Non-canonical bone morphogenic protein (BMP) pathway signaling plays a critical role during embryonic neurogenesis, inducing apoptosis and eliminating an excess of neural progenitor cells, in preparation for the population of the neural stem cell niches. Our previous work discovered that non-canonical BMP signaling also induced the expression of the anti-apoptotic cytokine macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF). Because there are residual neural progenitors that escape BMP induced apoptosis, we believed the expression of MIF could be used to counter this specific type of developmental apoptosis. In vitro studies using P19 cells and ex vivo studies using E13 neural progenitor from wild type and mif-/-mice revealed that overexpression of mif was able to counteract BMP induced apoptosis, while in contrast ablation of mif resulted in a dramatic increase in apoptosis. Despite this finding, it is interesting to note that mif-/-mice, while presenting an overall increase in apoptosis are viable, ablation of mif expression in zebrafish and frog are embryonic lethal, suggesting a redundant or non-critical role of MIF in the developing mammalian embryo.

In this paper, interface engineering via sputtering of CdO nanolayer at the buffer-CdS/CdTe-absorber interface is demonstrated as an efficient approach to improve the performance of solar cell device. The i-CdO interfacial layer with various thicknesses from 5 nm to 35 nm was deposited by DC magnetron sputtering. Comparative studies on TCO/CdS/CdTe and TCO/CdS/CdO/CdTe interfaces have been conducted by current-voltage, capacitance-voltage and admittance spectroscopy measurements. The current-voltage characteristics of the devices with an area of 0.45 cm2 under 100 mW/cm2 illumination, at the optimum thickness of CdO intermediate layer in the proposed structures, show increases of the short circuit current density and the open circuit voltage by 5% and 25%, respectively. The efficiency improvement of 3.1% of p-i-n cell over p-n cell is observed. Results of the temperature-dependent current-voltage and admittance measurements revealed the removing of the deep level defect with the activation energy of 0.43 eV and the reducing of the ideality factor from 1.9 to 1.8 via buffer/absorber interfacial passivation method. Interface passivation appears to be critical to improve the short circuit current density and the open circuit voltage, and CdO thin film is clearly effective for this purpose.

Despite of the advantages of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) which makes our lives easier, faster, and more connected, the development of ICT is pushing the countries in the direction of ICT applications. The higher education is one of the sectors that try to adopt one of ICT applications through E-learning and using (Moodle) as learning management system. This paper finds out the impact of Moodle on students through examining the students’ acceptance of the system using TAM model. This study was carried out by some teaching members of the Faculty of King Abdullah II School for Information Technology at the University of Jordan during the spring semester of the academic year 2013/2014. The results of this study firm the original TAM’s findings and reveal that the faculties of students and number of previously E-learning courses have an influence on perceive ease of use and perceived usefulness while the level of the academic year and GPA have no significant influence on perceived ease of use. Even though, they have affected on perceived usefulness. Finally, the student’s skills on computer with student’s difficulty in reading from the screen affect perceived ease of use but, it has been found that they have no influence on perceived usefulness.

Achievable supercooling for the formation of methane hydrate from water emulsions was studied in seven different crude oils and in decane. The experiments were performed under constant rate cooling from + 20 to-15 °C and a pressure of methane of 12 MPa. It was demonstrated that the shapes and positions of the resulting survival curves depend on the density, viscosity and dispersive power of oil samples used in the experiments, as well as on the degree of oil oxidation. In addition, results of the experiments on ice freezing under the same emulsions are presented. The results obtained in the work allowed us to discuss the possibility and features of primary and secondary nucleation of the hydrate and ice in the systems under consideration.

Aim of this paper is to reveal whether the geomagnetic activity (GMA) and meteorological factors (MFs) affect vascular parameters of healthy volunteers. As a trial study we used new device “Tonocard,” and new vascular parameters for study—a pulse wave velocity (PWV) and an endothelial function (EnF) in addition to blood pressure measurements. These parameters never investigated before in such aspects. As far as novelty of device itself and investigated parameters we limited ourselves by monitoring only four healthy volunteers (without cardiovascular pathology). To analyze the sensitivity of their aforementioned medical indices to GMA and MFs two independent mathematical approaches were used, one of whom is based on traditional methods of mathematical statistics and the other on the theory of pattern recognition Dependence of physiological characteristics on the atmospheric temperature, revealed by both applied mathematical approaches, showed complex non-linear character of biological replies: the reaction has a different form in different temperature ranges and is manifested in the form of synchronization of slow variations of physiological and atmospheric parameters (trends) with a period of several days, while the daily variations were virtually independent. The systolic blood pressure (SBP), PWV and a difference between two specially selected values of PWV (DPWV) are approximately equally depending on atmospheric temperature, which accounts for an average of 26% to 28% of their variations. Sensitivity to the GMA for this test was found only for PWV.

Comparative Evaluation of Peptidases Produced by Penicillium corylophilum and Penicillium waksmanii in Solid State Fermentation Using Agro-industrial Residues

In this present work, the best conditions for production of peptidases under solid state fermentation by the fungi Penicillium corylophilum and Penicillium waksmanii, partial purification using Sephadex G-75 gel filtration column, as well as the biochemical characterization of the partial purified enzymes were investigated. P. corylophilum showed the best production in medium containing wheat bran, agro-industrial residue, without additives （egg albumin or casein）, in which peptidase activity reached 520 U mL^-1 and the enzyme displayed the optimum activity between pH range from 7 to 8 and 60 ℃. It also showed high stability in wide pH range and temperature until 45 ℃ for 60 min of incubation. On the other hand, P. waksmanii, the best production was noted in a medium containing wheat bran （95%） and casein （5%）, reaching 545 U mL^-1, with proteolytic optimum activity at pH 7.5 and 55 ℃. The enzyme was mainly stable in pH range from 8 to 9 and at temperatures until 45 ℃ for 60 rain of incubation. The peptidases secreted by both fungi were inhibited in the presence of phenylmethane sulfonyl fluoride, showing that they belong to the subclass of serine peptidases.

A continuously or/and discontinuously tunable LiNbO3 Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO) with the spectral range of 1.42 - 4.24 um and shifting of 0…12 nm is created and investigated. The OPO resonator ring circuit provides for the radiation energy output value of up to 50 mJ. Radiation bandwidth narrowing of up to 0.7 cm–1 by introducing of the Fabry-Perot etalon into the OPO resonator has been obtained.

Dear editor,Foreign body ingestion and food bolus impaction are frequent emergency cases in clinical practice.[1] The majority of foreign body ingestion cases occur in the pediatric population, while individuals with mental illness,neurodevelopmental disorders, alcohol intoxication, and prisoners are recognized as a high-risk adult population for foreign body ingestion.
