Ranking academic institutions based on the productivity,impact,and quality of institutional scholars

Purpose:The quantitative rankings of over 55,000 institutions and their institutional programs are based on the individual rankings of approximately 30 million scholars determined by their productivity,impact,and ***/methodology/approach:The institutional ranking process developed here considers all institutions in all countries and regions,thereby including those that are established,as well as those that are emerging in scholarly *** of individual scholars worldwide are first generated using the recently introduced,fully indexed ScholarGPS *** rankings of individual scholars are extended here to determine the lifetime and last-five-year Top 20 rankings of academic institutions over all Fields of scholarly endeavor,in 14 individual Fields,in 177 Disciplines,and in approximately 350,000 unique *** associated with five specific Fields(Medicine,Engineering&Computer Science,life Sciences,Physical Sciences&Mathematics,and Social Sciences),and in two Disciplines(Chemistry,and Electrical&Computer Engineering)are presented as examples,and changes in the rankings over time are ***:For the Fields considered here,the Top 20 institutional rankings in Medicine have undergone the least change(lifetime versus last five years),while the rankings in Engineering&Computer Science have exhibited significant *** evolution of institutional rankings over time is largely attributed to the recent emergence of Chinese academic institutions,although this emergence is shown to be highly Field-and *** implementations:Existing rankings of academic institutions have:(i)often been restricted to pre-selected institutions,clouding the potential discovery of scholarly activity in emerging institutions and countries;(ii)considered only broad areas of research,limiting the ability of university leadership to act on the assessments in a concrete manner,or in contrast;(iii)have considered only a narrow are

Various machine-learning models,including deep neural network models,have already been developed to predict deleteriousness of missense(non-synonymous)*** improvements to the current state of the art,however,may still benefit from a fresh look at the biological problem using more sophisticated self-adaptive machine-learning *** advances in the field of natural language processing show that transformer models—a type of deep neural network—to be particularly powerful at modeling sequence information with context *** this study,we introduce MutFormer,a transformer-based model for the prediction of deleterious missense mutations,which uses reference and mutated protein sequences from the human genome as the primary *** takes advantage of a combination of self-attention layers and convolutional layers to learn both long-range and short-range dependencies between amino acid mutations in a protein *** first pre-trained MutFormer on reference protein sequences and mutated protein sequences resulting from common genetic variants observed in human *** next examined different fine-tuning methods to successfully apply the model to deleteriousness prediction of missense ***,we evaluated MutFormer’s performance on multiple testing datasets.

A New Control Approach of a Three-Phase Inverter Two levels

In this paper, we present the study, modelling and simulation of the duty cycle modulation (DCM) based on SVPWM control technique using Matlab/Simulink software. It is one of the most advanced control techniques of space vector modulation (SVM), which can be used for controlling static converters or for controlling electrical machines to achieve better dynamic performance. DCSVM is a control technique that generates control signals for the two-level voltage converter as well as for the intermediate times. The main advantage of this control technique is the reduction of the number of calculations, especially for the trigonometric functions and the generation of the reference voltage. In order to reduce the computational effort, we have designed a DCSVM controller that is able to faithfully reproduce the same vectors and output quantities as a classical SVM. In order to test the functionality and validity of the DCSVM control, we have developed different simulations that result in a total harmonic distortion (THD) of the voltage and current of 41.19% and 15.19% respectively with fundamental values of 61.51 V for the voltage and 2.80 A for the current;in contrast to the SVM which gives 47.27 V for the voltage and 2.01 A for the current with THDs of 77.16% for the voltage and 16.00% for the current. This results in an improvement in the distortion rate of around 25.5%. The results obtained are very satisfactory. The DCSVM is a real competitor to the SVM and its various variants.

Despite significant advancements in neuroprosthetic control strategies,current peripheral nerve interfacing techniques are limited in their ability to facilitate accurate and reliable long-term *** regenerative peripheral nerve interface(RPNI)is a biologically stable bioamplifier of efferent motor action potentials with demonstrated long-term *** innovative,straightforward,and reproducible surgical technique has shown enormous potential in improving prosthetic control for individuals with upper limb *** RPNI consists of an autologous free muscle graft secured around the end of a transected peripheral nerve or individual fascicles within a residual *** construct facilitates EMG signal transduction from the residual peripheral nerve to a neuroprosthetic device using indwelling bipolar electrodes on the muscle *** review article focuses on the development of the RPNI and its use for intuitive and enhanced prosthetic control and sensory *** addition,this article also highlights the use of RPNIs for the prevention and treatment of postamputation pain.

Chlorophylls and carotenoids are essential photosynthetic *** spatiotemporally coordinate the needs of chlorophylls and carotenoids for optimal photosynthesis and fitness in response to diverse environmental and developmental ***,how the biosynthesis pathways of these two pigments are coordinated,particularly at posttranslational level to allow rapid control,remains largely ***,we report that the highly conserved ORANGE(OR)family proteins coordinate both pathways via posttranslationally mediating the first committed enzyme in each *** demonstrate that OR family proteins physically interact with magnesium chelatase subunit I(CHlI)in chlorophyll biosynthesis pathway in addition to phytoene synthase(PSY)in carotenoid biosynthesis pathway and concurrently stabilize CHlI and PSY *** show that loss of OR genes hinders both chlorophyll and carotenoid biosynthesis,limits light-harvesting complex assembly,and impairs thylakoid grana stacking in *** of OR safeguards photosynthetic pigment biosynthesis and enhances thermotolerance in both Arabidopsis and tomato *** findings establish a novel mechanism by which plants coordinate chlorophyll and carotenoid biosynthesis and provide a potential genetic target to generate climate-resilient crops.

Partial Unlock for COVID-19-like Epidemics Can Save 1 - 3 Million lives Worldwide

Background: A large percentage of deaths in an epidemic or pandemic can be due to overshoot of population (herd) immunity, either from the initial peak or from planned or unplanned exit from lockdown or social distancing conditions. Objectives: We study partial unlock or reopening interaction with seasonal effects in a managed epidemic to quantify overshoot effects on small and large unlock steps and discover robust strategies for reducing overshoot. Methods: We simulate partial unlock of social distancing for epidemics over a range of replication factor, immunity duration and seasonality factor for strategies targeting immunity thresholds using overshoot optimization. Results: Seasonality change must be taken into account as one of the steps in an easing sequence, and a two-step unlock, including seasonal effects, minimizes overshoot and deaths. It may cause undershoot, which causes rebounds and assists survival of the pathogen. Conclusions: Partial easing levels, even low levels for economic relief while waiting on a vaccine, have population immunity thresholds based on the reduced replication rates and may experience overshoot as well. We further find a two-step strategy remains highly sensitive to variations in case ratio, replication factor, seasonality and timing. We demonstrate a three or more step strategy is more robust, and conclude that the best possible approach minimizes deaths under a range of likely actual conditions which include public response.
