Preparation and Characterization of Hydroxyapatite-Coated Selenium Nanoparticles and their Interaction with Osteosarcoma(SaOS-2) Cells

Nanotechnology has taken a firm step to revolutionize the field of orthopedic implants. Current research on bone implants focuses to develop implants with multifaceted functions viz., osteoinduction, chemoprevention, antimicrobial action etc., especially for cancerous bone resection. The objective of the present study was to synthesize a novel composite for bone implants, possessing the above properties. Selenium was selected owing to its chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic properties. Hydroxyapatite was selected owing to its bioactivity and similarity in composition to bone mineral properties. Selenium nanoparticles were prepared by chemical reduction method and coated with ***-coated selenium nanoparticle（HASnp） was characterized physico-chemically using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscope, and energy-dispersive X-ray *** was analysed in vitro using SaOS-2 cell line. Enhanced cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase activity were observed in HASnp-treated cells. The results indicate that HASnp is highly suitable for the use in orthopedic applications.

With improved outcomes associated with radiotherapy, radiation-induced sarcomas(RIS) are increasingly seen in long-term survivors of head and neck cancers, with an estimated risk of up to 0.3%. They exhibit no subsite predilection within the head and neck and can arise in any irradiated tissue of mesenchymal origin. Common histologic subtypes of RIS parallel their de novo counterparts and include osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma/sarcoma nitricoxide synthase, and fibrosarcoma. While imaging features of RIS are not pathognomonic, large size, extensive local invasion with bony destruction, marked enhancement within a prior radiotherapy field, and an appropriate latency period are suggestive of a diagnosis of RIS. RIS development may be influenced by factors such as radiation dose, age at initial exposure, exposure to chemotherapeutic agents and genetic tendency. Precise pathogenetic mechanisms of RIS are poorly understood and both directly mutagenizing effects of radiotherapy as well as changes in microenvironments are thought to play a role. Management of RIS is challenging, entailing surgery in irradiated tissue and a limited scope for further radiotherapy and chemotherapy. RIS is associated with significantly poorer outcomes than stagematched sarcomas that arise independent of irradiationand surgical resection with clear margins seems to offer the best chance for cure.

The corrosion behavior of water borne epoxy-ester primer coatings (10% - 50% PVCs) was evaluated through electrochemical techniques such as polarization and impedance spectroscopic (EIS) measurements. Studies were carried out for a longer duration of exposure extending up to 60 days in aqueous solution of NaCl (5%). Corrosion current (icorr), Corrosion potential (Ecorr), Coating resistance (Rc), Charge transfer resistance (Rct), Coating capacitance (Cc), Double layer capacitance (Cdl), break point frequency (fb), Water uptake (∮), diffusion coefficient (Dw) etc., indicated that 10% - 30% PVC coatings performed well in comparison to higher PVCs. Changes in the electrochemical characteristics were found to occur as a function of exposure time in all cases. The corrosion stability of the coatings were found to be greatly affected by the percentage of PVCs. Studies further indicated that when lower concentration of pigments were available, they remained completely surrounded by the binder;Thus leaving no space for the entry of corrosive agents. From these studies, it was concluded that the water borne paints could replace the conventional coatings, containing organic solvents. Therefore, water soluble epoxy-ester primers have to be employed in paints for developing eco- friendly coatings.

Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) is one of the most efficiently employed non-traditional machining processes for cutting hard-to-cut materials, to geometrically complex shapes that are difficult to machine by conventional machines. In the present work, an experimental investigation has been carried out to study the effect of pulsed current on material removal rate, electrode wear, surface roughness and diameteral overcut in corrosion resistant stainless steels viz., 316 L and 17-4 PH. The materials used for the work were machined with different electrode materials such as copper, copper-tungsten and graphite. It is observed that the output parameters such as material removal rate, electrode wear and surface roughness of EDM increase with increase in pulsed current. The results reveal that high material removal rate have been achieved with copper electrode whereas copper-tungsten yielded lower electrode wear, smooth surface finish and good dimensional accuracy.

AIM:To assess the predisposition for cardiovascular diseases among young Asian Indians by anthropometric data ***:One hundred and thirty males and 329 females aged between 15 and 26 years,attending health care check-ups at VIT University,were included in this *** body mass index,systolic and diastolic blood pressure,waist circumference,waist-to-hip ratio,pulse rate and pressure,along with mean arterial pressure,were measured and the data analyzed as per World Health Organization ***:Based on the analysis,54% of the male population was found to be predisposed to cardiovascular *** these,approximately 40% were at highest possible risk,with greater than threshold values of body mass index,waist circumference and waist-to-hip *** were found to have lower *** genders showed significant correlation(P < 0.0001) between body mass index and waist ***-to-hip ratio correlated significantly only in males with the former index whereas it correlated significantly with waist circumference in both *** operating curve analysis,when performed,showed optimal sensitivity and specificity for body mass index and waist ***:The above results indicate that seeds of cardiovascular disease may have been sown at a young age in Asian Indian *** measures are advised to prevent accelerated atherosclerosis leading to premature cardiovascular disease.

A soft-chemical method has been developed for the synthesis of nano-crystalline powders of silver decamolybdate. Gas sensing characteristics of this composition both in porous pellet and thin film configurations were investigated. The compound Ag6Mo10O33 was found to sense selectively ammonia at 503 K. Above 503 K it has significant cross sensitivity to petroleum gas (PG). Spin coated thin films exhibited selective sensing towards PG.
