Photothermal therapy of tumors in lymph nodes using gold nanorods and near-infrared laser light with controlled surface cooling

Photothermal therapy （PTT） using near-infrared （NIR） laser light and gold nanorods （GNRs） shows promise as a novel cancer treatment modality. However, the laser intensity required to destroy tumor cells located beneath the skin is greater than the threshold intensity that causes skin damage; thus, irradiation with laser light damages the skin as well as the tumor. Here, we show that a temperature control system allows metastatic lymph nodes （LNs） to be treated by PTT using NIR laser light and GNRs, without skin damage. A mouse model of LN metastasis was developed by injection of tumor cells, and the tumor-bearing proper axillary LN was treated with NIR laser light after injection of GNRs. The skin temperature was maintained at 45 ~C during irradiation by using a temperature control system. Bioluminescence imaging revealed that tumor progression was less in LNs exposed to NIR laser light and GNRs than in LNs exposed to NIR laser light alone or controls （no irradiation or GNRs）. Furthermore, the skin and LN capsule were macroscopically intact on day 9 after irradiation with NIR laser light, whereas tumor cells within the LN showed apoptosis. A numerical analysis demonstrated that the high-temperature zone and the LN region showing damage were localized to an area up to 3 mm in depth. The proposed novel PTT technique, using NIR laser light and GNRs with controlled surface cooling, could be applied clinically to treat metastatic LNs located within or outside the area accessible for surgical dissection.

A Case of Warthin’s Tumor Together with IgG4-Related Sialadenitis

Warthin’s tumor is the second most frequent neoplasm next to pleomorphic adenoma in the salivary gland. The tumor contains the epithelial oncocyte cells with the presence of rich-mitochondria and their surrounding abundant lymphocytes. A relatively new disease entity of IgG4-related disease frequently occurs in the salivary gland. However, the coexistence of Warthin’s tumor and IgG4-related disease is scarcely observed. We have recently experienced a rare case of Warthin’s tumor with IgG4-related sialadenitis. A 51-year-old man presented to our hospital, complaining of a mass with right submandibular tenderness and spontaneous pain. A computed tomography scan of the cervical region revealed a suspicion of lymph node proliferative disease, including malignant lymphoma. Elevated serum levels of IL-2R: 1843 U/ml (reference value 122 - 496 U/ml), IgG: 3430 mg/dl (reference value 861 - 1747 mg/dl), and IgG4: 3140 mg/dl (reference value 11 - 121 mg/dl) were observed. Other laboratory data showed within normal ranges. The cervical tumor was diagnosed as Warthin’s tumor by the findings of fine-needle aspiration cytology and biopsy examination. Immunohistochemistry revealed numerous IgG4- and IgG-positive cells with fibrosis surrounding the epithelial component of Warthin’s tumor, suggesting IgG4-rerated sialadenitis. Finally, we diagnosed the cervical tumor as Warthin tumor with IgG4-related sialadenitis. This is the second report describing a case of Warthin’s tumor with possible involvement of IgG4-related sialadenitis.

Improvement in the information-oriented construction of temporary soil-retaining walls using sparse modeling

This fundamental study investigates how“super-resolution”technology based on sparse modeling,which has attracted attention in various fields,can be applied to the information-oriented construction of temporary soil-retaining *** machine learning process adopted here is based on the analytical results of numerical computations that involve many preliminary assumptions related to soilretaining walls,rather than the collection of images utilized in the image reconstruction ***,bases for vectors related to the displacement of retaining walls are generated using efficient inverse analysis and“super-resolution”processing from sparse amounts of physical observation *** purpose is to improve the properties of the inverse problem by artificial interpolation based on numerical *** has been shown that the inverse analysis related to the displacement of retaining walls can be performed efficiently and that highly accurate predictions can be achieved even with limited physical *** general,the inverse analysis of retaining walls is an ill-posed ***,if the number of apparent observations reconverted by“super-resolution”technology exceeds the number of unknown parameters,then the displacement distribution of a retaining wall can be estimated *** original idea is to break down the inverse problem into two separate problems by addressing the earth pressure distribution acting on the retaining *** makes it possible to identify the part to which the nonlinear inverse problem can be applied and to facilitate the efficient estimation and interpretation of the results.

Latest insights into the effects of Helicobacter pylori infection on gastric carcinogenesis

There appears to be the strong association between Helicobacter pylori （H pylori） and gastric cancer. We reviewed the latest evidences about the effects of H pylori infection on gastric carcinogenesis, classified into epidemiology, dynamics of gastric mucosal changes, DNA damages, virulence factors, host factors, and source of gastric malignancy. Through the considerable progress made in research into virulence factors resulting from differences between Hpylori strains, such as cagA positivity, as well as into host factors, such as gene polymorphisms, a diverse spectrum of H pyloriassociated diseases, including gastric cancer, is beginning to lend itself to elucidation. The impact of the novel hypothesis advanced by Houghton et al proposing bonemarrow derived stem cells （BMDC） as a potential source of gastric malignancy on evolving research remains to be seen with interest. Further progress in research into H pylori eradication as a viable prophylaxis of gastric cancer, as well as into the mechanisms of gastric carcinogenesis, is to be eagerly awaited for the current year and beyond.

A cellular model based on the Incrementally Modular Abstraction Hierarchy （IMAH） is a novel model that can represent the architecture of and changes in cyberworlds, preserving invariants from a general level to a specific one. We have developed a data processing system called the Cellular Data System （CDS）. In the development of business applications, you can prevent combinatorial explosion in the process of business design and testing by using CDS. In this paper, we have first designed and implemented wide-use algebra on the presentation level. Next, we have developed and verified the effectiveness of two general business applications using CDS： 1） a customer information management system, and 2） an estimate system.

Influence of the Karman Vortex Street on the Broadband Noise Generated from a Multiblade Fan

In the prediction theory for the broadband noise generated from a multiblade fan, the vortices in the Karman vortex street was divided into n pieces. The frequency distribution of the noise was estimated so that the Strouhal number could become constant even if the wake is spread by the diffusion. From the results of the measurement of the internal flow of the fan, it was found that the noise was related to the wake characteristics of the specific location in the scroll casing where the relative flow velocity was high. The noise operating in the vicinity of the maximum efficiency point of the fan was distributed over the domain from 500 Hz to 1250 Hz. It was experimentally proved that the influence of the Karman vortex street on the noise in the domains of high and low frequencies did not exist when the distribution of the estimated sound pressure level corresponded to the measured broadband noise.

Two components of delayed rectifier K~+ current in heart: molecular basis, functional diversity,and contribution to repolarization

Delayed rectifier K+ current (IK) is the major outward current responsible for ventricular repolarization. Two components of IK (IKr and IKs) have been identified in many mammalian species including humans. IKr plays a pivotal role in normal ventricular repolarization. A prolongation of action potential duration (APD) under a variety of conditions would favor the activation of IKs so that to prevent excessive repolarization delay causing early afterdepolarization. The pore-forming α subunits of IKr and IKs are composed of HERG (KCNH2) and KvLQT1 (KCNQ1), respectively. KvLQT1 is associated with a function-altering β subunit, minK to form IKs. HERG may be associated with minK (KCNE1) and/or minK-related protein (MiRP1) to form IKr, but the issue remains to be established. IKs is enhanced, whereas IKr is usually attenuated by β-adrenergic stimulation via cyclic adenosine 3’,5’- monophosphate (cAMP)/protein kinase A-dependent pathways. There exist regional differences in the density of IKr and IKs transmurally (endo-epicardial) and along the apico-basal axis, contributing to the spatial heterogeneity of ventricular repolarization. A decrease of IKr or IKs by mutations in either HERG, KvLQT1, or KCNE family results in inherited long QT syndrome (LQTS) with high risk for Torsades de pointes (TdP)-type polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. As to the pharmacological treatment and prevention of ventricular tachyarrhythmias, selectively block of IKs is expected to be more beneficial than selectively block of IKr in terms of homogeneous prolongation of refractoriness at high heart rates especially in diseased hearts including myocardial ischemia.

Effect of Doped Alkali Metal Ions on the SO_(2) Capture Performance of MnO_(2) Desulfurization Materials at Low Temperature

Sulfur dioxide(SO_(2))emissions from diesel exhaust pose a serious threat to the environment and human ***,desulfurization technology and the performance of desulfurization materials must be *** this study,MnO_(2) was modified with various alkali metal ions using the impregnation method to enhance its SO_(2) capture *** composites were characterized intensively by scanning electron microscopy,energydispersive X-ray spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction spectroscopy,and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller *** SO_(2) capture performance of these composites were measured via thermogravimetry,and the effect of doping with alkali metal ions on the SO_(2) capture performance of MnO_(2) was *** showed that the SO_(2) capture performance of MnO_(2) could be enhanced by doping with alkali metal ions,and the MnO_(2) composite doped with LiOH(2.0 mol/L)had the best SO_(2) capture capacity(124 mgSO_(2)/gMaterial),which was 18%higher than that of pure MnO_(2).Moreover,the type and concentration of alkali metal ions had varying effects on the SO_(2) capture performance of MnO_(2).In our experiment,the SO_(2) capture performance of the MnO_(2) doped with NaOH,LiCl,Na2CO3,K2CO3,and Li2CO3 composites were worse than that of pure MnO_(2).Therefore,the influences of the type and concentration of alkali metal ions to be doped into desulfurization materials must be considered comprehensively.
