We introduce a Bayesian genetic algorithm for reconstructing atomic models of monotype crystalline nanoparticles from a single projection using Z-contrast *** number of atoms in a projected atomic column obtained from annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy images serves as an input for the initial three-dimensional *** algorithm minimizes the energy of the structure while utilizing a priori information about the finite precision of the atom-counting results and neighbor-mass *** results show promising prospects for obtaining reliable reconstructions of beam-sensitive nanoparticles during dynamical processes from images acquired with sufficiently low incident electron doses.

Vaccination is the main prophylactic measure to reduce the mortality caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in healthy subjects since the immune response to hepatitis B recombinant vaccination occurs in over 90% of general population. Individuals who develop an anti-HBs titer less than 10 mIU/mL after primary vaccination cycle are defined “no responders”. Many factors could cause a non response to the HBV vaccination, such as administration of the vaccine in buttocks, impaired vaccine storage conditions, drug abuse, smoking, infections and obesity. Moreover there are some diseases, like chronic kidney disease, human immunodeficiency virus infection, chronic liver disease, celiac disease, thalassaemia, type I diabetes mellitus, down’s syndrome and other forms of mental retardation that are characterized by a poorer response to HBV vaccination than healthy subjects. To date it is still unclear how to treat this group of patients at high risk of hepatitis B infection. Recent studies seem to indicate that the administration of HBV recombinant vaccine by the intradermal route is very effective and could represent a more useful strategy than intramuscular route. This review focuses on the use of anti hepatitis B vaccine by intradermal route as alternative to conventional intramuscular vaccine in all non responder patients. A comprehensive review of the literature using PubMed database, with appropriate terms, was undertaken for articles in English published since 1983. The literature search was undertaken in september 2013.

The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of alexidine（ALX）,alone and combined with N-acetylcysteine（NAC）,in eradicating two Enterococcus faecalis strain *** biofilms of *** ATCC 29212 and the clinical isolate *** D1 were grown in the MBEC-high-throughput device for 24 h and were exposed to five twofold dilutions of ALX（2%–0.007 8%）alone and combined with100 mg？mL21NAC,for 1 and 5 *** was defined as 100%kill of biofilm *** student’s t-test was used to compare the efficacy of the associations of the two *** 1-min contact time,ALX eradicated the biofilms at all concentrations except for 0.007 8%and 0.015 6%–0.007 8%with *** ATCC 29212 and *** D1,*** results for eradication and concentration were obtained when it was combined with 100 mg？*** 5 min of contact time,ALX alone and combined with NAC eradicated all enterococci *** showed antimicrobial properties against the two *** strain biofilms tested at very low concentrations,and its combined use with NAC was not seen to enhance its activity.

Although it is generally understood that the testes recruited kidney ducts for reproductive function during the evolution of vertebrates, little is understood of the biological significance of the adaptation. In the context of the evolution of the mammalian epididymis, this report provides evidence that a major role of the epididymis is to enhance a male＇s chance of achieving paternity in a competitive mating system. A unique example of sperm cooperation in monotremes is used as evidence that the epididymis produces sperm competition proteins to form groups of 100 sperm into bundles that have a forward motility nearly thrice that of individual spermatozoa. As it required 3-h incubation in vitro under capacitation conditions to release motile sperm from the bundles, it is suggested that the monotremes provide an example of capacitation that is quite different from capacitation in higher mammals. It is suggested that variation between species in the intensity of sperm competition could explain the variation that occurs between species in the amount of post-testicular sperm maturation and storage in the epididymis, an explanation of why the human epididymis does not play as important a role in reproduction as the epididymis of most mammals. （Asian J Androl 2007 July; 9： 493-499）

Biomechanical comparison of distal locking screws for distal tibia fracture intramedullary nailing

Background: Newer generation intramedullary (IM) tibial nails provide several distal interlocking screw options. The objectives were to determine: 1) if the new oblique interlocking option provides superior stability, 2) which screw orientation/ configuration is the most biomechanically stable, and 3) if three distal interlocking screws provide better stability. Methods: A preliminary experiment was performed in torsion, compression, and bending tests with four different screw configurations: (I) one medial-to-lateral and one oblique, (II) two me-dial-to-lateral, (III) one medial-to-lateral and one anterior-to-posterior, and (IV) one medial-to-lateral, one anterior-to-posterior and one oblique in simu-lated distal metaphyseal fracture tibiae. Twenty- four synthes EXPERT tibial IM nails were used for six specimens of each screw configuration. Parts I and II, tibial IM nails were locked with 5.0 mm in-terlocking screws into simulated distal tibiae (PVC and composite analogue tibia). Part III, the two most stable configurations were tested using five pairs of simulated cadaveric distal tibiae metaphy-seal fractures. Results: significant differences were attributable to distal screw orientation for intrame- dullary nailing of distal tibia fractures. Configura-tions II and IV were found to be more stable than the other two configurations. No significant differ-ence was detected in construct stability in all modes of testing between Configurations II and IV. Dis-cussion: Configuration I did not provide superior stability for the distal tibia fracture fixation. Con-figurations II and IV provided equivalent stability. When choosing IM fixation for treatment of distal tibia metaphyseal fractures two medial-to-lateral screws provide the necessary stability for satisfac-tory fixation. Clinical Relevance: This study indi-cated an option for operative treatment of distal metaphyseal tibia fracture fixation where preserva-tion of soft tissue and rigid stabilization are needed.

The reproductive potential of overwintering boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis （Boheman）, females collected from pheromone traps in september, November and January, fed for 1, 3, and 5 weeks on plant pollens, and then provided cotton squares, was determined in the laboratory at 27 ~ I^C, 65% RH, and a photoperiod 13 ： 11 （L ： D） h. Duration of pollen feeding by overwintering boll weevils did not significantly influence egg and feeding punctures, or puncture ratios （egg to total punctures） for any of the three months of parent weevil collections when provided cotton squares on a daily basis. However, punctures and puncture ratios are significantly different when comparing mean data between months of boll weevil collections. When boll weevils were provided with cotton squares daily, the pre-ovipositional periods of female parents captured in september, November and January were 5, 9 and 14 days, respectively. The rate of eggs by females was significantly lower during November and January than september. Female parents collected in september produced a significantly higher percentage of eggs yielding adult progeny than those collected in November and January. Life table parameters indicated that net reproductive rate （Ro） of boll weevil females collected in september was 1.2- fold higher than those collected in November and 10.7-fold higher than those collected in January. Except for testes size, no differences in male reproductive parameters were observed during the cotton-free period compared with males captured during mid-cotton （June）. The number of oocytes in the ovarioles and the number of ooeytes containing yolk were significantly lower during september, November and January compared with June. The reproductive potential ofoverwintering boll weevil females collected in different months is an important consideration in determining the success of any control strategy.

Projecting Health Outcomes for Portuguese Ageing Population: Challenges and Opportunities

Objectives: To project health outcomes for the period 2011-2031, in the Portuguese population aged 65 years and over, considering the expected changes in its demographic and educational structure. Methods: Demographic projections were produced using the multistate cohort component method. Logistic regression models were fitted to estimate current differences in health outcomes, using data from the Portuguese Health survey. such differences were applied to the projection results, in order to project the prevalence of “poor” self-reported health status, functional limitations and disability. Results: Our results point to a future improvement in the considered health outcomes. The prevalence of “poor” self-reported health status, functional limitations and disability will decrease in both genders, but will continue to be higher among women than men. Discussion: Beyond age and gender, other determinants of health, like education, should be considered when studying the possible evolution of health outcomes in an ageing population.

Response of nitrogen fractions in the rhizosphere and bulk soil to organic mulching in an urban forest plantation

Nitrogen is an essential component in forest ecosystem nutrient *** fractions,such as dissolved nitrogen,ammonium,nitrate,and microbial biomass nitrogen,are sensitive indicators of soil nitrogen pools which affect soil fertility and nutrient ***,the responses of nitrogen fractions in forest soils to organic mulching are less well *** rhizosphere is an important micro-region that must be considered to better understand element cycling between plants and the soil.A field investigation was carried out on the effect of mulching soil in a 15-year-old Ligustrum lucidum urban *** in total nitrogen and nitrogen fractions in rhizosphere and bulk soil in the topsoil(upper 20 cm)and in the subsoil(20-40 cm)were evaluated following different levels of mulching,in addition to nitrogen contents in fine roots,leaves,and organic *** relationships between nitrogen fractions and other measured variables were *** mulching had no significant effect on most nitrogen fractions except for the rhizosphere microbial biomass nitrogen(MBN),and the thinnest(5 cm)mulching layer showed greater effects than other *** MBN was more sensitive to mulching compared to bulk soil,and was more affected by soil environmental *** and soil depth had more pronounced effects on nitrogen fractions than *** nitrogen and dissolved nitrogen were correlated to soil phosphorus,whereas other nitrogen fractions were strongly affected by soil physical properties(temperature,water content,bulk density).Mulching also decreased leaf nitrogen content,which was more related to soil nitrogen fractions(except for MBN)than nitrogen contents in either fine roots or organic *** applications of small quantities of organic mulch contribute to nitrogen transformation and utilization in urban forests.

The combustion reactivity of rice husk from New south Wales, Australia was measured by heating cubical baskets in controlled environment and monitoring the centre temperature. Frank-Kamenetskii's ignition theory was used to calculate the activation energy. Results agreed well with tests on other cellulosic materials, Numerical simulations of temperature changes were carried out, using a special technique to deal with non-linearities in the heat conduction equation. The numerical results indicate that the time factor should be taken into account when evaluating self-combustion risks.
