Hyperbaric Oxygen Stimulates the Proliferation and Differentiation of Raw264.7 Cells

Background: Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Therapy improves the outcome of various types of sugery, such as postoperative bone grafts, fixation of jaw fractures, and osteoplasty of jaw deformities. Therefore, it is important to determine the effects of HBO on bone regeneration. The purpose of this study was to clarify the influence of a hyperbaric oxygen environment on bone regeneration at the osteoclastogenic cytokines level. Sample & Methods: RAW264.7 cells were stimulated under the various conditions by using a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. We evaluated the ability of the RAW264.7 macrophages to proliferate, differentiate and produce various osteoclastogenic cyto-kines. Results: A hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) environment and high concentration oxygen (HCO) environment increase cellular proliferation in a time-dependent manner. On the other hand, a HCO environment and a hyperbaric with room air (HBA) environment enhanced the differentiation of RAW264.7 cells. In addition, NFATc1 and c-Fos were increased by both the HBA environment and HCO environment. However, the effects of HBA and HCO environments were in contrast with each other with regard to RANK, TNF-α, C-FMS and TRAP. Conclusions: It was suggested that a HBO environment influenced the bone regeneration by altering osteoclastogenic cytokines level, and that a HCO environment and HBA environment acted independently on the proliferation and differentiation of macrophages and the secretion of osteoclastogenic cytokines, and that they acted in concert in a hyperbaric oxygen environment to induce conditions favoring regeneration.

Extremely well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the stomach: Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features

AIM： Minimal deviation carcinoma of the uterine cervix, otherwise known as extremely well-differentiated adenocarcinoma （EWDA）, is characterized by its benign microscopic appearance in contrast to its aggressive behavior. In order to elucidate the clinicopathological features and biological behavior of the gastric counterpart of EWDA, we, using immunohistochemistry, analyzed nine lesions for the phenotypic expression, proliferative activity, and the expression of oncogene-associated products. METHODS： Clinicopathological features, including preoperative biopsy diagnosis, were reviewed. Using immunohitstochemistry, Ki-67 labeling index and expression of p53 and c-erbB-2 protein in the gastric lesions were ***： Locations in the middle or upper third of the stomach and polypoid macroscopic features are characteristic of EWDA of the stomach. Although 4 of the 9 lesions showed only focal lymphatic or venous invasion, lymph node metastasis was not present and none of the patients died of the lesions （mean follow-up period, 56 too）. All 9 cases of EWDA could be classified into gastric phenotype （5 lesions） and intestinal phenotype （4 lesions）. The former resembled gastric foveolar epithelium, mucous neck cells or pyloric glands, but their papillary structures were frequently elongated and the tumor cellsand their nuclei were slightly larger and more hyperchromatic compared to normal epithelium. The latter resembled intestinal metaplasia with minimal nulcear atypia and irregular glands; two of these lesions demonstrated complete intestinal phenotype, while two demonstrated incomplete intestinal phenotype. Ki-67 labeling index was low and none of the cases revealed over-expression of p53 and c-erbB-2 protein. CONCLUSION： Unlike minimal deviation carcinoma of the cervix, these findings suggest that EWDA of the stomach is a lesion of low-grade malignancy. The microscopic mechanism of thermal transport in liquids and amorphous solids has been an outstanding problem for a long *** have been several approaches to explain the thermal conductivities in these systems,for example,Bridgman's formula for simple liquids,the concept of the minimum thermal conductivity for amorphous solids,and the thermal resistance network model for amorphous ***,we present a ubiquitous formula to calculate the thermal conductivities of liquids and amorphous solids in a unified way,and compare it with previous *** calculated thermal conductivities using this formula without fitting parameters are in excellent agreement with the experimental *** formula not only provides a detailed microscopic mechanism of heat transfer in these systems,but also resolves the discrepancies between existing formulae and experimental data.

Dimensional crossover of heat conduction in amorphous polyimide nanofibers

The mechanism of thermal conductivity in amorphous polymers, especially polymer fibers, is unclear in comparison with that in inorganic materials. Here, we report the observation of a crossover of heat conduction behavior from three dimensions to quasi-one dimension in polyimide nanofibers at a given temperature. A theoretical model based on the random walk theory has been proposed to quantitatively describe the interplay between the inter-chain hopping and the intra-chain hopping in nanofibers. This model explains well the diameter dependence of thermal conductivity and also speculates on the upper limit of thermal conductivity of amorphous polymers in the quasi-1D limit.

Non-contact Acoustic Contour Imaging Method Using Phase Difference in Extremely Shallow Underground

Buried object which exists at extremely shallow underground can be detected by using an acoustic vibration and a SLDV （scanning laser Doppler vibrometer）. Non-contact acoustic exploration can be realized by using air coupled sound. It was confirmed that discovery and the identification of a buried thing were possible using the OFR method （optimum frequency range method）. However, in this method, only the amplitude of the vibration speed spectrum is used and did not use the phase information. Therefore a new imaging method is proposed that used the phase information of the vibration speed spectrum. From the experimental results, the possibility of the outline extraction by using the phase difference between each scan point is confirmed. As a future task, the phase difference image will become clearer by changing the scan point density and long duration time of emitted wave.

Adult case of an omphalomesenteric cyst resected by laparoscopic-assisted surgery

This report describes an extremely rare adult case of an omphalomesenteric cyst resected by laparoscopicassisted surgery. A 29-years-old Japanese man was referred and admitted to Kyushu University Hospital because of an abdominal mass and an elevated serum CEA （carcinoembryonic antigen） level （21.3 ng/mL） in August 2001. Abdominal CT and US demonstrated a cystic mass with septum and calcification. Laparoscopy showed a large mass to be attached to his abdominal wall, measuring 110 mm × 70 mm× 50 mm and filled with mucus. The mass was resected by laparoscopicassisted surgery. The histological findings of its wall showed fibromuscular tissue, adipose tissue, calcification, and an intestinal structure. It was finally diagnosed to be an omphalomesenteric cyst.

BACKGROUND We recently reported on a hereditary enteropathy associated with a gene encoding a prostaglandin transporter and referred to as chronic enteropathy associated with SLCO2 A1 gene(CEAS). Crohn's disease(CD) is a major differential diagnosis of CEAS, because these diseases share some clinical features. Therefore, there is a need to develop a convenient screening test to distinguish CEAS from *** To examine whether prostaglandin E major urinary metabolites(PGE-MUM) can serve as a biomarker to distinguish CEAS from *** This was a transactional study of 20 patients with CEAS and 98 patients with *** was diagnosed by the confirmation of homozygous or compound heterozygous mutation of SLCO2 A1. We measured the concentration of PGEMUM in spot urine by radioimmunoassay, and the concentration was compared between the two groups of patients. We also determined the optimal cut-off value of PGE-MUM to distinguish CEAS from CD by receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve *** Twenty Japanese patients with CEAS and 98 patients with CD were ***-MUM concentration in patients with CEAS was significantly higher than that in patients with CD(median 102.7 vs 27.9 μg/g × Cre, P < 0.0001). One log unit increase in PGE-MUM contributed to 7.3 increase in the likelihood for the diagnosis of CEAS [95% confidence interval(CI) 3.2-16.7]. A logistic regression analysis revealed that the association was significant even after adjusting confounding factors(adjusted odds ratio 29.6, 95%CI 4.7-185.7). ROC curve analysis revealed the optimal PGE-MUM cut-off value for the distinction of CEAS from CD to be 48.9 μg/g × Cre with 95.0% sensitivity and 79.6% *** PGE-MUM measurement is a convenient, non-invasive and useful test for the distinction of CEAS from CD.
