Use of radiation in strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae:A new technique for industrial applications

During the industrial fermentation process in the production of fuel ethanol, yeasts are subject to several stressing conditions. The survival and the permanence of strains introduced in the process correlate with the capability of these yeasts in resisting to physical and chemical stresses, as well as their recovering ability to compete with contaminating micro-organisms commonly present in this industrial process. We aim at the selection of Saccharomyces cere visiae strains having this capability and ability. In this sense, cultivations of strains with industrial interest were irradiated with gammas ray at a wide dose interval. Growing curves for the strains were analyzed by means of their relative growth, a new concept here introduced, which allows a better understanding of the growing and recovering processes following radiative stress. It was found that gamma radiation could be used as an alternative method to quantify growing capabilities of S. cerevisiae strains under stressing conditions. It was also shown that this radiological method could be utilized as an additional procedure to select best robust industrial strains. This radiological method simplifies traditional analysis of strain viability, by avoiding the great number of necessary and consecutive fermentation assays.

Carbon-based solid lubricants are excellent options to reduce friction and wear,especially with the carbon capability to adopt different allotropes *** the macroscale,these materials are sheared on the contact along with debris and contaminants to form tribolayers that govern the tribosystem *** a recently developed advanced Raman analysis on the tribolayers,it was possible to quantify the contactinduced defects in the crystalline structure of a wide range of allotropes of carbon-based solid lubricants,from graphite and carbide-derived carbon particles to multi-layer graphene and carbon *** addition,these materials were tested under various dry sliding conditions,with different geometries,topographies,and solid-lubricant application *** of the initial tribosystem conditions and allotrope level of atomic ordering,there is a remarkable trend of increasing the point and line defects density until a specific saturation limit in the same order of magnitude for all the materials tested.

Prevalence of Latent Tuberculosis Infection [LTBI] in Prison officers: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

This study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the LTBI prevalence in prison officers worldwide. A systematic search was performed in PubMed, WoS, Embase, and BVS, including all articles related to LTBI prevalence and risk factors. After critical evaluation and qualitative synthesis of the identified articles, a meta-analysis was used. Five studies carried out between 2012 and 2022 were included, with a total sample size of 1718 prison officers. The overall LTBI prevalence was 50% [95% confidence interval [CI]: 48% - 52%;n = 816], with high heterogeneity between studies. Smoking [oR = 1.76;CI 95% = 1.26 - 2.46] and males [oR = 2.08;CI 95% = 1.31 - 3.31] were positively related to a higher LTBI prevalence among prison officers. Thus, preventive measures and the rapid and accurate diagnosis of new cases should be emphasized to ensure tuberculosis control, especially among risk groups such as prison officers.

Landslide susceptibility mapping using the infinite slope,SHALSTAB,SINMAP,and TRIGRS models in Serra do Mar,Brazil

Slope failure triggered by heavy rainfall is very common in tropical and subtropical regions and a cause of major social and economic *** susceptibility maps can be generated using geographical information systems(GIS)and limit equilibrium slope stability models coupled or not to hydrological *** study investigated the efficacy of four models used for slope stability analysis in predicting landslide-susceptible areas in a GIS *** selected models are the infinite slope,the shallow slope stability model(SHALSTAB),the stability index mapping(SINMAP),and the transient rainfall infiltration and grid-based regional slope-stability(TRIGRS).For comparisons,the authors(a)included the infinite slope equation in all models,(b)clearly defined input parameters and failure triggering mechanisms for each simulation(soil depth,water table height,rainfall intensity),(c)determined appropriate values for each model to obtain stability levels that represented similar hydrogeotechnical conditions,and(d)considered upper-third areas of landslide scars to estimate the reliability of susceptibility maps using validation *** intense rainfall event occurred in Serra do Mar,Brazil in January 2014 triggered hundreds of landslides and was used for back analysis and evaluation of the slope stability analysis *** rainfall intensity is not considered,the four models produced very similar *** most reliable landslide susceptibility map was generated using TRIGRS and considering the granite residual granite soils geological-geotechnical unit,subjected to a rainfall intensity of 210 mm for 2 h under unsaturated conditions.

The Global Leprosy Assessment Index(GLAI):A new approach for measuring the severity of disease in Brazil

Background:In Brazil,the Ministry of Health(MH)monitors leprosy using 15 indicators,with the aim of imple-menting and evaluating evidence-based public ***,an excessive number of variables can compli-cate the definition of objectives and verification of epidemiological ***:In this paper,we develop the Global Leprosy Assessment Index(GLAI),a composite measure that integrates two key dimensions for the control the disease:epidemiological and *** a confirmatory factor analysis model to examine 2020 state-level data,we have standardized GLAI to a range of 0 to ***:Higher values within this range indicate a greater severity of the *** mean value of the GLAI was 0.67,with a standard deviation of *** has the highest value,followed by Paraíba with 0.88 while Tocantins records the lowest value of the indicator,followed by Mato Grosso with *** epidemiological and operational indicators have a positive but statistically insignificant correlation(r=0.25;p-value=0.20).Conclusions:The development of evidence-based public policies depends on the availability of valid and reliable *** GLAI presented in this paper is easily reproducible and can be used to monitor the disease with disaggregated ***,the GLAI has the potential to serve as a more robust parameter for evaluating the impact of actions designed to eradicate leprosy in Brazil.

Development and application of a SPE-LC-QToF method for the quantification of micropollutants of emerging concern in drinking waters from the Brazilian capital

The Brazilian Federal District is located under a savannah climate characterized by an intense dry season,resulting in severe problems related to water *** situation motivates the search for alternate water sources,leading to the indirect water reuse in the Paranoa Lake,an artificial reservoir located in the heart of the Brazilian *** work aimed the assessment of 35 micropollutants of emerging concern by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass ***-phase extraction conditions(oasis HLB)were optimized by a factorial *** were then assessed in 0.45 mm filtered samples(1 L)under three different pH by matrix-matched calibration with standard additions and high-resolution multiple reaction monitoring ***,bisphenol A and the insect repellant DEET were detected in all investigated samples(n=14),followed by atrazine(86%of the samples),carbamazepine(71%),paraxanthine(71%),mefenamic acid(64%),nicotine(57%),atenolol(43%)and sulfamethoxazole(43%).Although not frequently detected,the reproductive hormones,estrone,17β-estradiol and estriol,as well as the ovulation inhibitor 17α-ethinylestradiol were detected in a sample from the Paranoa Lake WTP in concentrations ranging from 3.71±0.08 and 5.6±0.1 ng L^-*** these levels,risk quotients indicate the potential for adverse effects to both human health and the environment.

Inductive Model Generation for Text Classification Using a Bipartite Heterogeneous Network

Algorithms for numeric data classification have been applied for text classification. Usually the vector space model is used to represent text collections. The characteristics of this representation such as sparsity and high dimensionality sometimes impair the quality of general-purpose classifiers. Networks can be used to represent text collections, avoiding the high sparsity and allowing to model relationships among different objects that compose a text collection. Such network- based representations can improve the quality of the classification results. one of the simplest ways to represent textual collections by a network is through a bipartite heterogeneous network, which is composed of objects that represent the documents connected to objects that represent the terms. Heterogeneous bipartite networks do not require computation of similarities or relations among the objects and can be used to model any type of text collection. Due to the advantages of representing text collections through bipartite heterogeneous networks, in this article we present a text classifier which builds a classification model using the structure of a bipartite heterogeneous network. Such an algorithm, referred to as IMBHN （Inductive Model Based on Bipartite Heterogeneous Network）, induces a classification model assigning weights to objects that represent the terms for each class of the text collection. An empirical evaluation using a large amount of text collections from different domains shows that the proposed IMBHN algorithm produces significantly better results than k-NN, C4.5, SVM, and Naive Bayes algorithms.

Spatial-temporal distribution of fatal yellowing in different oil palm genetic materials in eastern amazon

oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is one of the agricultural crops with the greatest potentialfor vegetable oil production in Brazil. However, a disease of unknown etiology popularlyknown as Fatal Yellowin (FY) has caused damage to Brazilian farmers particularly in theeastern region of the Amazon. So, the objective of this study was to evaluate the spatialdependence of FY on three oil palm genotypes, grown for many years in an organic produc-tion system in the Amazon region. The study area had 4104 ha, divided into 139 plots. Ineach plot, the monthly incidence of disease was monitored forming a database. The num-ber of diseased plants per year, number of accumulated diseased plants, number of dis-eased plants per hectare, growth rate of diseased plants and incidence of accumulateddisease were evaluated. The results indicated spatial distribution of the variables adjustedto the gaussian, spherical and exponential models, with predominance of the first *** increases the purpose that FY is caused by biotic factors. The highest range achievedin the study was 2929 m indicating the susceptibility of the tested genotypes. Some plotsclose to the river had the highest incidence of the disease on the study, probably associatedwith higher soil moisture.

The effects of the addition of 5.0 wt.%Ni to an Al−6wt.%Cu alloy on the solidification cooling rate(T),growth rate(V_(L)),length scale of the representative phase of the microstructure,morphology/distribution of intermetallic compounds(IMCs)and on the resulting properties were *** and tensile properties were determined on samples solidified under a wide range of T along the length of a directionally solidified Al−6wt.%Cu−5.0wt.%Ni alloy *** growth laws were derived relating the evolution of primary(λ_(1))and secondary(λ_(2))dendritic spacings with T and V_(L).The elongation to fracture(δ)and the ultimate tensile strength(σ_(U))were correlated with the inverse of the square root of λ_(1) along the length of the casting by Hall−Petch type experimental *** reinforcing effect provided by the addition of Ni in the alloy composition is shown to surpass that provided by the refinement of the dendritic *** highest corrosion resistance is associated with a microstructure formed by thin IMCs evenly distributed in the interdendritic regions,typical of samples that are solidified under higher T.
