Modeling th. complex and long term swelling behavior of argillaceous rocks

th. swelling behavior of argillaceous rocks is a complex phenomenon and has been determined using a lot of indexes in th. literature. Determining th. required modeling indexes th.t need to be performed requires expensive tests and extensive time in different laboratories. In some of th. cases, it is too diffi- cult to find a relation between th. effective variables and swelling potential. th.s paper suggests a meth.d for modeling th. time dependent swelling pressure of argillaceous rocks. th. trend of short term swelling potential during th. first 3 days of th. swelling pressure testing is used for modeling th. long term swelling pressure of mudstone th.t is recorded during month.. th. artificial neural network (ANN) as a power tool is used for modeling th.s nonlinear and complex behavior. th.s meth.d enables predicting th. swelling potential of argillaceous rocks when th. required indexes and also correlation between th.m is unattainable. th.s meth.d facilitates th. model of all studied samples under a unique formulation.

Estimation of th. van Genuchten Soil Water Retention Properties from Soil Textural Data

th. van Genuchten (vG) function is often used to describe th. soil water retention curve (SWRC) of unsaturated soils and fractured rock. th. objective of th.s study was to develop a meth.d to determine th. vG model parameter m from th. fractal dimension. We compared two approaches previously proposed by van Genuchten and Lenhard et al. for estimating m from th. pore size distribution index of th. Brooks and Corey (BC) model. In both.approaches we used a relationship between th. pore size distribution index of th. BC model and th. fractal dimension of th. SWRC. A dataset containing 75 samples from th. UNSODA unsaturated soil hydraulic database was used to evaluate th. two approaches. th. statistical parameters showed th.t th. approach by Lenhard et al. provided better estimates of th. parameter m. Anoth.r dataset containing 72 samples from th. literature was used to validate Lenhard's approach in which th. SWRC fractal dimension was estimated from th. clay content. th. estimated SWRC of th. second dataset was compared with.th.se obtained with.th. Rosetta model using sand, silt, and clay contents. Root mean square error values of th. proposed fractal approach and Rosetta were 0.081 and 0.136, respectively, indicating th.t th. proposed fractal approach performed better th.n th. Rosetta model.

Development of Large-Scale Land Information System (LIS) by Using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Field Surveying

Cadastral maps are an important component of land administration in most countries. In virtually all developed countries, th. needs of computerized land and geographic information systems (LIS/GIS) has given urgent impetus to computerizing cadastral maps and creating digital cadastral data bases (DCDB). th.s process is creating many institutional, legal, technical and administrative problems. th.s desire to establish DCDBs is being given increased impetus due to a new range of enabling technologies such as satellite position fixing (GPS), improved spatial data collection techniques such as digital th.odolites and “soft copy” photogrammetry, as well as a vast range of new information and communications technological tools, th.s contributing to th. advancement and keeping up with.th. great countries. th.s paper presents th. problem of cadastral maps. th. hith.rto existing cadastre, consisting of paper maps and land registers, is now becoming insufficient. Its shortcomings force developments leading to its improvement. One of th. ways is th. creation of a Land Information System. A digital cadastral map is th. main component of th.s system. th. structure and information content of th. map is presented, its differences from analogue maps are shown, and th. process of map creation is described. A digital cadastral map can be th. basis for additional th.matic layers, successively converting it into a complex system for management of administrative units.

Review of Sodic Soil Reclamation with.a Snapshot of Current Research Activity

For centuries, reclamation of sodic soils has been an essential part of cropping practices in several parts of th. world. Parallel to increasing population, th. need for new cropland constantly re-evaluates land suitability concepts. th.refore, th. importance of sodic soils as potential croplands is increasing worldwide. Alth.ugh th.oretically farmers can choose from a wide variety of reclamation options, according to profitability, business plans, and human and financial resources, in practice, few reclamation meth.ds are applied at large scale. th.s article touches on th. early history, 20th.Century intensive research, and current trends of sodic soil reclamation. New approaches such as leaching, chemical amendments, addition of organic material, and biological and microbial improvements are discussed, and also brand-new approaches are reviewed. th. early history is reviewed using historical books, th. achievements of th. last hundred years using basic technical literature, mostly books, and th. current approaches of our time with.fresh publications, mostly papers and two very recent conferences published in English.

Information schema constructs for defining warehouse databases of genotypes and phenotypes of system manifestation features

Our long-term objective is to develop a software toolbox for pre-embodiment design of complex and heterogeneous systems, such as cyber-physical systems. th. novelty of th.s toolbox is th.t it uses system manifestation features(SMFs) for transdisciplinary modeling of th.se systems. th. main challenges of implementation of th. toolbox are functional design- and language-independent computational realization of th. warehouses, and systematic development and management of th. various evolving implements of SMFs(genotypes, phenotypes, and instances). th.refore, an information schema construct(ISC) based approach is proposed to create th. schemata of th. associated warehouse databases and th. above-mentioned SMF implements. ISCs logically arrange th. data contents of SMFs in a set of relational tables of varying semantics. In th.s article we present th. ISCs necessary for creation of genotypes and phenotypes. th.y increase th. efficiency of th. database development process and make th. data relationships transparent. Our follow-up research focuses on th. elaboration of th. SMF instances based system modeling meth.dology.

In th.s paper we propose a meth.d to construct probability measures on th. space of convex bodies. For th.s purpose, first, we introduce th. notion of th.nness of a body. th.n we show th. existence of a measure with.th. property th.t its pushforward by th. th.nness function is a probability measure of truncated normal distribution. Finally, we improve th.s meth.d to find a measure satisfying some important properties in geometric measure th.ory.
