Aim:Blood lipid profiles changed following nonfocused ultrasound treatments for body *** present study elucidates clinical effects of these devices on adipose ***:Ultrasound treatments for 5 males and 5 females in a supine position,ages 37-67 years,were applied at 20 KHz and 3.0 W/cm2 in modulated *** abdomen was treated by an ultrasound handpiece for 30 min followed by a 6-min lymphatic *** circumferences at the level of the umbilicus and body weight were measured before and immediately after *** lipid profiles including total cholesterol,low-density lipoprotein,high-density lipoprotein,triglyceride(TG),nonesterified fatty acid(NEFA)and lipoprotein-a were measured at baseline,every 10 min during treatment,and 15,30,45,60,75,and 90 min after treatment ***:NEFA showed statistically higher values after 10 min following treatment *** values remained high despite some fluctuation,reaching a maximum at 90 *** contrast,TG gradually decreased in concentration until the last measurement,especially for the first 30 min,with statistically significant *** in other lipid profiles and lipoprotein-a were not ***:Changes in NEFA concentration were significant following ultrasound treatment,and suggest that metabolism of TGs stored within the adipocytes occurred immediately after treatment initiation.

The braking behavior of drivers when a pedestrian comes out from the sidewalk to the road was analyzed using a driving simulator. Based on drivers＇ braking behavior, the braking control timing of the system for avoiding the collision with pedestrians was proposed. In this study, the subject drivers started braking at almost the same time in terms of TTC （Time to Collision）, regardless of the velocity of a subject vehicle and crossing velocity of pedestrians. This experimental result showed that brake timing of the system which can minimize the interference for braking between drivers and the system is 1.3 s of TTC. Next, the drivers＇ braking behavior was investigated when the system controlled braking to avoid collision at this timing. As a result, drivers did not show any change of braking behavior with no excessive interference between braking control by the system and braking operation by drivers for avoiding collisions with pedestrians which is equivalent to the excessive dependence on the system.

Physiological changes in the photosynthesis, respiration and cell division of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a freshwater green alga, in response to adenine nucleotides were investigated. In advance of this investigation, two adenine nucleotides, di(2'-O-methyl)-cyclic bis(3'-5')diadenylic acid (1) and its N-benzoyl-protected analog 2 were synthesized from the commercially available adenosine phosphoramidite. The respective analogs significantly promoted the cell division (cell number) of C. reinhardtii strains 137c mt+ and BR mt+. Moreover, they significantly enhanced the O2 evolution (photosynthesis) and O2 uptake (respiration) of both strains. c-di-AMP analogs seem to play an effective role as a physiological activator in planta.

In biological controls using Bacillus spp., cyclic lipopeptides play a role as elicitors to induce disease resistance on various host plants. However, it is still unclear the specificity between cyclic lipopeptides and host plants to induce disease resistance. In this study, we aimed to clarify the specificity to induce disease resistance among cyclic lipopeptides on various host plants. Our data clearly showed both cyclic lipopeptides conferred disease suppression on most of host plants, but at different range of cyclic lipopeptide concentration. Our findings contribute to understanding the complex on the specificity of cyclic lipopeptide derived induced disease resistance.

Relationship between Perioperative N-Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP) and Complications in Thoracic Surgery

Background: In cardiac surgery, the N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level is reportedly correlated with the onset of postoperative complications. We examined the relationship between the NT-proBNP level and perioperative complications in thoracic surgery and elucidated the significance of NT-proBNP measurement. Methods: We evaluated 48 patients excluding hemodialysis patients who underwent lung resection from November 2015 to February 2016. NT-proBNP measurement was performed three times preoperatively on postoperative days 2 and 5. We examined the relationship between clinical background factors such as preoperative comorbidity and the development of postoperative complications. Based on established criteria for surgical complications (Clavien-Dindo classification), grade ≥ II was defined as a complications. We classified the patients into two groups (with or without complications) and compared and examined the background factors between the groups. Results: The study included 48 patients (33 male, 15 female) with an average age of 72 years (range, 35 - 86 years). Preoperative comorbidities included cardiovascular disease in five patients, diabetes mellitus in four, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in six. The average operation time was 163 (29 - 308) minutes, and the bleeding volume was 30 (10 - 620) ml. Early complications were confirmed in 11 patients, and late complications were confirmed in 7 patients. A high NT-proBNP level on postoperative day 5 was an independent risk factor for late complications. Conclusion: The perioperative NT-proBNP level is considered to be a predictor of complications. Its measurement is useful for predicting postoperative complications, and careful perioperative management is required for patients with high levels.
