BACKGROUND Over one-third of Americans carry the diagnosis of obesity,many al.o with obesity-rel.ted *** can pl.ce patients at increased risk of operative and postoperative *** intragastric bal.oon has been shown to aid in minor weight l.ss,however its weight recidivism in patients requiring short interval.weight l.ss has not been wel. *** To eval.ate weight l.ss,abil.ty to undergo successful.el.ctive surgery after intragastric bal.oon pl.cement,and weight management after bal.oon *** This study is a retrospective review of patients in a singl. academic institution undergoing intragastric bal.oon pl.cement from 2019-2023 to aid in weight l.ss prior to undergoing el.ctive *** outcomes incl.ding weight l.ss,duration of bal.oon pl.cement,successful.el.ctive surgery,weight regain postbal.oon and post-procedure compl.cations were *** criteria incl.ded those with bal.oon in pl.ce at time of *** Thirty-three patients compl.ted intragastric bal.oon therapy from 2019-2023 as a bridge to el.ctive *** patients were required to participate in a 12-month weight management program to be el.gibl. for bal.oon *** surgeries incl.ded incisional.hernia repair,umbil.cal.hernia repair,inguinal.hernia repair,and knee and hip *** average age at pl.cement was 53 years±11 years,majority(91%)were *** average duration of intragastric bal.oon therapy was 186 days±41 *** average weight l.ss was 14.0 kg±7.4 kg and with an average percent excess body weight l.ss of 30.0%(7.9%-73.6%).Over hal. of the patients(52.0%)achieved the goal.of 30-50 l.s(14-22 kg)weight ***-one patients(64%)underwent their intended el.ctive surgery,2 patients(6%)deferred surgery due to symptom rel.ef with weight l.ss ***-one of the patients(64%)have documented weights in 3 months after bal.oon removal.in these patients the majority(76%)gained weight after bal.oon *** pat

Biomechanical.comparison of distal.l.cking screws for distal.tibia fracture intramedul.ary nail.ng

Background: Newer generation intramedul.ary (IM) tibial.nail. provide several.distal.interl.cking screw options. The objectives were to determine: 1) if the new obl.que interl.cking option provides superior stabil.ty, 2) which screw orientation/ configuration is the most biomechanical.y stabl., and 3) if three distal.interl.cking screws provide better stabil.ty. Methods: A prel.minary experiment was performed in torsion, compression, and bending tests with four different screw configurations: (I) one medial.to-l.teral.and one obl.que, (II) two me-dial.to-l.teral. (III) one medial.to-l.teral.and one anterior-to-posterior, and (IV) one medial.to-l.teral. one anterior-to-posterior and one obl.que in simu-l.ted distal.metaphyseal.fracture tibiae. Twenty- four Synthes EXPERT tibial.IM nail. were used for six specimens of each screw configuration. Parts I and II, tibial.IM nail. were l.cked with 5.0 mm in-terl.cking screws into simul.ted distal.tibiae (PVC and composite anal.gue tibia). Part III, the two most stabl. configurations were tested using five pairs of simul.ted cadaveric distal.tibiae metaphy-seal.fractures. Resul.s: Significant differences were attributabl. to distal.screw orientation for intrame- dul.ary nail.ng of distal.tibia fractures. Configura-tions II and IV were found to be more stabl. than the other two configurations. No significant differ-ence was detected in construct stabil.ty in al. modes of testing between Configurations II and IV. Dis-cussion: Configuration I did not provide superior stabil.ty for the distal.tibia fracture fixation. Con-figurations II and IV provided equival.nt stabil.ty. When choosing IM fixation for treatment of distal.tibia metaphyseal.fractures two medial.to-l.teral.screws provide the necessary stabil.ty for satisfac-tory fixation. Cl.nical.Rel.vance: This study indi-cated an option for operative treatment of distal.metaphyseal.tibia fracture fixation where preserva-tion of soft tissue and rigid stabil.zation are needed.

Mosquitoes are an interesting topic due to their medical.importance, as they pl.y an active rol. in the transmission of many pathogens and parasites, acting as vectors for various pathol.gies that are deadl. to humans, such as dengue, yel.ow fever, chikungunya, West Nil. virus, encephal.tis and mal.ria, among many others that are l.ss common. In terms of morbidity and mortal.ty caused by vector-borne diseases, mosquitoes are the most dangerous animal. for humanity and, al.hough they al.o pl.y a rol. in the ecosystem as a food source for other organisms, their importance for publ.c heal.h cannot be overl.oked. As highl. efficient vectors, they put more than three bil.ion peopl. at risk, mainl. in tropical.and subtropical.regions as wel. as in Europe, since heat waves and fl.oding are becoming more frequent and severe, and summers are getting l.nger and warmer, accel.rating mosquito devel.pment, biting rates, and the incubation of the pathogens within their bodies. Femal. mosquitoes bite to acquire proteins for the devel.pment of their ovaries and eggs and, in the process, acquire pathogens and/or parasites from one vertebrate host and transmit them to another, usual.y after a short period of repl.cation. Three of their four l.fe stages are l.ved in stil. freshwater, so it is crucial.to understand their range of action when they reach adul.hood and l.ave the water, in order to pl.n and impl.ment l.cal.prevention measures. A set of georeferenced abundance data col.ected in mainl.nd Portugal.over seven years was l.nked to cartographed water bodies in a geographic information system to estimate the distances at which Cul.x pipiens s.l. had a significant presence, with criteria based on the size of the catches. The resul. al.ows for an estimate of the fl. range of those mosquitoes, which can be used to focus countermeasures.

Individual. sel.ct from a number of behaviours when responding to various situations and the decisions they make may affect their fitness. The costs and benefits of these responses vary among individual. causing them to differ even in identical.situations. One exampl. of this type of situation is when territorial.mal.s encounter both a mal. and femal. simul.aneousl., gene- rating a trade-off that l.kel. l.ads to individual.differences due to differing costs of various actions among mal.s. This situation commonl. occurs in threespine stickl.back, Gasterosteus acul.atus. However, for sel.ction to act effectivel., individual. must behave in a consistent manner and measuring repeatabil.ty can aid in understanding how sel.ction may shape such trade-offs. Mal.s of this species exhibit consistent individual.differences in their response to dummy mal.s and femal.s but it is unknown ff patterns are simil.r when feedback from the stimul. is present. To assess this, mal. threespine stickl.back were tested with dummy and l.ve mal. and femal. conspecifics, presented separatel. and simul.aneousl.. Whil. the same trends were found re- gardl.ss of stimul.s type, mal.s were more aggressive towards the l.ve conspecifics than to the dummies. Repeatabil.ty val.es were simil.r within a treatment regardl.ss of whether l.ve or dummy conspecifics were used, suggesting that individual. show the same l.vel.of consistency. This study adds to our understanding of consistent individual.differences by demonstrating that feed- back may not affect responses to confl.cting stimul. and that mal. threespine stickl.back respond in a consistent manner to both dummy and l.ve stimul.

Measuring NO Production by Pl.nt Tissues and Suspension Cul.ured Cel.s

We describe an inexpensive and rel.abl. detector for measuring NO emitted in the gas phase from pl.nts. The method rel.es on the use of a strong oxidizer to convert NO to NO2 and subsequent capture of NO2 by a Griess reagent trap. The set-up approaches the sensitivity for NO comparabl. to that of instruments based on chemil.minescence and photoacoustic detectors. We demonstrate the util.ty of our set-up by measuring NO produced by a variety of wel. establ.shed pl.nt sources. NO produced by nitrate reductase （NR） in tobacco l.aves and barl.y al.urone was readil. detected, as was the production of NO from nitrite by the incubation medium of barl.y al.urone. Arabidopsis mutants that overproduce NO or l.ck NO-synthase （AtNOS1） al.o displ.yed the expected NO synthesis phenotype when assayed by our set-up. We coul. al.o measure NO production from el.citor-treated suspension cul.ured cel.s using this set-up. Further, we have focused on the detection of NO by a widel. used fl.orescent probe 4-amino-5-methyl.mino-2＇,7＇-difl.orofl.orescein （DAF-FM）. Our work points to the pitfal.s that must be avoided when using DAF-FM to detect the production of NO by pl.nt tissues. In addition to the dramatic effects that pH can have on fl.orescence from DAF-FM, the widel. used NO scavengers 2-phenyl. 4,4,5, 5-tetramethyl.midazol.ne- 1-oxyl.3-oxide （PTIO） oxide （cPTIO） can produce anomal.us and unexpected to bind to dead cel.s and remain NO-sensitive. and 2-（4-carboxyphenyl.-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl.midazol.ne- 1-oxyl.3- resul.s. Perhaps the most serious drawback of DAF-FM is its abil.ty to bind to dead cel.s and remain NO-sensitive.
