Insecticides from different chemical groups were tested by laboratory bioassay to verify the percentage mortality of Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner 1808) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The experiment was conducted in the Crop Science laboratory—Prof. CinobelinaElvas Campus—UFPI, Bom Jesus, PI, from January to June, 2013. The populations utilized came from the University’s own insect breeding laboratories. Third instar larvae of H. armigera were used to conduct the bioassay. The experimental design was fully randomized, with 13 treatments and four replications. Five larvae were used per replication, with 12 insecticides from 9 different chemical groups and a control. Each treatment consisted of three doses. The methods of application used were topical contact and ingestion in artificial diet. According to the results the percentage mortality of H. armigera larvae varied among the treatments. The results demonstrated that chlorpyrifos and spinosad were effective against third instar H. armigera larvae both on contact and by ingestion. Flubendiamide, acephate, methomyl, Bacillus thuringiensis, dimethoate, chlorantraniliprole and fipronil had good responses to control of H. armigera.

Studies on the behavior of Helicoverpa armigera in relation to soybean cultivars expressing Bt proteins are fundamentally important for IPM. We determine the no-choice and feeding choice of H. armigera, the no-choice and oviposition choice in different Bt and non-Bt soybeans cultivars. In the first step it was carried out the experiment to determine the no-choice and food choice in test for 12 Bt and non-Bt soybean cultivars. Simultaneously the consumption was determined. In a second step it was evaluated the no-choice and oviposition choice in different soybean cultivars. Helicoverpa armigera caterpillars showed neither attractiveness and preference for food nor attractiveness and oviposition preference for Bt and non-Bt soybean leaves when simultaneously contrasting the tested cultivars. This study showed that Bt toxin did not influence the oviposition preference, and H. armigera adults did not differentiate Bt and non-Bt soybean cultivars for oviposition indicating no behavioral preference. Third instar caterpillars showed no discrimination between Bt and non-Bt soybean leaves. Research in this area must focus on the possibility of widespread planting of genetically modified soybeans containing the Bt protein, which is associated with selection pressure and the behavior of pest species in relation to their hosts, as well as on the adequacy of management tactics that is able to prevent the loss of technology efficiency.

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is one of the agricultural crops with the greatest potentialfor vegetable oil production in Brazil. However, a disease of unknown etiology popularlyknown as Fatal Yellowin (FY) has caused damage to Brazilian farmers particularly in theeastern region of the Amazon. So, the objective of this study was to evaluate the spatialdependence of FY on three oil palm genotypes, grown for many years in an organic produc-tion system in the Amazon region. The study area had 4104 ha, divided into 139 plots. Ineach plot, the monthly incidence of disease was monitored forming a database. The num-ber of diseased plants per year, number of accumulated diseased plants, number of dis-eased plants per hectare, growth rate of diseased plants and incidence of accumulateddisease were evaluated. The results indicated spatial distribution of the variables adjustedto the gaussian, spherical and exponential models, with predominance of the first *** increases the purpose that FY is caused by biotic factors. The highest range achievedin the study was 2929 m indicating the susceptibility of the tested genotypes. Some plotsclose to the river had the highest incidence of the disease on the study, probably associatedwith higher soil moisture.

Tolerogenic dendritic cells （DCs） are widely studied for their possible use in the treatment of inflammatory disorders, such as autoimmune diseases. One of the obstacles for the use of this cell-based therapy is the characterization of drugs that are able to modulate DCs. We have previously shown that chloroquine （CQ）, an antimalarial agent, has the ability to modulate DCs towards a tolerogenic phenotype.1 These tolerogenic DCs are able to suppress the development of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis （EAE）, a T cell-driven mouse model of human multiple sclerosis. In addition, several studies have proposed that nitric oxide （NO） plays a major role in the dif- ferentiation of regulatory T cells （Tregs） and the suppression of Thl/Th17 cells.2＂3 However, little is known about the role of DC-derived NO in the modulation of inflammatory auto- immune responses. Thus, we aimed to evaluate whether NO plays a role in the tolerogenic activity of CQ-treated DCs （CQ- DCs）. We found that CQ induces DC production of NO and expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase （IDO）, as well as inducible nitric oxide syrtthase （iNOS）.

Operational modal analysis is a non-destructive structural investigation that considers only the loads resulting from service *** approach allows the measurement of vibrations on a given structure with no need to interrupt its *** present work aims to develop a numerical model to represent the global structural behavior of a vessel breasting dolphin using a technique that is simple and cheap in order to obtain a fast answer about the stiffness of a pier after the collision of ships with capacity up to 400,000 *** determine the modes of vibration,one accelerometer was installed on the breasting dolphin located on the pier and a frequency domain technic was conducted over recorded data to obtain modal parameters of the *** situ measurements were compared to data from a finite element model based on the original structural design in order to adapt the model to accurately represent the actual behavior of the *** allowed a reliable structural analysis that accounted for existing structural damage and *** results of the experiment presented herein are the numerical characterization of the structure,along with the structural analysis to assess the degree of damage currently observed on the *** is noted that the dolphin subjected to ship impacts presents a reduction in stiffness of approximately10%and its global damage level can be monitored from now after new accidents.

Structural Optimization of a Composite Plate Subjected to a Small Mass Impact

This paper presents the optimization of a composite plate subjected to a small mass impact under a mode II delamination constraint, considering impact response and delamination threshold load predicted by closed form solutions. These solutions are inexpensive from a computational point of view and have good agreement with experimental data. Therefore, this approach can be very interesting when working with optimization methods that require a large number of iterations to converge. On other hand, the closed form solutions have implicit limitations. An example is the plate and impactor masses ratio that must be within a defined range, otherwise the impact model does not apply. Consequently, the plate optimization problem must be well stated and constrained in order to provide results comprised in the closed form solutions validity. In this work, the optimization problem and solution are stated and discussed. The optimization method employed is the simulated annealing, together with appropriate optimization heuristics. Final optimization results are validated by finite element analysis with the capability of predicting damage by mixed-mode delamination in composites under impact. The results obtained using the proposed optimization procedures agree remarkably well with the finite element predictions.

Meckel's diverticulum(MD) is estimated to affect 1%-2% of the general population, and it represents a clinically silent finding of a congenital anomaly in up to 85% of the cases. In adults, MD may cause symptoms, such as overt occult lower gastrointestinal bleeding. The diagnostic imaging workup includes computed tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging enterography, technetium 99 m scintigraphy(99mTc) using either labeled red blood cells or pertechnetate(known as the Meckel's scan) and angiography. The preoperative detection rate of MD in adults is low, and many patients ultimately undergo exploratory laparoscopy. More recently, however, endoscopic identification of MD has been possible with the use of balloon-assisted enteroscopy via direct luminal access, which also provides visualization of the diverticular ostium. The aim of this study was to review the diagnosis by double-balloon enteroscopy of 4 adults with symptomatic MD but who had negative diagnostic imaging workups. These cases indicate that balloonassisted enteroscopy is a valuable diagnostic method and should be considered in adult patients who have suspected MD and indefinite findings on diagnostic imaging workup, including negative Meckel's scan.
