AIM To investigate non-ossifying fibromas(NOFs) common fibrous bone lesions in children that occur in bones of the lower *** We analyzed 44 cases of NOF including 47 lesions, which were referred with a working diagnosis of neoplastic lesions. Lesions were located in the upper extremities(1 proximal humerus, 1 distal radius) and the lower extremities(25 distal femurs, 12 proximal and 4 distal tibias, and 4 proximal fibulas).RESULTS Three cases had NOFs in multiple anatomical locations(femur and fibula in 1 case, femur and tibia in 2 cases). Overall, larger lesions > 4 cm and lesion expansion at the cortex were seen in 21% and 32% of cases, respectively. Multiple lesions with bilateral symmetry in the lower extremities suggest that these NOFs were developmental bone defects. Two patients suffered from fracture and were treated without surgery, one in the radius and one in the femur. Lesions in the upper extremities(i.e., humerus of a 4-year-old female and radius of a 9-year-old male) expanded at the cortex and lesion size increased with slow *** NOFs in the lower extremity had fewer clinical problems, regardless of their size and expansiveness. In these two upper extremity cases, the NOFs had aggressive biological features. It seems that there is a site specific difference, especially between the upper extremity and the lower extremity. Furthermore, NOFs in the radius are predisposed to fracture because of the slender structure of the radius and the susceptibility to stress.

Basaloid squamous carcinoma (BSC) of the esophagus is a rare esophageal tumor. A 79-year-old man with a history of proximal gastrectomy for gastric adenocarcinoma in 2000 was followed-up by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) annually. In June 2010, EGD revealed a new protruding lesion in the cervical esophagus. The small lesion was approximately 5 mm in size. A biopsy specimen showed poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. We performed endoscopic mucosal resection using a cap-fi tted endoscope (EMRC). The histological diagnosis of the endoscopically resected specimen was BSC and the invasion depth was limited to the muscularis mucosae. Horizontal and vertical margins were negative. We report the case of superfi cial BSC in the cervical esophagus successfully resected by EMRC.

BACKGROUND The effectiveness of sofosbuvir/ribavirin(SOF/RBV) combination therapy,which is one of the 1 st-choice therapeutic options for patients with hepatitis C virus(HCV) genotype 2(HCV-G2) in Japan according to the most recent version of the Japan Society of Hepatology guideline, for patients who experienced failure of the ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir plus ribavirin(OBV/PTV/r+RBV) combination therapy, which was another option for patients with HCV-G2, is *** SUMMARY We evaluated the effects of SOF/RBV combination therapy in two patients with genotype 2 a who could not achieve a sustained virological response(SVR) by OBV/PTV/r+RBV combination therapy. One patient was complicated with VogtKoyanagi-Harada(VKH) disease. Resistance-associated variations before SOF/RBV combination therapy were not detected in two patients. Both patients had an SVR at 12 wk after the treatment(SVR12). Regarding adverse events(AEs), itching, chill, a dull feeling in the throat and cough as well as increase of alanine transaminase level were shown in one patient, while a headache and deterioration of light aversion probably due to the recurrence of VKH disease were shown in the other patients. In addition, the latter patient developed arthralgia and morning stiffness approximately 7 wk after the therapy and turned out to be diagnosed with rheumatoid *** SOF/RBV therapy might be effective for patients experiencing failure of OBV/PTV/r+RBV therapy, but caution should be taken regarding the AEs.
