A fully coherent free electron laser(FEL) seeded with a higher-order harmonic(hh) pulse from high-order harmonic generation(hhG) is successfully operated for a sufficiently prolonged time in pilot user experiments by using a timing drift feedback. For hhG-seeded FELs, the seeding laser pulses have to be synchronized with electron bunches. Despite seeded FELs being non-chaotic light sources in principle, external laser-seeded FELs are often unstable in practice because of a timing jitter and a drift between the seeding laser pulses and the accelerated electron bunches. Accordingly,we constructed a relative arrival-timing monitor based on non-invasive electro-optic sampling(EOS). the EOS monitor made uninterrupted shot-to-shot monitoring possible even during the seeded FEL operation. the EOS system was then used for arrival-timing feedback with an adjustability of 100 fs for continual operation of the hhG-seeded FEL. Using the EOS-based beam drift controlling system, the hhG-seeded FEL was operated over half a day with an effective hit rate of 20%–30%. the output pulse energy was 20 μJ at the 61.2 nm wavelength. towards seeded FELs in the water window region, we investigated our upgrade plan to seed high-power FELs with hh photon energy of 30–100 e V and lase at shorter wavelengths of up to 2 nm through high-gain harmonic generation(hGhG) at the energy-upgraded SPring-8Compact SASE Source(SCSS) accelerator. We studied a benefit as well as the feasibility of the next hhG-seeded FEL machine with single-stage hGhG with tunability of a lasing wavelength.

Reviewed are the present status and future prospects of the laser fusionresearch at the ILE Osaka. the Gekko XII and Peta Watt laser system have been operated forinvestigating the implosion hydrodynamics, fast ignition, and the relativistic laser plasmainteractions and so on. In particular, the fast ignition experiments with cone shell target havebeen in progress as the UK and US-Japan collaboration programs. In the experiments, the implodedhigh density plasmas are heated by irradiating 500 J level peta-watt laser pulse. the thermalneutron yield is found to increase by three orders of magnitude by injecting the peta-watt laserinto the cone shell target. the Rayleigh-taylor instability experiment results are also reviewed isthis paper.

An ensemble-based assimilation system that used the MASINGAR ink-2 （Model of Aerosol Species IN the Global AtmospheRe Mark 2） dust forecasting model and satellite-derived aerosol optical thickness （AOt） data. processed in the JAXA （Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency） Satellite Monitoring for Environmental Studies （JASMES） system with MODIS （Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer） observations. was used to quantify the impact of assimilation on forecasts of a severe Asian dust storm during May 10-13. 2011. the modeled bidirectional reflectance function and observed vegetation index employed in JASMES enable AOt retrievals in areas of high surface reflectance, making JASMES effective for dust forecasting and early warning by enabling assimilations in dust storm source regions. Forecasts both with and without assimilation were validated using PM^0 observations from China, Korea, and Japan in the tEMM WG1 dataset. Only the forecast with assimilation successfully captured the contrast between the core and tail of the dust storm by increasing the AOt around the core by 70-150% and decreasing it around the tail by 20-30% in the 18-h forecast. the forecast with assimilation improved the agreement with observed PMlo concentrations, but the effect was limited at downwind sites in Korea and Japan because of the lack of observational constraints for a mis-forecasted dust storm due to cloud.

Let f : S(E) → S(B) be a surjective isometry between the unit spheres of two weakly compact JB*-triples not containing direct summands of rank less than or equal to 3. Suppose E has rank greater than or equal to 5. Applying techniques developed in JB*-triple theory, we prove that f admits an extension to a surjective real linear isometry t : E → B. Among the consequences, we show that every surjective isometry between the unit spheres of two compact C*-algebras A and B, without assuming any restriction on the rank of their direct summands(and in particular when A = K(h) and B = K(h′)), extends to a surjective real linear isometry from A into B. these results provide new examples of infinite-dimensional Banach spaces where tingley's problem admits a positive answer.
