Simplifying Laparoscopic Surgery for Left Side Colon and Rectal Cancer Using Linear Stapler for Vascular Ligation: A Prospective Cohort Study

Introduction: Systematic lymphadenectomy and ligation of the feeding artery is extremely important when performing radical resection in colorectal cancer. However, vascular surgery via laparoscopy requires advanced skills and techniques;thus, this procedure needs to be simplified while maintaining quality of the surgery to make it a preferred technique for the surgeons. Methods: There were 49 patients who underwent laparoscopic sigmoidectomy or anterior resection till T2 level for sigmoid colon cancer and recto-sigmoid colon cancer. We analyzed short-term and long-term outcomes between stapling ligation and clipping ligation techniques used in these surgeries. Results: The mean volume of blood loss in the stapling ligation group was 12.8 ± 12.3 ml, which was significantly lower than 41.9 ± 71.2 ml of mean volume of blood loss in the clipping ligation group. There was no significant difference in the mean duration of surgery, the mean number of harvested lymph nodes, morbidity, recurrence, and 5-year relapse free survival rates between the 2 groups. Conclusions: This study demonstrates a surgical technique using staplers for vascular treatment of tumor-feeding arteries as a new technical improvement in laparoscopic colectomy for the treatment of early-stage colon cancer. We found that the described procedure was technically safe, simple, convenient, and oncologically valid.

Removal of hexavalent chromium from water by Z-scheme photocatalysis using TiO_(2)(rutile)nanorods loaded with Au core-Cu_(2)0 shell particles

All-solid-state Z-scheme photocatalysts,containing Cu_(2)O,TiO_(2)(rutile),and Au as the elec-tron mediator,were prepared and applied to the reduction of Cr(Ⅵ)in aqueous *** Cu_(2)O-Au-TiO_(2) composites were prepared by loading Au core-Cu_(2)O shell hemisphere particles on TiO_(2)(rutile)nanorods using a two-step photocatalytic deposition ***-der ultraviolet-visible(UV-vis)light illumination,the Cu_(2)O-Au-TiO_(2) composites exhibited higher photocatalytic Cr(Ⅵ)reduction activities than those exhibited by single TiO_(2)(rutile)and Cu_(2)*** this reaction,a precipitate containing Cr,which was considered to be Cr(OH)_(3),was deposited site-selectively on the Au core-Cu_(2)O shell particles of the composites,indi-cating that the reduction site of the composite was Cu_(2)O,and the reaction proceeded accord-ing to the *** Cu_(2)O-Au-TiO_(2) composites also exhibited photocatalytic activity under visible light *** oxidation state of Cu in the Cu_(2)O-Au-TiO_(2) composite gradually changed from Cu(Ⅰ)to Cu(Ⅱ)during the photocatalytic Cr(Ⅵ)*** the composite maintained its high photocatalytic performance even after *** role of Au in the Cu_(2)O-Au-TiO_(2) composite was examined by comparing the properties of the Cu_(2)O-Au-TiO_(2) composite with those of the Cu_(2)O-TiO_(2) composite prepared via direct Cu_(2)O deposition on TiO_(2).

The genetic architecture of insecticide resistance within a natural population of <i>Drosophila melanogaster</i>

The dynamics of genetic variation in susceptibility to insecticides within a natural population of Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen) at Katsunuma (yamanashi Prefecture, Japan) was examined. Two resistance factors for three organophosphate insecticides (OPs), a resistant-type acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (cytochrome P450), have already been suggested to be involved within the Katsunuma population. In this study, genetic variances were estimated for susceptibility to other classes of chemicals than OPs, permethrin (a pyrethroid) and dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT;an organo-chlorine), which existed simultaneously with genetic variances for susceptibility to OPs. Analyses of variance for susceptibility to permethrin and DDT showed highly significant variation among isofemale lines from the Katsunuma population, and the genetic variances for susceptibility to each insecticide fluctuated differently during this period. The impacts of fluctuations of genetic variation in susceptibility to one class of insecticides on genetic variation in susceptibility to other classes of insecticides existing simultaneously within the natural population were discussed.
