Adhesion of P-type and type-1 fimbriated uropathogenic ***(UPEC)to uroepithelial cells initiates urinary tract infections(UTIs).This research aimed to evaluate the capacities of selected cranberry polyphenols and their microbial metabolites to inhibit such adhesion in vitro using a modified fluorometric *** showed that the inhibition capacity of myricetin increased with concentration and plateaued at 70%.It had IC50 values of 13.2μM against P-type *** and 5.50μM against type-1 *** showed similar anti-adhesion capacities to *** A2 and B2 had weaker anti-adhesion activities than myricetin and quercetin,with maximal inhibition capacities of 20%-30%against *** acid,a major metabolite of cranberry polyphenols in human urine,showed a maximal inhibition of 20%at 558μM against type-1 *** adhesion,whereas no anti-adhesion activity against P-type *** was *** fractions of cranberry fruit powder enriched with proanthocyanidin polymers showed the highest anti-adhesion activities compared to the fractions enriched with anthocyanins,flavonols,or proanthocyanidin ***,the anti-adhesion activities of cranberry polyphenols and metabolites depend on their structures and the types of fimbriae on ***.

Bioactive signals play many important roles on cell function and *** most biological studies,soluble biochemical cues such as growth factors or cytokines are added directly into the media to maintain and/or manipulate cell activities in ***,these methods cannot accurately mimic certain in vivo biological signaling motifs,which are often immobilized to extracellular matrix and also display spatial gradients that are critical for tissue *** biochemical cues,biophysical properties such as substrate stiffness can influence cell behavior but is not easy to manipulate under conventional cell culturing *** development in photocrosslinkable hydrogels provides new tools that allow precise control of spatial biochemical and biophysical cues for biological applications,but doing so requires a comprehensive study on various hydrogel photochemistry kinetics to allow thorough photocrosslink reaction while maintain protein bioactivities at the same *** this paper,we studied several photochemistry reactions and evaluate key photochemical parameters,such as photoinitiators and ultra-violet(UV)exposure times,to understand their unique contributions to undesired protein damage and cell *** data illustrates the retention of protein function and minimize of cell health during photoreactions requires careful selection of photoinitiator type and concentration,and UV exposure *** also developed a robust method based on thiol-norbornene chemistry for independent control of hydrogel stiffness and spatial bioactive ***,we highlight a class of bioactive hydrogels to stiffness control and site specific immobilized bioactive proteins/peptides for the study of cellular behavior such as cellular attraction,repulsion and stem cell fate.

Decomposing the drivers of residential space cooling energy consumption in EU-28 countries using a panel data approach

While space cooling currently represents less than 1%of final energy use in the residential sector of the Euro-pean Union(EU-28),it was the fastest growing end-use during the 2000-15 period with a mean annual growth rate of 6%per ***,little is known about factors which have driven regional air-conditioning(AC)energy consumption over time,since the literature is limited to cross-sectional studies that lack differentiation between climatic and non-climatic *** projections for the EU’s electricity sector may therefore neglect the potential implications of rapidly growing AC *** develop a novel decomposition framework,which breaks down residential space cooling energy consumption in EU-28 countries into the effect of different components from 2000 to *** is extended to panel data models identifying specific drivers of space cooling’s climate-sensitive ***,we explore scenarios of residential AC energy consumption up to 2050 and evaluate their impact on summer time peak *** diffusion was found to be the key driver of space cooling energy consumption,but this effect was partly counterbalanced by efficiency *** weather influences AC equipment ownership rate in EU-28 households,personal income has a larger marginal *** baseline scenarios,AC diffusion saturates by 2050,while modestly increasing sectoral final energy ***,our range of scenario values for space cooling energy consumption in 2050 exceed the majority of those originat-ing from recently published *** a future renewables-driven electricity system,energy security risks may emerge from a scenario of fast AC up-take in new and renovated buildings,especially for colder European countries where modelled peak cooling electricity demand is shown to outgrow the projected expansion of solar *** findings have important implications for the EU’s strategy to decarbonise energy supply.

Understanding and manipulating the structural evolution of water oxidation electrocatalysts lays the foundation to finetune their catalytic ***,we present a synthesis of NiSe_(2)-Ce_(2)(CO_(3))_(2)O heterostructure and demonstrate the efficacy of interfacial Ce_(2)(CO_(3))2O in promoting the formation of catalytically active centers to improve oxygen evolution ***-situ Raman spectroscopy shows that incorporation of Ce_(2)(CO_(3))2O into NiSe_(2) causes a cathodic shift of the Ni^(2+)→Ni~(3+) transition *** electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that strong electronic coupling at heterogeneous interface accelerates charge transfer ***,density functional theory calculations suggest that actual catalytic active species of NiOOH transformed from NiSe_(2),which is coupled with Ce_(2)(CO_(3))_(2)O,can optimize electronic structure and decrease the free energy barriers toward fast oxygen evolution reaction(OER) ***,the resultant NiSe_(2)-Ce_(2)(CO_(3))_(2)O electrode exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic performance with low overpotentials(268/304 mV@50/100 mA cm^(-2)) and excellent stability(50 mA cm^(-2) for 120 h) in the alkaline *** work emphasizes the significance of modulating the dynamic changes in developing efficient electrocatalyst.

*** In july 2018,the Antarctic community came together to meet at the 13th Workshop on Antarctic Meteorology and Climate(WAMC)in Madison,Wisconsin,USA(Fig.1);and in the following year in june 2019,the 14th WAMC was held in Charleston,South Carolina,USA(Fig.2).With a growing history,the WAMC addresses the topics of Antarctic meteorology and climate(Kameda et al.,2008;Colwell et al.,2016;Lazzara et al.,2018)as well as weather-related issues of scientific and operational *** workshops bring together researchers,operational forecasters,numerical modelers,observational specialists,and *** themes of both workshops included Antarctic meteorological observations,Antarctic atmospheric numerical modeling,Antarctic meteorological and climate research,and Antarctic weather forecasting and operational *** 2018 and 2019 WAMC were both followed by a one-day focus on the Year of Polar Prediction-Southern Hemisphere(YOPP-SH),when preparations and follow-up discussions were made with regard to the YOPP Special Observing Period from 16 November 2018 to 15 February 2019.

The branched-chain amino acid transaminases （BCATs） have a crucial role in metabolism of the branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These enzymes catalyze the last step of synthesis and the initial step of degradation of these amino acids. Although the biosynthetic pathways of branched chain amino acids in plants have been extensively investigated and a number of genes have been characterized, their catabolism in plants is not yet completely understood. We previously characterized the branched chain amino acid transaminase gene family in tomato, revealing both the subcellular localization and kinetic properties of the enzymes encoded by six genes. Here, we examined possible functions of the enzymes during fruit development. We further characterized transgenic plants differing in the expression of branched chain amino acid transaminases I and 3, evaluating the rates of respiration in fruits deficient in BCAT1 and the levels of volatiles in lines overexpressing either BCAT1 or BCAT3. We quantitatively tested, via precursor and isotope feeding experiments, the importance of the branched chain amino acids and their corresponding keto acids in the formation of fruit volatiles. Our results not only demonstrate for the first time the importance of branched chain amino acids in fruit respiration, but also reveal that keto acids, rather than amino acids, are the likely precursors for the branched chain flavor volatiles.

Spatial management of fishing effort can be used to avoid catching undesirable size classes for target species,and improve yield-per-recruit for the exploited *** closure management has been proposed as a means to more effectively utilise spatial management,however these management provisions often lack quantitative evaluation which constrains the information available to inform *** demonstrate the use of a spatially and size structured population dynamics model to evaluate the potential impact of spatial management on a multijurisdictional fishery for a highly migratory species(eastern king prawn,Penaeus[Melicertus]plebejus).Under current conditions in the fishery,the overall effect of closures on harvest was estimated to be comparatively minor,regardless of assumptions about how effort or fisher behavior are affected by spatial *** assumptions about the movement patterns of eastern king prawn had little influence on the impact of closures on overall ***,when effort was increased to historic levels similar to those observed when the closures were implemented,a much greater impact on overall harvest was *** approach taken and simulation outcomes are discussed in the context of spatial management for both eastern king prawn,and penaeid fisheries more broadly.
