Candidate.pulsations of inte.e.t are.first ide.tifie. in ge.magne.ic time.se.ie. by inspe.tion. Time.se.ie. of the.e.＂training e.e.ts＂ are.re.re.e.te. in matrix form and transpose.multiplie. to ge.e.ate.time. domain covariance.matrice.. The.ranke. e.ge.ve.tors of this matrix are.store. as a fe.ture.of the.pulsation. In the.se.ond stage.of the.algorithm, a sliding window （approxi- mate.y the.width of the.training e.e.t） is move. across the.ve.tor-value. time.se.ie. comprising the.channe.s on which the.training e.e.t was obse.ve.. At e.ch window position, the.data covariance.matrix and associate. e.ge.- ve.tors are.calculate.. We.compare.the.orie.tation of the.dominant e.ge.ve.tors of the.training data to those.from the.windowe. data and flag windows whe.e.the.dominant e.ge.ve.tors dire.tions are.similar. This was succe.sful in automatically ide.tifying pulse. which share.polarization and appe.r to be.from the.same.source.proce.s. We.apply the.me.hod to a case.study of continuously sample. （50 Hz） data from six obse.vatorie., e.ch e.uippe. with thre.- compone.t induction coil magne.ome.e.s. We.e.amine.a 90-day inte.val of data associate. with a cluste. of four obse.vatorie. locate. within 50 km of Napa, California, toge.he. with two re.ote.re.e.e.ce.stations-one.100 km to the.north of the.cluste. and the.othe. 350 km south. Whe. the.training data contains signals pre.e.t in the.re.ote.re.e.e.ce.obse.vatorie., we.are.re.iably able.to ide.tify and e.tract global ge.magne.ic signals such as solar-ge.e.ate. noise. Whe. training data contains pulsations only obse.ve. in the.cluste. of local obse.vatorie., we.ide.tify se.e.al type. of non-plane.wave.signals having similar polarization.

With re.ard to ultimate.cause., strong case. can be.made.that bolide.i.e. me.e.r) impacts, large.igne.us province.LIP) e.uptions and bioe.olutionary e.e.ts have.e.ch trigge.e. one.or more.of the.Phane.ozoic Big Five.mass e.tinctions, and that te.tono-oce.nic change. have.trigge.e. some.se.ond-orde. e.tinction e.e.ts. Apart from bolide.impacts, othe. astronomical trigge.s(*** flare., gamma bursts and supe.nova e.plosions) re.ain e.tire.y in the.re.lm of spe.ulation.
