Enhancement of Visual Attention by Color Revealed Using Electroencephalography

Attention constitutes a fundamental psychological feature guiding our mental effort toward specific objects, concurrent with processes such as memory, reasoning, and imagination. Visual attention, crucial for selecting surrounding information, often decreases in older adults and patients with cerebrovascular disorders. Effective methods to enhance attention are scarce. Here, we investigated whether color information influences visual attention and brain activity during task performance, utilizing EEG. We examined 13 healthy young adults (seven women and six men;mean age: 21.2 ± 0.58 years) using 19-electrode electroencephalograms to assess the impact of color information on visual attention. The Clinical Assessment for Attention cancellation test was conducted under the black, red, and blue color conditions. Wilcoxon’s signed-rank test was used to assess differences in task performance (task time and error) between conditions. Spearman’s rank correlation was utilized to examine the correlation in power levels between task performance and color conditions. Significant variations in total task errors were observed among color conditions. The black condition exhibited the highest error frequency (0.7 ± 0.9 times), followed by the red condition (0.5 ± 0.8 times), with the lowest error frequency occurring in the blue (0.2 ± 0.4 times) condition (black vs. red: P = 0.03;black vs. blue: P = 0.00;red vs. blue: P = 0.032). No time difference was observed. The black condition showed negative delta and high-gamma correlations in the central electrodes. The red condition revealed positive alpha and low-gamma correlations in the frontal and occipital areas. Although no correlations were observed in the blue condition, it enhanced attentional performance. Positive alpha and low-gamma waves might be crucial for spotting attentional errors in key areas. Our findings provide insights into the effects of color information on visual attention and potential neural correlates associated with attentional processes. In conclusion, our

AIM To evaluate the psychometric properties of a newly developed questionnaire,known as the gastroesophageal reflux and dyspepsia therapeutic efficacy and satisfaction test(GERD-TEST),in patients with GERD.METHODS Japanese patients with predominant GERD symptoms recruited according to the Montreal definition were treated for 4 wk using a standard dose of proton pump inhibitor(PPI). The GERD-TEST and the Medical Outcome Study Short Form-8 Health Survey(SF-8) were administered at baseline and after 4 wk of treatment. The GERD-TEST contains three domains: the severity of GERD and functional dyspepsia(FD) symptoms(5 items),the level of dissatisfaction with daily life(DS)(4 items),and the therapeutic efficacy as assessed by the patients and medication compliance(4 items).RESULTS A total of 290 patients were eligible at baseline; 198 of these patients completed 4 wk of PPI therapy. The internal consistency reliability as evaluated using the Cronbach's α values for the GERD,FD and DS subscales ranged from 0.75 to 0.82. The scores for the GERD,FD and DS items/subscales were significantly correlated with the physical and mental component summary scores of the SF-8. After 4 wk of PPI treatment,the scores for the GERD items/subscales were greatly reduced,ranging in value from 1.51 to 1.87 and with a large effect size(P < 0.0001,Cohen's d; 1.29-1.63). Statistically significant differences in the changes in the scores for the GERD items/subscales were observed between treatment responders and non-responders(P < 0.0001).CONCLUSION The GERD-TEST has a good reliability,a good convergent and concurrent validity,and is responsive to the effects of treatment. The GERD-TEST is a simple,easy to understand,and multifaceted PRO instrument applicable to both clinical trials and the primary care of GERD patients.

It is poorly understood how plants control their growth by cell division, elongation, and differentiation. We have characterized a seedling-lethal mutant segregation distortion 3 （sd3） that showed a very dwarf phenotype when grown in the light and, in the dark, had short hypocotyls with reduced ploidy levels. The corresponding gene of SD3 encodes a protein with high similarity to yeast translocase on the inner mitochondrial membrane 21 （TIM21）, which is a component of the TIM23 complex. Indeed, SD3 protein fused to GFP localized in the mitochondria. SD3 overexpression increased cotyledon size in the light and hypocotyl thickness in the dark. The expression of genes for several subunits of the respiratory-chain complexes III and IV was up-regulated in SD3-overexpressing plants. Furthermore, these plants showed high levels of ATP whereas those of sd3 were low. These results suggested that SD3 induced an increase in cell size by raising the expression of the respiratory-chain subunit genes and hence increased the intracellular ATP levels, We propose that intracellular ATP levels regulated by mitochondria control plant organ size.

BACKGROUND Although contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)using gadoxetic acid has been shown to have higher accuracy,sensitivity,and specificity for the detection and characterization of hepatic metastases compared with other modalities,the long examination time would limit the broad indication.Several abbreviated enhanced MRI(Ab-MRI)protocols without dynamic phases have been proposed to achieve equivalent diagnostic performance for the detection of colorectal liver metastases.However,an optimal protocol has not been established,and no studies have assessed the diagnostic performance of Ab-MRI combined with contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CE-CT),which is the preoperative imaging of colorectal cancer staging in clinical settings,to determine the best therapeutic strategy.AIM To compare the diagnostic performance of two kinds of Ab-MRI protocol with the standard MRI protocol and a combination of the Ab-MRI protocol and CE-CT for the detection of colorectal liver metastases.METHODS Study participants comprised 87 patients(51 males,36 females;mean age,67.2±10.8 years)who had undergone gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and CE-CT during the initial work-up for colorectal cancer from 2010 to 2021.Each exam was independently reviewed by two readers in three reading sessions:(1)Only single-shot fast spin echo(FSE)T2-weighted or fat-suppressed-FSE-T2-weighted,diffusion-weighted,and hepatobiliary-phase images(Ab-MRI protocol 1 or 2);(2)all acquired MRI sequences(standard protocol);and(3)a combination of an Ab-MRI protocol(1 or 2)and CE-CT.Diagnostic performance was then statistically analyzed.RESULTS A total of 380 Lesions were analyzed,including 195 metastases(51.4%).Results from the two Ab-MRI protocols were similar.The sensitivity,specificity,and positive and negative predictive values from Ab-MRI were non-inferior to those from standard MRI(P>0.05),while those from the combination of Ab-MRI protocol and CE-CT tended to be higher than those from Ab-MRI alone,although the difference was not significant(P>0.05)

AIM: To investigate the clinical outcome of double balloon enteroscopy (DBE)-assisted endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (DB-ERCP) in patients with altered gastrointestinal anatomy. METHODS: Between September 2006 and April 2011, 47 procedures of DB-ERCP were performed in 28 patients with a Roux-en-Y total gastrectomy (n = 11), Billroth Ⅱ gastrectomy (n = 15), or Roux-en-Y anastomosis with hepaticojejunostomy (n = 2). DB-ERCP was performed using a short-type DBE combined with several technical innovations such as using an endoscope attachment, marking by submucosal tattooing,selectively applying contrast medium, and CO2 insufflations. RESULTS: The papilla of Vater or hepaticojejunostomy site was reached in its entirety with a 96% success rate (45/47 procedures). There were no significant differences in the success rate of reaching the blind end with a DBE among Roux-en-Y total gastrectomy (96%), Billroth Ⅱ reconstruction (94%), or pancreatoduodenectomy (100%), respectively (P = 0.91). The total successful rate of cannulation and contrast enhancement of the target bile duct in patients whom the blind end was reached with a DBE was 40/45 procedures (89%). Again, there were no significant differences in the success rate of cannulation and contrast enhancement of the target bile duct with a DBE among Roux-en-Y total gastrectomy (88 %), Billroth Ⅱ reconstruction (89%), or pancreatoduodenectomy (100%), respectively (P = 0.67). Treatment was achieved in all 40 procedures (100%) in patients whom the contrast enhancement of the bile duct was successful. Common endoscopic treatments were endoscopic biliary drainage (24 procedures) and extraction of stones (14 procedures). Biliary drainage was done by placement of plastic stents. Stones extraction was done by lithotomy with the mechanical lithotripter followed by extraction with a basket or by the balloon pull-through method. Early drinking is considered to result in making tolerant of alcohol consumption and a higher prevalence of alcohol related disorders in the later. We focused generational impacts on drinking rate among high school students based on multiple nationwide data. The surveys were nationwide, cross-sectional random sampling surveys given every 4 years from the Japanese Youth Tobacco and Alcohol Surveys, 1996 to 2008. Participants were male 53,925 high school students from 7th grade to 11th grade. We divided to the three follow-up groups every 4 years from 1996 to 2004 for male junior high school students in 7th grades and the end periods were 4 years later in 11th grades. Outcome measures in this study were life time drinking, current drinking within 30 days and weekly drinking. All drinking rates decreased each at 7th and at 11th grade. The increments in these drinking rates from 7th grade to 11th grade in males decreased gradually in recent follow-up groups. Generational impacts should be considered by using follow-up groups to study drinking behaviors among students.

日本肝胆胰外科学会(JSHBPS)于2007年出版第一版胆道肿瘤(胆管癌、胆囊癌及壶腹癌)临床实践指南,于2014年更新第二版,2021年英文第三版胆道肿瘤临床实践指南围绕6个主题提出若干临床问题,基于相关循证医学证据并组织专家讨论后,最终确定推荐意见、推荐强度以及推荐说明。根据证据推荐分级的评估、制订与评价(GRADE)系统,推荐强度被分为1级(强)或者2级(弱)。英文第三版胆道肿瘤临床实践指南中提出的31个临床问题涵盖:(1)预防性治疗;(2)诊断;(3)胆道引流;(4)外科治疗;(5)化疗;(6)放疗。31个临床问题中,14个问题给予推荐强度为强的推荐意见,14个问题给予推荐强度为弱的推荐意见,剩余的3个问题未给予推荐意见。每条推荐意见都进行推荐强度说明。最新版指南基于循证医学证据,为临床提供了重要建议。未来与癌症登记数据库协作将是评估指南和建立新证据的关键。
