Inhibition of α-glucosidase activity by N-deoxynojirimycin analogs in several insect phloem sap feeders

Secondary metabolites and synthetic iminosugars that structurally resemble monosaccharides are potent inhibitors of a-glucosidase activity. The enzyme is core in cleaving sucrose in phloem feeding insects and it also plays a crucial role of reducing osmotic stress via the formation of oligosaccharides. Inhibition of hydrolysis by iminosug- ars should result in nutritional deficiencies and/or disruption of normal osmoregulation. Deoxynojirimycin （DNJ） and 2 N-alkylated analogs [N-butyl DNJ （NB-DNJ） and N-nonyl DNJ （NN-DNJ）] were the major iminosugars used throughout the study. The extensive experiments conducted with a-glucosidase of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci indicated the competitive nature of inhibition and that the hydrophilic DNJ is a potent inhibitor in com- parison to the more hydrophobic NB-DNJ and NN-DNJ compounds. The same inhibitory pattern was observed with the psyllid Cacopsylla bidens a-glucosidase. In contrast to the above pattern, enzymes of the aphids, Myzus persicae and Aphis gossypii were more sen- sitive to the hydrophobic iminosugars as compared to DNJ. In vivo experiments in which adult B. tabaci were fed dietary iminosugars, show that the hydrophilic DNJ was far less toxic than the lipophilic NB-DNJ and NN-DNJ. It is proposed that this pattern is attributed to the better accessibility of the hydrophobic NN-DNJ to the a-glucosidase membrane- bound compartment in the midgut. Based on the inhibitory effects of certain polyhydroxy N-alkylated iminosugars, a-glucosidase of phloem feeding hemipterans could serve as an attractive target site for developing novel pest control agents.

Exploring Barriers and Opportunities in Adopting Crowdsourcing Based New Product Development in Manufacturing SMEs

Crowdsourcing is an innovative business practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content or even funds by soliciting contributions from a large group of people （the ＇Crowd＇）. The potential benefits of utilizing crowdsourcing in product design are well-documented, but little research exists on what are the barriers and opportunities in adopting crowdsourcing in new product development （NPD） of manufacturing SMEs. In order to answer the above questions, a Proof of Market study is carried out on crowdsourcing-based product design under an Innovate UK funded Smart project, which aims at identifying the needs, challenges and future development opportunities associated with adopting crowdsourcing strategies for NPD. The research findings from this study are reported here and can be used to guide future development of crowdsourcing-based collaborative design methods and tools and provide some practical references for industry to adopt this new and emerging collaborative design method in their business.

OPEN-LOOP FOG SIGNAL TESTING AND WAVELET ELIMINATING NOISE

An open-loop fiber optic gyro (FOG) testing system is designed. The noise characteristic of open-loop fiber optic gyro signals is analyzed. The wavelet eliminating noise method is discussed and compared with other methods, such as smoothing and low-pass filter methods. Results indicate that the wavelet eliminating noise method can satisfy the measuring demand of the FOG weak output signal with noise disturbing. The wavelet analysis method can efficiently eliminate the noise and reserve the information of the signal. The eliminating noise effect of using different wavelet base functions is compared. The effectiveness of multiresolution wavelet analyses of eliminating noise is proved by experimental results.

Resonance properties from a coupled channel meson exchange model

In this talk, I present the results on the pole structure of pion-nucleon scattering in an analytic model based on meson exchange. The analytic properties of scattering amplitudes provide important information. Besides the cuts, the poles and zeros on the different Riemann sheets determine the global behavior of the amplitude on the physical axis. Pole positions and residues allow for a parameterization of resonances in a well-defined way, free of assumptions for the background and energy dependence of the resonance part. This is a necessary condition to relate resonance contributions in different reactions.

土地神在藏语中叫“萨达”(■),与“念”(■)、“鲁”(■)、“赞”(■)等是青藏高原本土的神灵。藏族文化传统中认为动土翻石、砍伐树木、污染水源、建房立柱等皆是触犯土地神的行为,会招来危害,因此在长期的生产实践中产生了各种禳解“土地神”危害的仪轨。民间祭司“莱坞”家藏的手抄经文《土地神广经》(■)为系统讲述土地神族系、分类、形象、功能、危害和禳解方法的仪式文本,其中列举的“土地神”种类庞杂、形象各异,掌管的领域非常宽广,从天地的形成、人类的繁衍、动物的生死、植物的生长,到瘟疫、地震、冰雹等。通过分析内容可知,其文本在形成过程中杂糅了当地文化、中原文化和印度文化,尤其是中原的五行占算是文本的核心内容。禳解土地神危害的仪式文本多托名为“孔子神变王”(■)所著,学者认为“孔子神变王”的原型是儒家先师孔子,佛苯都将五行占算和禳解术归入其名下,也从侧面表明了与中原文化的密切联系。文章从汉藏文化交流的视阈出发,分析和考证了藏族民间拥有深厚信仰基础的土地神文本中的中原文化因素,以此阐释汉藏文化间交往交流交融的密切关系。

Endostatin enhances antitumor effect of tumor antigen-pulsed dendritic cell therapy in mouse xenograft model of lung carcinoma

Objective： To investigate the antitumor effect of endostatin combined with tumor antigen-pulsed dendritic cell （DC）-T cell therapy on lung cancer. Methods： Transplanted Lewis lung cancer （LLC） models of C57BL/6 mice were established by subcutaneous injection of LLC cells in left extremity axillary. Tumor antigen-pulsed DC-T cells from spleen cells and bone of mice were cultured in vitro. Tumor-bearing mice were randomly divided into three groups, including DC- T＋endostatin group, DC-T group, and phosphate-buffered saline （PBS） control group. Microvessel density （MVD） of tumor tissue in tumor-bearing mice was determined by immunohistochemistry （IHC）. The expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α （HIF-1α） were determined by Western blotting and IHC staining. The proportions of CD8＋ T cells, mature dendritic cells （mDC）, tumor-associated macrophages [TAM （M1/M2）], and myeloid-derived suppressor cells （MDSC） in suspended cells of tumor tissue were determined by flow cytometry. The expressions of inter｜eukin （IL）-6, IL-10, IL-17, transforming growth factor-β（TGF-β） and interferon-γ （IFN-γ） in suspended cells of tumor tissue were detected by enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay （ELISA）. Results： DC-T cells combined with endostatin remarkably suppressed tumor growth. MVD of mice in DC- T＋endostatin group was significantly lower than that of the control group and DC-T monotherapy group. The expressions of VEGF, IL-6 and IL-17 in tumors were markedly decreased, but IFN-γ, and HIF-1α increased after treating with DC-T cells combined with endostatin, compared to control group and DC-T group. In the DC- T＋endostatin group, the proportions of MDSC and TAM （M2 type） were significantly decreased, mDC and TAM （Nil type） were up-regulated, and CD8＋ T cells were recruited to infiltrate tumors, in contrast to PBS control and DC-T monotherapy. DC-T cells combined with endostatin potently reduced the expressions of IL-6, IL-10, TGF-β and IL-1

Growth performance and hematology of Djallonké rams fed haulms of four varieties of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.)

The study was conducted to assess the chemical composition of the haulms of 4 dual-purpose groundnut(Arachis hypogaea L.) varieties and their effects on the growth and hematology of Djallonke rams. The groundnut varieties were ICGV 97049(Obolo), ICGX SM 87057(Yenyawoso), RMP 12(Azivivi) and Manipinta. Rams(live weight 15.0 ± 3.0 kg) were randomly assigned to 4 sole groundnut haulm meal(GHM) treatments, with 4 rams each in an individual pen per treatment(total n = 16 rams). Samples of the groundnut haulms were milled and analyzed for crude protein(CP), neutral detergent fiber(NDF)and acid detergent fiber(ADF). The CP concentration was higher(P 0.05) when the Djallonke rams were fed the haulms. However, significant differences were observed in final live weight and average daily live weight gain. Rams fed the Yenyawoso variety had higher(P < 0.05) final live weight and average daily live weight gain compared with those fed Obolo and Azivivi varieties. Consumption of any of the 4 varieties of groundnut haulms by Djallonke rams did not have any harmful effect on their red and white blood cell numbers and hemoglobin *** study revealed that the different varieties of groundnut haulms differ in nutrient composition and also affect the growth performance of the rams. The Yenyawoso variety may be used as a sole diet for fattening Djallonke rams.
