Development of health and depressive symptoms among Danish adolescents—Socioeconomic differences and effects of life-style

While the existence of social inequality in health in childhood as well as among adults is well established, research of mechanisms underlying this inequality is still sparse. The study aim was to report on the development of self-rated health and depressive symptoms from age 15 to18 years in a cohort study of Danish adolescents. Methods: The cohort comprised 3,681 individuals born in 1989, 3058 individuals answered the baseline questionnaire in 2004, and 2400 responded to a follow-up questionnaire in 2007, with 2181 individuals participating in both rounds (59% of the original cohort). Social background information of the participants was derived from a national register. For the analysis two variables indicating change in the two health indicators was computed by subtracting the 2007 levels of the variables from the levels experienced in 2004. Results: After 3 years, mean self-rated health (SRH) deteriorated slightly in adolescents (-0.24;95% CI = -0.28 to -0.19) across all socioeconomic status (SES) groups and depressive symptoms increased (0.64;95% CI = 0.52 to 0.75). High household income was protective for decrease in SRH (0.62;0.43 - 0.91). Negative lifestyle changes were associated with poorer SRH and more depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Self-rated health and depressive symptoms changed to the worse among Danish adolescents from age 15 to 18 years. Negative changes in several lifestyle factors were found to accompany the deterioration of health. This result stresses the intrinsic relationship between lifestyle changes and health and the possible positive effect of maintaining and enhancing positive lifestyle factors.

Highly insulating thermoplastic blends comprising a styrenic copolymer for direct‐current power cable insulation

The impact of the composition of blends comprising low‐density polyethylene(LDPE),isotactic polypropylene(PP)and a styrenic copolymer additive on the thermomechanical properties as well as the direct‐current(DC)electrical and thermal conductivity is *** presence of 5 weight percent(wt%)of the styrenic copolymer strongly reduces the amount of PP that is needed to enhance the storage modulus above the melting temperature of LDPE from 40 to 24 wt%.At the same time,the copolymer improves the consistency of the thermomechanical properties of the resulting ternary *** both the DC electrical and thermal conductivity strongly decrease with PP content,the addition of the styrenic copolymer appears to have little influence on either ***,PP in combination with small amounts of a styrenic copolymer not only allows to reinforce LDPE at elevated temperatures but also functions as an electrical conductivity‐reducing additive,which makes such thermoplastic ternary formulations possible candidates for the insulation of high‐voltage power cables.

Background and Aims:There is an unmet need for new bi-omarkers to improve diagnostics and prognostics in primary biliary cholangitis(PBC)and primary sclerosing cholangitis(PSC).Inter-α-inhibitor heavy chain 4(ITIH4)is an abun-dant,liver-produced protein,and its synthesis may be al-tered in liver *** investigated whether ITIH4 plas-ma concentrations were affected in PBC and PSC ***:We developed an immunoassay specific for ITIH4 and determined ITIH4 plasma concentrations in 66 PBC,126 PSC,92 autoimmune hepatitis(AIH),67 chronic hepatitis C(CHC),33 alcoholic hepatitis(AH)patients and 138 healthy controls(HCs).Hepatic ITIH4 expression was investigated by immunohistochemistry in ***:The mean plas-ma concentration of ITIH4 was almost doubled in PBC[409μg/mL(95%CI:388-431)]and 35%higher in PSC[308μg/mL,(95%CI:296-319)]compared with HCs[226μg/mL(95%CI:221-231);p<0.001].In PBC patients,ITIH4 correlated with IgM(rho=0.49,p<0.001).Responders to ursodeoxycholic acid treatment(UDCA)had lower levels of ITIH4 than incomplete responders[395μg/mL(95%CI:364-425)]vs.460μg/mL(95%CI:421-498);p=0.02].Four weeks of UDCA treatment had no effect(p=0.19).In-creased ITIH4 immunohistochemical staining was seen in a liver biopsy from a PBC ***4 levels in AIH[224μg/mL(95%CI:208-241)]and HCs were similar(p=0.8).ITIH4 levels were lower in AH[199μg/mL(95%CI:175-223)]and CHC[202μg/mL(192-212)]patients than in HCs(p<0.05).Conclusions:The plasma concentration of ITIH4 was highly elevated in patients with PBC and PSC,suggesting that ITIH4 should be further investigated as a biomarker in cholestatic liver disease.

An overview of cryptographic primitives for possible use in 5G and beyond

This survey overviews the potential use of cryptographic primitives in the fifth-generation mobile communications system(aka 5G) and beyond. It discusses the new security challenges that come with 5G and presents the upcoming security architecture. It shows the use of current cryptographic algorithms and discusses new algorithms or modifications of existing ones, that can be relevant. It also discusses the need for lightweight algorithms to meet the new use cases as well as the general demand for algorithms secure even when large quantum computers are available.

Are flight paths of nocturnal songbird migrants influenced by local coastlines at a peninsula？

By recording nocturnally migrating passerines with tracking radar we have investigated how coastlines affect the migrants’ flight paths. Birds could use coastlines as an orientation aid or as a reference cue to compensate for wind drift while migrating. However, on the small scale of Falsterbo Peninsula in southern Sweden, we found very little effect of coastlines on migrants flight paths, irrespective of altitude. We tracked 2 930 migrants in three autumn and two spring seasons, at altitudes from 60 up to 3 000 meters. We compared tracks of migrants flying in three different areas, which correspond to the three main coastlines, and can demonstrate that the orientation of the tracks did not differ in a way consistent with the coastlines between the areas in autumn, and showed only a slight effect in spring. This is in accordance with earlier infrared device monitoring in Fals-terbo, but contrary to earlier visual observations. It supports the view of nocturnally migrating passerines as mainly broad-front migrants. Even though the coastlines on the scale of the peninsula affected the flight paths very little, it is possible that the coastline has an effect on a larger regional scale, by migrants avoiding long sea crossings and thereby being funneled towards the peninsula, but this remains to be investigated.

Interspecific comparison of the flight performance between sparrowhawks and common buzzards migrating at the Falsterbo peninsula： A radar study

In order to compare the two species’ flight performance over the exposed and windy Falsterbo Peninsula, where thermal conditions seldomly are very favorable, we used tracking radar to study flight parameters of sparrowhawksAccipiter ni-susand common buzzardsButeo buteoduring autumn migration. The results showed a clear difference between sparrowhawks and common buzzards in their flight altitudes and speeds, and in the wind conditions they encountered. Common buzzards had higher flight altitudes and were more selective of wind. Flight altitude was negatively related to the wind speed, which was most pronounced for common buzzards. Sparrowhawks had higher mean air- and cross-country speeds than common buzzards. Airspeed was negatively related, whereas ground and cross-country speeds were positively related to the tailwind component for both raptors. The differences between sparrowhawks and buzzards could to a large degree be explained by a larger dependence on thermal soaring among the common buzzards; a strategy associated with selectivity for favourable thermal and wind conditions during migratory flight. An additional important explanation for the interspecific differences was the habit of the sparrowhawks to combine migratory flight with hunting for prey, which makes it prone to fly at lower altitudes and use flapping flight to a much larger degree than common buzzards which do not forage during their migratory passage of the Falsterbo Peninsula.

Reduced peripheral vascular reactivity in refractory angina pectoris:Effect of enhanced external counterpulsation

Objective To examine if the skin microvascular bed is altered and can be modified by enhanced external counterpulsation(EECP)in patients with chronic refractory *** Twenty patients diagnosed with refractory angina were divided into EECP(n=10)or no EECP(n=10)*** data were compared to matched healthy subjects(n=20).The cutaneous forearm microvascular blood flow was measured by Laser-Doppler *** vascular responsiveness to iontophoretic administration of acetylcholine(ACh),sodium nitroprusside(SNP)and local skin warming were *** of Canadian Cardiovascular Society(CCS)-class,blood pressure and plasma samples were *** EECP patients showed reduced CCS-class compared to no EECP(P<0.05).Both EECP and no EECP(P<0.05)groups had decreased systolic blood pressure(SBP)as compared to SBP at baseline(P<0.05).There was no difference in resting blood flow between the two refractory groups at baseline as well as after EECP and seven weeks of *** to heating,the responses to ACh and SNP in the cutaneous microcirculation were lower in both groups of refractory angina patients as compared to healthy subjects(P<0.05).EECP patients corresponded positively to the treatment shown by reduced plasma level of soluble interleukin-2 receptor and *** Refractory angina patients have reduced responsiveness in their cutaneous microcirculation to ACh,SNP and heat compared to healthy *** EECP reduced the CCS-class,this effect was not associated with improvements in responsiveness of the cutaneous microcirculation.

Vox Link—Combining sparse volumetric data and geometry for efficient rendering

Processing and visualizing large scale volumetric and geometric datasets is mission critical in an increasing number of applications in academic research as well as in commercial enterprise. Often the datasets are, or can be processed to become, *** this paper, we present Vox Link, a novel approach to render sparse volume data in a memory-efficient manner enabling interactive rendering on common, offthe-shelf graphics hardware. Our approach utilizes current GPU architectures for voxelizing, storing, and visualizing such datasets. It is based on the idea of perpixel linked lists(pp LL), an A-buffer implementation for order-independent transparency rendering. The method supports voxelization and rendering of dense semi-transparent geometry, sparse volume data, and implicit surface representations with a unified data structure. The proposed data structure also enables efficient simulation of global lighting effects such as reflection, refraction, and shadow ray evaluation.
