Volume Change of the Random Coil to Folded Conformational Transition of <i>Thermomyces</i><i>lanuginosus</i>Xylanase at 24&#176C and pH = 7.0 via Application of the Clausius-Clapeyron Equation

A partial phase diagram characterizing the conformational change that occurs in Thermomyces lanuginosus xylanase as it is slowly heated in 150 mM sodium phosphate (pH = 7.0) has been con-structed from slow-scan-rate differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The Clausius-Clapeyron equation was applied to determine an associated volume change of -205 l·mol-1 at 24°C, the equilibrium transition temperature at 1.0 atm pressure. This value is in excellent agreement with that predicted using a previously published [1] empirical equation for calculating the hydro-dynamic radius if the transition is regarded as from a random coil to a functional, folded state and with the assumption that the hydrodynamic radius is a good approximation of the true random coil radius. The existence of a low-temperature random coil is confirmed by circular dichroism and dynamic light scattering measurements. Thus, at 24°C and 1.0 atm pressure the enzyme appears to fold from a random coil to a functional, folded form as it is slowly heated.

Decoupling the Electrical and Entropic Contributions to Energy Transfer from Infrared Radiation to a Power Generator

The interaction between infrared radiation and a power generator device in time is studied as a route to harvest infrared, and possibly other electromagnetic radiations. Broadening the spectrum of the usable electromagnetic spectrum would greatly contribute to the renewable and sustainable energy sources available to humankind. In particular, low frequency and low power radiation is important for applications on ships, satellites, cars, personal backpacks, and, more generally, where non-dangerous energy is needed at all hours of the day, independent of weather conditions. In this work, we identify an electric and an entropic contribution to the energy transfer from low power infrared radiation to the power generator device, representing electrical and thermal contributions to the power generation. The electric contribution prevails, and is important because it offers multiple ways to increase the voltage produced. For example, placing black-colored gaffer tape on the illuminated face doubles the voltage produced, while the temperature difference, thus the entropic contribution, is not sensitive to the presence of the tape. We recognize the electric contribution through the fast changes it imparts to the voltage output of the power generator device, which mirror the instabilities in time of the infrared radiation. The device thus acts as sensor of the infrared radiation’s behavior in time. On the other hand, we distinguish the entropic contribution through the slow changes it causes to the voltage output of the power generator device, which reflect the relative delay with which the two faces of the device respond to thermal perturbations.

Epidemiological Profile of Chronic Kidney Disease at the General Hospital of National Reference of N’Djamena (Chad)

Introduction: Chronic renal failure is a disease that affects many patients worldwide and increasingly in Africa. At the end of 2003, about 1.1 million people were suffering from End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and were treated with periodic dialysis [12]. In Africa, CKF represents 2% to 10% of hospital admissions and is responsible for 4% to 22% of deaths [14]. So, this study is conducted for the first time in Chad, with the aims to determine the prevalence of CKD. Methods: This was a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study over a period of 12 months from April 29, 2011 to April 28, 2012. All patients with chronic renal failure regardless of etiology and stage of chronic kidney disease were included in the study. Chronic renal failure was defined as a glomerular filtration rate below 60 ml/min/1.73m (MDRD) for more than 3 months. This study was conducted in several departments of the National General Reference Hospital (NGRH) of N’Djamena. Result: Among 2039 inpatients, 195 patients had chronic renal failure, as a frequency of 9.6%. The average age of our patients was 51 ± 16.8 years, ranging from 11 to 85 years. Male predominance was noted to be 59% of men against 41% of women. We noted that high blood pressure accounted for 66.2% (N = 129) of cases, diabetes in 48.2% (N = 94), alcoholism in 28.7% (N = 56), smoking in 14.9% (N = 29) and the association alcoholism-smoking in 19.5% (N = 38). Hypertension was the leading cause of chronic renal failure (66.2%). All patients had a serum creatinine and creatinine clearance was assessed. Among them, we noted 57 patients (29%) with end-stage renal failure. The average calcium and phosphate serum were 1.8 mmol/l and 1.6 mmol/l, respectively. We noted that 120 patients as 61.5%, currently took herbal medicine. 48 out of 57 of our patients with ESRD as 24.6% of patients in the study had received replacement therapy (hemodialysis) with 12.5% of deaths. 背景与目的脂肪获取和处理技术的差异可能会影响脂肪移植的成功率。本研究利用裸鼠模型，对比不同处理方法获取的脂肪移植物的性质，并评估移植脂肪组织中存活组织的体积。方法第一阶段，通过负压吸引辅助脂肪抽吸或超声辅助脂肪抽吸2种方式获取脂肪，并利用2种孔隙尺寸的筛网进行过滤。对移植材料的如下方面进行分析：平均团块大小，油脂、脂肪和水溶性成分的构成比，以及基质血管细胞群（stromalvascularfraction，SVF）的产量。将过滤物及滤液注入无胸腺的裸鼠皮下。第二阶段，将仅通过负压吸引吸脂术中获取脂肪抽吸物，进行离心、纱布摇匀或过滤处理，然后利用相似的规范进行研究。结果与负压吸引脂肪抽吸术相比，超声辅助的脂肪抽吸术获取的脂肪在SVF含量和脂肪移植体内研究成活量情况均相似。通过超声辅助的脂肪抽吸术仅比负压脂肪抽吸术产生稍微多的油脂；通过500μm或800μm孔径的滤网进行过滤均可有效去除液体和油脂。利用纱布法处理的脂肪，其体内移植成活率和SVF产量均最高。对所有移植物的组织学分析均显示为完整的脂肪组织。结论通过超声辅助及负压吸引行脂肪抽吸术获取的脂肪，其在异种移植模型中具有相似的成活率。对于少量填充移植而要求最佳成活率的身体敏感区域而言，利用纱布摇匀的处理方式可能是用于美容性脂肪移植的最佳方法。过滤法和离心法均可有效去除液体成分，其处理过的脂肪具有相似的移植成活率，当所需移植体积较大时，这2种方法均可行。

Use of Prosopis laevigata Seed Gum and Opuntia ficus-indica Mucilage for the Treatment of Municipal Wastewaters by Coagulation-Flocculation

Prosopis laevigata and Opuntia ficus-indica grow in arid and semiarid regions of Mexico and other countries. Both produce biopolymers with interesting characteristics from the rheological point of view as well as because of their coagulating-flocculating capabilities. Prosopis produce galactomannans inside the endosperm, very similar to those found in guar, locust bean, and tara gums. Opuntia sp. produces mucilage that contains polygalacturonic acid and five neutral sugars. Prosopis seed gum has not been proposed to be used as coagulant-flocculant before. In the case of Opuntia mucilage, some authors have suggested its use in the treatment of waters, using either the mucilage or the whole cladode powder. The use of these products in the treatment of municipal or even industrial wastewaters could give rise to diverse benefits. From the environmental point of view, treated waters with neither Fe nor Al, nor synthetic polymers would be obtained (with less toxicity risk). Besides, the produced sludges would be smaller in amount, with better biodegradability, and lower metals content. From the economical point of view, the use of these biopolymers would give an added value to the Opuntia and Prosopis culture in Mexico, helping small communities to enhance their incomes by producing environmental-friendly products. This work shows that both Prosopis galactomannan and Opuntia mucilage can be used to treat municipal wastewaters with an initial organic charge of about 827 mg/l as COD by the coagulation-flocculation process, with COD removals for the mesquite seed gum of up to 90% (pH 10, dose of 75 mg/l) and of 60% (pH 7, doses of 50 and 150 mg/l). In the case of mucilage, 65% of the initial COD was removed at pH 10 (dose of 50 mg/l). These figures are very promising for the treatment of wastewaters, with environmental-friendly products.
