A Reliability-Based Strategy for the Analysis of Single Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

The development of power conversion systems based on fuel cells has been demanding reliability studies since the requirements associated with cost and durability of these technological products have become fundamental to their acceptance by the energy market. The experimental part of the reliability study presented in this work consisted of performing life tests with single proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The proposed reliability analysis methodology covered the application of qualitative and quantitative techniques. In the qualitative approach, a Failure Mode and Effect Analysis was developed in order to identify and evaluate all potential failures associated with the operation of fuel cells. In the quantitative approach, a statistical analysis was applied to the sample data generated in long-term steady-state tests of these devices. A two-parameter exponential distribution was fitted to data and the maximum likelihood estimate for the mean time to failure (MTTF) of the fuel cells was calculated. It is important to point out that the tests performed under the scope of this study were the first long-term experiments performed with the fuel cells produced in the laboratories of IPEN-CNEN/SP, Brazil. Although the results indicated that fuel cell performance and durability were still at a level below the targets normally established for similar commercial devices, the improvement of the main components of PEMFCs has been the objective of several projects developed at the institute. Thus, the main benefit brought by this study is the proposed methodology, which can be implemented as part of a reliability growth analysis of the fuel cells and can be integrated into the design process of these devices.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide and epidemiological projections predict growing cancer mortality rates in the next *** has a close relationship with the immune system and,although Th17 cells are known to play roles in the immune response against microorganisms and in autoimmunity,studies have emphasized their roles in cancer *** Th17 immune response profile is involved in several types of cancer including urogenital,respiratory,gastrointestinal,and skin *** type of immune response exerts pro and antitumor functions through several mechanisms,depending on the context of each tumor,including the protumor angiogenesis and exhaustion of T cells and the antitumor recruitment of T cells and neutrophils to the tumor *** other factors,the paradoxical behavior of Th17 cells in this setting has been attributed to its plasticity potential,which makes possible their conversion into other types of T cells such as Th17/Treg and Th17/Th1 ***(IL)-17 stands out among Th17-related cytokines since it modulates pathways and interacts with other cell profiles in the tumor microenvironment,which allow Th17 cells to prevail in ***,the IL-17 is able to mediate pro and antitumor processes that influence the development and progression of various cancers,being associated with variable clinical *** understanding of the relationship between the Th17 immune response and cancer as well as the singularities of carcinogenic processes in each type of tumor is crucial for the identification of new therapeutic targets.

Inductive Model Generation for Text Classification Using a Bipartite Heterogeneous Network

Algorithms for numeric data classification have been applied for text classification. Usually the vector space model is used to represent text collections. The characteristics of this representation such as sparsity and high dimensionality sometimes impair the quality of general-purpose classifiers. Networks can be used to represent text collections, avoiding the high sparsity and allowing to model relationships among different objects that compose a text collection. Such network- based representations can improve the quality of the classification results. One of the simplest ways to represent textual collections by a network is through a bipartite heterogeneous network, which is composed of objects that represent the documents connected to objects that represent the terms. Heterogeneous bipartite networks do not require computation of similarities or relations among the objects and can be used to model any type of text collection. Due to the advantages of representing text collections through bipartite heterogeneous networks, in this article we present a text classifier which builds a classification model using the structure of a bipartite heterogeneous network. Such an algorithm, referred to as IMBHN （Inductive Model Based on Bipartite Heterogeneous Network）, induces a classification model assigning weights to objects that represent the terms for each class of the text collection. An empirical evaluation using a large amount of text collections from different domains shows that the proposed IMBHN algorithm produces significantly better results than k-NN, C4.5, SVM, and Naive Bayes algorithms.

AIM:To investigate the effects of mangiferin on gastrointestinal transit(GIT) in normal and constipated mice,together with the possible ***:Intragastrically-administered charcoal mealwas used to measure GIT in overnight starved Swiss *** the first experiments,mangiferin(3 mg/kg,10 mg/kg,30 mg/kg,and 100 mg/kg,po) or tegaserod(1 mg/kg,ip) were administered 30 min before the charcoal meal to study their effects on normal *** the second series,mangiferin(30 mg/kg) was tested on delayed GIT induced by several different pharmacological agonists(morphine,clonidine,capsaicin) or antagonists(ondansetron,verapamil,and atropine) whereas in the third series,mangiferin(30 mg/kg,100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg) or tegaserod(1 mg/kg) were tested on 6 h fecal pellets outputted by freely fed *** ratio of wet to dry weight was calculated and used as a marker of fecal water ***:Mangiferin administered orally significantly(P < 0.05) accelerated GIT at 30 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg(89% and 93%,respectively),similarly to 5-hydroxytryptamine4(5-HT4) agonist tegaserod(81%) when compared to vehicle-treated control(63%).Co-administered mangiferin(30 mg/kg) totally reversed the inhibitory effect of opioid agonist morphine,5-HT3-receptor antagonist ondansetron and transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 receptor agonist capsaicin on GIT,but only to a partial extent with the GIT-delay induced by 2-adrenoceptor agonist clonidine,and calcium antagonist ***,co-administered atropine completely blocked the stimulant effect of mangiferin on GIT,suggesting the involvement of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor *** mangiferin significantly enhanced the 6 h fecal output at higher doses(245.5 ± 10.43 mg vs 161.9 ± 10.82 mg and 227.1 ± 20.11 mg vs 161.9 ± 10.82 mg of vehicle-treated control,at 30 and 100 mg/kg,P < 0.05,respectively),the effect of tegaserod was more potent(297.4 ± 7.42 mg vs 161.9 ± 10.82 mg of vehicle-treated control,P < 0.05).Unlik

Adaptive Thermal Comfort in Brazilian Schools by Building Performance Simulation (BPS)

Building performance simulation (BPS) is a crucial tool towards the design of projects better adapted its climatic context. In this sense, the objective of this research is to evaluate a method of thermal comfort analysis of schools in three Brazilian cities using BPS. The methodological procedures involved a literature review, in which the simulation tool and analysis method were chosen. Following simulations with the software DesignBuilder were performed using as study case a standard school typology designed by the General Coordination of Educational Infrastructure (CODIN/FNDE). This article evaluates its percentage occupied comfort hours in 3 reference cities: Cuiabá-MT, Brasília-DF, and Curitiba-PR. The results show respectively, for the cities of Curitiba, Brasília and Cuiabá, percentages of comfort hours of 76%, 70%, and 23%. The research states that the project must have different strategies for different climates. Finally, this article recommends this method should be applied to other cities and buildings.

Sublethal Doses of Insecticides Affect the Fecundity and Fertility of the <i>Chrysodeixis includens</i>?

The objective was to determine lethal concentrations and to evaluate the effects of sublethal doses of insecticides on Chrysodeixis includens under laboratory conditions. The standard population of C. includens was kept on artificial diet under controlled conditions (25°C ± 5°C, 60% ± 10 RU, 12:12 h). The active principles used were B. thuringiensis, Indoxacarb and Teflubenzuron. The CL25 and LC50 obtained from dose response curve (estimated from eight concentrations of each active principle) were diluted in water and applied to the back of third instar caterpillars and compared to the control (water). The insecticides used showed lethal and sublethal effects in C. includens. Bacillus thuringiensis was 6.21 and 2.79 times more toxic to soybean looper when compared to the products Indoxacarb and Teflubenzuron, respectively. Insecticides applied to the caterpillars reduced survival and affected the biomass gain with increased larvae and pupae longevity, with a significant reduction in fertility (40%) and fecundity (94.97%) in adults. In the present study it was observed that both survival and larval biomass gain have a direct effect on fecundity and fertility, respectively. Therefore the active ingredients Indoxacarb, Teflubenzuron and B. thuringiensis can be used in rotation as a tool in the C. includens.

Repeatability of Pre-Harvest Sprouting in Wheat

This study aimed to detect genotypic differences in the resistance to sprouting of wheat grains, evaluate the effectiveness of different methods for inducing sprouting and identify, using repeatability estimates, the minimum number of spikes necessary for the adequate evaluation of the percentage of grain sprouting in the spike in order to assist in the selection of superior genotypes in breeding programs. Spikes from four wheat cultivars (Frontana, IPR Catuara, Quartzo and BRS 220) were evaluated using three methods for inducing grain sprouting in the spike (water immersion, rainfall simulation and germination chamber). To determine the most efficient method, repeatability coefficients were estimated through analysis of variance, principal components analysis and structural analysis based on correlation and covariance matrices. The induction of sprouting by immersion in water was the most effective method for indicating genotypic differences and may be used in breeding programs for this purpose. The repeatability method based on the components of covariance was more efficient. A minimum of 11 spikes is required to make a high-reliability estimate of the percentage of sprouted grains in the spike.

Comparative Study of <i>Helicoverpa armigera</i>(Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Preference for Bt and Non-Bt Soybean Cultivars

Studies on the behavior of Helicoverpa armigera in relation to soybean cultivars expressing Bt proteins are fundamentally important for IPM. We determine the no-choice and feeding choice of H. armigera, the no-choice and oviposition choice in different Bt and non-Bt soybeans cultivars. In the first step it was carried out the experiment to determine the no-choice and food choice in test for 12 Bt and non-Bt soybean cultivars. Simultaneously the consumption was determined. In a second step it was evaluated the no-choice and oviposition choice in different soybean cultivars. Helicoverpa armigera caterpillars showed neither attractiveness and preference for food nor attractiveness and oviposition preference for Bt and non-Bt soybean leaves when simultaneously contrasting the tested cultivars. This study showed that Bt toxin did not influence the oviposition preference, and H. armigera adults did not differentiate Bt and non-Bt soybean cultivars for oviposition indicating no behavioral preference. Third instar caterpillars showed no discrimination between Bt and non-Bt soybean leaves. Research in this area must focus on the possibility of widespread planting of genetically modified soybeans containing the Bt protein, which is associated with selection pressure and the behavior of pest species in relation to their hosts, as well as on the adequacy of management tactics that is able to prevent the loss of technology efficiency.

Association of Vitamin D Levels with the Metabolic Profile and Sexual Maturation Stage of Adolescents

The deficiency of Vitamin D (VD) is widely prevalent worldwide in adults, but many studies show that this deficiency also affects adolescents and may be considered a global public health problem. The VD levels are particularly significant in adolescents since it influences several aspects of growth, development, and puberty. During this phase of life, both girls and boys develop reproductive aspects, and secondary sexual characteristics and the adequate nutritional status appear to be the prerequisite for normal pubertal development. Due to the importance of VD in adolescents, the objective of this study was to investigate the association of the levels of this vitamin with glycemic, lipid, and anthropometric profile and sexual maturation stages of adolescents. Anthropometric (weight and height) and biochemical (fasting glycemia, total cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c, and triglycerides) data and VD levels were collected in 67 adolescents. 66% of the adolescents showed VD sufficiency, 28% insufficiency, and 6% showed the deficiency. There was a significant difference in VD levels between the stages of sexual maturation for boys and girls. Overweight patients had lower serum VD levels. The correlation analysis indicated a positive correlation between VD and fasting glycemia and HDL-c, but with no significant difference. A negative correlation was observed between VD and cholesterol, LDL-c and triglycerides, but also with no significant difference. Once VD is crucial for bone health, and as it seems it is necessary to the homeostasis of glycemia, lipids, and body weight, we suggest that more studies should be conducted to confirm the precise role of this vitamin in the promotion and maintenance of health in this population.

Comparison of Three Experimental Models for Rat Osteoarthritis Induction

Background: Osteoarthritis is a slowly progressive and debilitating disease with high prevalence in adult population. Knee is one of the joints most affected by this disorder. There are several models for animals’ osteoarthritis induction, however it is not identified any paper that compares these techniques. The present study was aimed to define the most appropriate model for rats osteoarthritis induction. Material and Methods: 40 Wistar rats were distributed into 4 groups of 10 animals each: normality group (NG);meniscectomy group (MG);quinolone group (QG) and iodoacetate group (IG). Radiographic images of the rat’s knees were analyzed as well as the amount of chondrocytes in the epiphyseal and articular cartilage. Results: In the radiographic analysis, there was a low correlation between the raters. Regarding the amount of chondrocytes in the epiphyseal cartilage, it was noticed that the IG and QG groups had fewer chondrocytes than NG, in contrast to MG that reported similar results to normality (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between IG and QG groups (p > 0.05). Regarding the amount of chondrocytes in articular cartilage, it was noticed that the IG group showed fewer chondrocytes than NG (p 0.05). There was no significant difference between QG and MG groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Intraarticular injection of iodoacetate in rats is the model with greatest effect on reduction of chondrocytes amount.
