric metric in an extended gravity theory developed by Novello, de Lorenci and Luciane (hereafter referred to as the NDL theory) which is inspired in the Born-Infeld theory. The main goal of this paper is to nd a cosmic string solution for the NDL theory. However, a careful analysis of the metric shows that it is asymptotically singular and therefore does not represent a cosmic string solution.

The complex meniscus tissue plays a critical role in the knee. The high susceptibility to injury has led to an intense pursuit for better tissue engineering regenerative strategies, where scaffolds play a major role. In this study, indirect printed hierarchical multilayered sca ffolds composed by a silk fibroin (SF) upper layer and an 80/20 (w/w) ratio of SF/ionic-doped β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) bottom layer were developed. Furthermore, a comparative analysis between two types of sca ffolds pro- duced using di fferent SF concentrations, i.e., 8% (w/v) (Hi8) and 16% (w/v) (Hi16) was performed. In terms of architecture and morphology, the produced sca ffolds presented homogeneous porosity in both layers and no di fferences were observed when comparing both sca ffolds. A decrease in terms of mechanical performance of the sca ffolds was observed when SF concentration decreased from 16 to 8% (w/v). Hi16 revealed a static compressive modulus of 0.66 ± 0.05 MPa and dynamical mechanical properties ranging from 2.17 ± 0.25 to 3.19 ± 0.38 MPa. By its turn, Hi8 presented a compressive modulus of 0.27 ± 0.08 MPa and dynamical mechanical properties ranging from 1.03 ± 0.08 MPa to 1.56 ± 0.13 MPa. In vitro bioactivity studies showed formation of apatite crystals onto the surface of Hi8 and Hi16 bottom layers. Human meniscus cells (hMCs) and human primary osteoblasts were cultured separately onto the top layer (SF8 and SF16) and bottom layer (SF8/TCP and SF16/TCP) of the hierarchical sca ffolds Hi8 and Hi16, respectively. Both cell types showed good adhesion and proliferation as denoted by the live/dead staining, Alamar Blue assay and DNA quanti fication analysis. Subcutaneous implantation in mice revealed weak in flammation and sca ffold’s integrity. Correlation between Rainfall and Mass Movements in North Coast Region of Sao Paulo State, Brazil for 2014-2018

The monitoring of related hourly and accumulated rainfall index requires that critical thresholds of accumulated 72 hours rainfall are updated frequently according with the factors and local conditions (natural and anthropic) of each specific risk area. The importance of empirical methods is fundamental to confirm the relationship between rainfall intensity and accumulated rainfall with the mass movement events, in order to establish the critical threshold values. The present work performs an evaluation of the record data of mass movement events occurred in Sao Paulo State North coast region for a 4-year period (2014 to 2018) considering different mass movement characteristics (slope type, magnitude and impact level). Some rainfall values were obtained to show that within these parameters an event related to natural and anthropic features was triggered. A database was created, sorting source of information and municipalities monitored, to implement the correlation between the mass movement events and the rainfall values. To elaborate the event’s map, reliable record data of localization of the mass movement events was selected, as well as the nearest possible raingauges of CEMAdeN (National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters);also the exact event triggering time, selection by the slope type, the magnitude and the impact level of the mass movement event. The rainfall values of these raingauges allowed the calculation of the accumulated rainfall index for 1, 3, 6, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours, with the adoption of the 72 hours index for this work. The correlation graphics are divided by the slope type, the magnitude and the impact level of the mass movement event. Different critical thresholds appear, classifying such event by the influence level of triggering factors, natural and/or anthropic.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) represents one of the most serious current health problems nowadays, considering the number of people affected, its complications and morbidities. A broad analysis was performed among diabetic patients attended in the Family Health Center from the district of Baú, in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State (Center-east Brazil), to examine the patterns of occurrence of overweight or obesity, values of glycated hemoglobin and the diagnostic of metabolic syndrome. The results show ahead a wide work that is necessary to prevent and early diagnose concerning DM, since only an intensive control will make it possible to alter the reality of the unfavorable prognosis documented.

Gigantic Abdominal Pseudocyst: An Unusual Evolution of the Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt

Background: The ventriculoperitoneal (VPS) shunt is the most common procedure in the treatment of hydrocephalus in children. Abdominal cerebrospinal fluid pseudocysts are a rare complication of the ventriculoperitoneal shunt with an incidence ranging from less than 1% to 10% and are more prevalent in children. The malfunction of the ventriculoperitoneal shunt can cause headaches, nausea, vomiting, altered level of consciousness and abdominal pain due to the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid. There is no consensus on which type of treatment is better in this case, but there are several available methods. Aim: To report an unusual case of a giant abdominal cerebrospinal fluid pseudocyst as a complication of the VPS. Case Presentation: Female 1 y/3 months old patient, less than 7 kg, that has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus prenatally, confirmed postnatally associated with an esophageal atresia and distal tracheoesophageal fistula (AE/FTE, Gross III), was admitted to our service with progressive abdominal distention without obstructive intestinal signs or peritoneal inflammatory signs. The CT scan of the abdomen showed a large liquid collection (estimated volume of 600 ml), centered on the umbilical region, diagnosed as a giant abdominal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pseudocyst from the VPS. On the Jebsen-Birkhoff Theorem in a Born-Infeld Type Theory of Gravity

In this paper we work with a special theory of gravity|the Novello-Di Lorenci-Luciane (hereby called NDL theory) which extends the Feynman-deser standard theoretical-fi eld approach to General Relativity. In the so-called NDL theory, matter interacts universally with gravity in accordance with the Weak Equivalence Principle, while gravitons have a nonlinear self-interaction. Our main aim in this work is to show that, though the NDL theory does not admit a Schwarzschild solution, the Jebsen-Birkhoff theorem is still valid in this framework.

We recognize the chemical composition of the acetonic extract of Rhizophora mangle barks(AERM)using mass spectrometry analysis[liquid chromatography(LC)–ESI–IT-MS/MS and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-MS(MALDI-TOF)].Analgesic activity was evaluated by formalin and tail-flick experimental ***-inflammatory activity was performed by paw edema test induced by carrageenan and 48/80 *** first series of experiments involved[LC]–FIA–IT-MS/MS with 11 separated catechins derivatives until degree of polymerization 3(DP3).The spectra obtained by MALDI-TOF analysis of the AERM presented two homologous series:one based on polymers of m/z 288 Da increments(up to DP12)and another series based on polymers of m/z[288?162]Da increments(up to DP11).In addition to these series of flavan-3-ol,each DP had a subset of masses with a variation of-16 Da(homologous series of afzelechins-m/z 873–3465 Da)and +16 Da(homologous series of gallocatechins-m/z 905–3497 Da).A similar pattern with homologous series of gallocatechins and afzelechins could also be observed for a fifth and a sixth monohexoside series:glucogallocatechins(m/z 779–3371)and glucoafzelechins(m/z 747–3339).The intraperitoneal administration of different doses of AERM(50,150 and 300 lg mL^(-1))have a morphine-like effect and intense anti-inflammatory activity.
