Adenoma incidence decreases u nder the efect of polypectomy

MM： To investigate whether, under the influence of pol ypectomy, the incidence of adenoma decreases with age.METHODS： Consecutive patients with colonic adenomas identified at index.colonoscopy were retrospectively selected if they had undergone three or more complete colonoscopies, at least 24 mo apart. Patients who had any first-degree relative with colorectal cancer were ex.luded. Data regarding number of adenomas at each colonoscopy, their location, size and histological classification were recorded. The monthly incidence density of adenomas after the index.ex.mination was estimated for the study population, by using the person-years method. Baseline adenomas were ex.luded from incidence calculations but their characteristics were correlated with recurrence at follow-up, using the x.42 test.RESULTS： One hundred and fifty-six.patients were included （109 male, mean age at index.colonoscopy 56.8 ± 10.3 years）, with follow-up that ranged from 48 to 232 mo. No significant correlations were observed between the number, the presence of villous component, or the size of adenomas at index.colonoscopy and the presence of adenomas at subsequent colonoscopies （P = 0.49, 0.12 and 0.78, respectively）. The incidence of colonic adenomas was observed to decay from 1.4% person-months at the beginning of the study to values close to 0%, at 12 years after index.colonoscopy.CONCLUSION： Our results suggest the sporadic formation of adenomas occurs within a discrete period and that, when these adenomas are removed, all neoplasia-prone clones may be ex.inguished.

Carbon-13 Solid State NMR Techniques to Evaluate the Morphology of PP/TiO₂ Composites

Solid state NMR was successfully used to determine the proton spin-lattice relax.tion time in the rotating frame (T1ρH) for systems based on polypropylene (PP) and PP with titanium diox.de (TiO2) organically modified or unmodified incorporated, in order to understand the molecular behavior of these systems. These techniques were employed in the samples organically modified and unmodified TiO2 to investigate the effect of organic modification on the dispersion and distribution of the particles in the PP matrix. The results were analyzed in terms of the effect of the particles organic modified or not according to the intermolecular interaction in the composites. According to the T1ρH values, all composites showed at least two domains: the short values were related to the rigid part, which included the crystalline and amorphous phase constricted in it, while the longer times were attributed to the amorphous region, which had higher molecular mobility compared to the rigid region of the materials. The increase in the relax.tion time parameter in the composites compared to the pure PP was associated to the strong interaction between titanium diox.de particles and the polymer chains. This effect was more pronounced for the systems containing organically modified TiO2. According to the results, it could be inferred that intermolecular interaction occurred in the CH2 and CH groups, being more intense with CH2 groups. Finally, the solid state NMR techniques were able to evaluate the molecular dynamics of those systems.

The formation of calcium phosphate phases is ex.remely important in a biomedical engineering contex.. These phosphates are used in many applications, such as grafts, drug-delivery processes and evaluation of the bioactivity of metallic surfaces. Considering this scenario, it is useful to evaluate the thermodynamic conditions for the precipitation of phosphates of biomedical interest, mainly hydrox.apatite. In this work, we investigate the effects of two important factors using a thermodynamic framework: 1) carbon diox.de partial pressure;and 2) buffer type (2-Amino-2-hydrox.- methyl-propane-1,3-diol, known as TRIS and 2-[4-(2-hydrox.ethyl)piperazin-1-yl] ethanesulfonic acid, also called HEPES), on the driving force behind the precipitation of calcium phosphates in simulated body fluids. The in silico results show that the pH value is governed by carbon diox.de content, as ex.ected to occur in vivo. Moreover, the buffers can deplete the free calcium available in solution and, consequently, can cause difficulties in the calcium phosphate precipitation.

Actinic Cheilitis: Clinical Characteristics Observed in 75 Patients and a Summary of the Literature of This Often Neglected Premalignant Disorder

Actinic cheilitis can progress to squamous cell carcinoma in 20% of cases. The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical characteristics of 75 patients with actinic cheilitis and to summarise the current literature concerning actinic cheilitis. A total of 75 patients were evaluated over a 3-year period. The medical history, physical ex.mination results and images were collected from each patient. Demographic data were collected and analysed. To review the literature, the relevant data were collected from scientific journals in the last 30 years. The mean age of the patients was 56 years old;42 patients (56%) were female, and 66 patients (88%) were white. Nineteen (25.3%) patients reported at least one symptom, including pain, burning and itching. Six.y-five (86.7%) patients presented actinic cheilitis only in the lower lip. All of the patients reported sun ex.osure, and 44 (58.6%) patients were ex.osed for more than 10 years. The main clinical aspects investigated and analysed included dryness (100%), flaking (72%) and white lesions (57.3%). Lip assessment is ex.remely important in medical and dental care. From the 15 lesions assessed in the presence of actinic cheilitis, the most common clinical characteristics observed were dryness, flaking and white lesions. It is imperative to know the clinical aspects that may be encountered in actinic cheilitis in order to achieve early diagnosis, thus avoiding lip squamous cell carcinoma transformation.

Development and implementation of an automated system to aid laboratory diagnosis using image processing

The objective of this work is to provide an automatic system to count white blood cells in a blood smear. To do so an ex.eriment was assembled, composed by a standard microscope with two step motors coupled to its knobs in order to move the microscope in x.and y directions and a web cam which was mounted in the top of the microscope responsible for to acquire images from the smear. The step motors and the web cam are controlled by a microcomputer PC standard via software developed inDelphi. The motors use the parallel port to communicate with the PC and the camera use the USB port. The main idea is to set an initial point into the smear and the automated system will carry over the smear acquiring images (frames with 640 × 480 pix.ls) and counting the white blood cells encountered. The double histogram threshold technique is implemented to initially ex.lude the red cells from the image leaving only the white ones. Preliminaries results are obtained and show that the system is quite fast and has a good capacity of selection, even when different kinds of smear are used.

Zika virus (ZIKV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, has been associated with benign infections for decades. However, it has become a public health concern due to its association with severe fetal and neurological complications. Although many efforts have been made to control ZIKV infection, approved vaccines or antiviral drugs are still lacking. Consequently, the development of new effective anti-ZIKV agents is urgently needed. In this contex., we investigated the antiviral potential of pyrazolone derivatives against ZIKV replication using in silico and in vitro methods. The four pyrazolone derivatives evaluated (1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d) inhibited over 50% of ZIKV replication with low cytotox.city. Among them, compound 1b ex.ibited the most potent activity (EC50 = 4.3 μM) and the highest selectivity (SI = 342). Mechanism of action studies indicated that these compounds act at early stages of virus replication, and compound 1b can also directly inactivate ZIKV particles. Molecular docking studies suggested that these compounds can bind to and block the activity of ZIKV NS5 methyltransferase. Finally, pharmacokinetic and tox.cological predictions have reinforced the safety and drug-like profiles of these derivatives. In conclusion, the pyrazolone scaffold proved to be valuable for anti-ZIKV drug development, and the derivatives studied deserve further investigation.

Tuberculosis and the taeniasis-cysticercosis complex. typical cases of zoonosis, have great importance for public health, since they cause economic liabilities to the Brazilian beef production chain. They are actually a synonym of technical inadequateness in Good Production Practices. Both diseases have ex.sted since ancient times and their occurrence should be controlled by basic sanitary measures. However, there is a significant neglect attitude by authorities of countries with high occurrence rates, or rather, tropical underdeveloped nations, to focus on public policies for the control and decrease of the prevalence and the occurrence of these diseases. Current review elucidates the epidemiological profile of the diseases and contributes towards the elucidation and establishment of measures ensuring control.

Multifunctional Nanostructured Materials Applied in Controlled Radiopharmaceuticals Release

The metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) radiopharmaceutical, an analogue of norepinephrine, has been used to diagnose certain diseases in the cardiovascular system when radiolabeled with 123I. This radiopharmaceutical can also be used to treat tumors, such as neuroblastomas and pheochromocytomas, when radiolabeled with 131I. Its clinical use is often accompanied by a slow intravenous administration, where a significant dose of radiation can directly affect workers in nuclear medicine services. To overcome this problem, the incorporation and controlled release of radiopharmaceuticals from the matrix.of mesoporous systems based on silica, such as SBA-15 and hybrid [SBA-15/P(N-iPAAm)], can lead to a significant reduction in radiation doses received by workers. In the present study, silica matrices SBA-15 and hybrid [SBA-15/P(N-iPAAm)] containing the radiopharmaceutical MIBG were prepared and physicochemically characterized through FTIR, SEM, and small angle x.ray diffraction techniques. The release profiles of MIBG from SBA-15 and [SBA-15/P(N-iPAAm)] were studied in a simulated body fluid (SBF) to evaluate their potential application as vehicles for controlled releases. Furthermore, in vitro studies were performed to assess the cytotox.city of matrices as compared to human lung fibroblast cells (MRC-5). The results revealed that the amount of MIBG incorporated within the studied matrices was indeed quite different, showing that only the hybrid [SBA-15/P(N-iPAAm)] system allowed for a more adequate release profile of MIGB. Taking all results into consideration, it can be concluded that the hybrid matrix.[SBA-15/P(N-iPAAm)] can be considered a potential alternative material for the controlled release delivery of radio-pharmaceuticals.

Breast Milk Micronutrients in Lactating Mothers from Ribeirao Preto(SP),Brazil

Breast milk is the ideal food for infants and should be consumed as the ex.lusive food for the first six.months and then be complemented up to two years of age. The aim of this study is to determine breast milk’s content of macro and micronutrient in lactating mothers from the Ribeir?o Preto (SP) region, in Brazil. A cross-sectional study was conducted with breast milk samples of 70 mothers from the city of Ribeir?o Preto (SP). The samples were analyzed in order to determine iron, copper, zinc, calcium and magnesium concentrations. They were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine of Ribeir?o Preto, University of S?o Paulo, and all subjects gave written informed consent to participate. The current study revealed that all 70 lactating mothers were healthy and delivered babies more than 38 weeks gestation;71.4% of them were younger than 30 years and 47.1% were primiparae. The iron, copper, zinc, calcium and magnesium concentrations detected in milk were 2.7 ± 0.4, 0.4 ± 0.02, 3.6 ± 0.2, 142 ± 21.6 and 39.8 ± 4.2 mg/L, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that in the present sample, ex.ept for calcium, all other mineral concentrations were adequate for the infant’s requirements according to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI).
