Naval cohorts rely heavily on personnel to ensure the efficient running of naval organisations. As such, the wellbeing of personnel is essential. In an occupational setting, naval service personnel experience a variety of physiological and psychological stressors. Most naval services arrange annual physical fitness and body composition tests to ensure the physical readiness of personnel. However, these tests only evaluate a small amount of physiological capabilities. Components such as aerobic and strength capabilities are assessed, however, other components of physical fitness such as speed, agility, anaerobic capacity and flexibility are not. In addition to the physical capabilities, personnel are impacted by fatigue, nutrition and psychological stressors such as copping in stressful situations or dealing with time away from family and friends. This review will discuss the physiological and psychological factors that affect personnel's wellbeing. In addition to this, it will also evaluate the methods that are used to assess both physiological and psychological wellbeing.

While total internal reflection(TIR)lays the foundation for many important applications,foremost fibre optics that revolutionised information technologies,it is undesirable in some other applications such as light-emitting diodes(LEDs),which are a backbone for energy-efficient light *** the case of LEDs,TIR prevents photons from escaping the constituent high-index *** in material science have led to good efficiencies in generating photons from electron–hole pairs,making light extraction the bottleneck of the overall efficiency of *** recent years,the extraction efficiency has been improved,using nanostructures at the semiconductor/air interface that outcouple trapped photons to the outside ***,the design of geometrical features for light extraction with sizes comparable to or smaller than the optical wavelength always requires sophisticated and timeconsuming fabrication,which causes a gap between lab demonstration and industrial-level *** by lightning bugs,we propose and realise a disordered metasurface for light extraction throughout the visible spectrum,achieved with single-step *** applying such a cost-effective light extraction layer,we improve the external quantum efficiency by a factor of 1.65 for commercialised GaN LEDs,demonstrating a substantial potential for global energy-saving and sustainability.

AIM To assess nutritional recovery,particularly regarding feeding jejunostomy tube(FJT)utilization,following upper gastrointestinal resection for malignancy. METHODS A retrospective review was performed of a prospectively-maintained database of adult patients who underwent esophagectomy or gastrectomy(subtotal or total)for cancer with curative intent,from January 2001 to June 2014. Patient demographics,the approach to esophagectomy,the extent of gastrectomy,FJT placement and utilization at discharge,administration of parenteral nutrition(PN),and complications were evaluated. All patients were followed for at least ninety days or until *** The 287 patients underwent upper GI resection,comprised of 182 esophagectomy(n=107 transhiatal,58.7%; n=56 Ivor-Lewis,30.7%)and 105 gastrectomy [n=63 subtotal(SG),60.0%; n=42 total(TG),40.0%]. 181 of 182 esophagectomy patients underwent FJT,compared with 47 of 105 gastrectomy patients(99.5% vs 44.8%,P < 0.0001),of whom most had undergone TG(n=39,92.9% vs n=8 SG,12.9%,P < 0.0001). Median length of stay was similar between esophagectomy and gastrectomy groups(14.7 d vs 17.1 d,P=0.076). Upon discharge,87 esophagectomy patients(48.1%)were taking enteral feeds,with 53(29.3%)fully and 34(18.8%)partially dependent. Meanwhile,20 of 39 TG patients(51.3%)were either fully(n=3,7.7%)or partially(n=17,43.6%)dependent on tube feeds,compared with 5 of 8 SG patients(10.6%),all of whom were partially dependent. Gastrectomy patients were significantly less likely to be fully dependent on tube feeds at discharge compared to esophagectomy patients(6.4% vs 29.3%,P=0.0006). PN was administered despite FJT placement more often following gastrectomy than esophagectomy(n=11,23.4% vs n=7,3.9%,P=0.0001). FJT-specific complications requiring reoperation within 30 d of resection occurred more commonly in the gastrectomy group(n=6),all after TG,compared to 1 esophagectomy patient(12.8% vs 0.6%,P=0.0003). The Rosoideae is a subfamily of the Rosaceae that contains a number of species of economic importance,including the soft fruit species strawberry(Fragaria 3ananassa),red(Rubus idaeus)and black(Rubus occidentalis)raspberries,blackberries(Rubus spp.)and one of the most economically important cut flower genera,the roses(Rosa spp.).Molecular genetics and genomics resources for the Rosoideae have developed rapidly over the past two decades,beginning with the development and application of a number of molecular marker types including restriction fragment length polymorphisms,amplified fragment length polymorphisms and microsatellites,and culminating in the recent publication of the genome sequence of the woodland strawberry,Fragaria vesca,and the development of high throughput single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)-genotyping resources for Fragaria,Rosa and *** tools have been used to identify genes and other functional elements that control traits of economic importance,to study the evolution of plant genome structure within the subfamily,and are beginning to facilitate genomic-assisted breeding through the development and deployment of markers linked to traits such as aspects of fruit quality,disease resistance and the timing of *** this review,we report on the developments that have been made over the last 20 years in the field of molecular genetics and structural genomics within the Rosoideae,comment on how the knowledge gained will improve the efficiency of cultivar development and discuss how these advances will enhance our understanding of the biological processes determining agronomically important traits in all Rosoideae species.

Strawberries are rich in polyphenols which impart health benefits when metabolized by the gut microbiome,including anti-inflammatory,neuroprotective,and antiproliferative *** addition,polyphenolic anthocyanins contribute to the attractive color of strawberry ***,the genetic basis of polyphenol biosynthesis has not been extensively studied in *** this investigation,ripe fruits from three cultivated strawberry populations were characterized for polyphenol content using HPLC-DAD-MSn and genotyped using the iStraw35k *** and QTL analyses identified genetic loci controlling polyphenol *** were identified on four chromosomes for pelargonidin-3-O-malonylglucoside,pelargonidin-3-O-acetylglucoside,cinnamoyl glucose,and ellagic acid deoxyhexoside ***/absence of ellagic acid deoxyhexoside and pelargonidin-3-O-malonylglucoside was found to be under the control of major gene loci on LG1X2 and LG6b,respectively,on the F.×ananassa linkage *** of gene predictions in the *** reference genome sequence identified a single candidate gene for ellagic acid deoxyhexoside biosynthesis,while seven malonyltransferase genes were identified as candidates for pelargonidin-3-O-malonylglucoside *** malonyltransferase genes were identified in the F.×ananassa‘Camarosa’genome sequence but the candidate for ellagic acid deoxyhexoside biosynthesis was absent from the‘Camarosa’*** study demonstrated that polyphenol biosynthesis in strawberry is,in some cases,under simple genetic control,supporting previous observations of the presence or absence of these compounds in strawberry *** has also shed light on the mechanisms controlling polyphenol biosynthesis and enhanced the knowledge of these biosynthesis pathways in *** above findings will facilitate breeding for strawberries enriched in compounds with beneficial health effects.

Flowering time is an important trait that affects survival,reproduction and yield in both wild and cultivated ***,many studies have focused on the identification of flowering time quantitative trait locus(QTLs)in different crops,and molecular control of this trait has been extensively investigated in model *** we report the mapping of QTLs for flowering time and vegetative traits in a large woodland strawberry mapping population that was phenotyped both under field conditions and in a greenhouse after flower induction in the *** greenhouse experiment revealed additive QTLs in three linkage groups(LG),two on both LG4 and LG7,and one on LG6 that explain about half of the flowering time variance in the *** of the QTLs were newly identified in this study,and one co-localized with the previously characterized FvTFL1 *** additional strong QTL corresponding to previously mapped PFRU was detected in both field and greenhouse experiments indicating that gene(s)in this locus can control the timing of flowering in different environments in addition to the duration of flowering and axillary bud differentiation to runners and branch *** putative flowering time genes were identified in these QTL regions that await functional *** results indicate that a few major QTLs may control flowering time and axillary bud differentiation in *** suggest that the identification of causal genes in the diploid strawberry may enable fine tuning of flowering time and vegetative growth in the closely related octoploid cultivated strawberry.
