Flow Electrification of Insulated Liquid in Metal Pipes

When relative motion occurs between a liquid and a solid, the two phases carry electric charge with opposite signs. The created charge easily accumulates in the liquid, and the amount of the charge carried in an insulated liquid refers to many factors, such as contact area with the solid surface, the contact time, and so forth. However, current theories agree that the amount of charge created during flow electrification is proportional to the contact surface. In this paper, the classical wall current theory is applied to establish an interfacial electrical double-layer model of flow electrification phenomena when an insulated liquid passes over metal pipe surface. Meanwhile, in conjunction with charge relaxation function, the relation between the charge density and flow velocity, the contact time and the contact area is obtained during the liquid flowing process. The experimental result demonstrates that the flowing charge carried in the insulated liquid is not simply proportional to the contact area, but has a non-linear dependence on the contact area and the contact time. Moreover, down flow experimental equipment pipes of different length and diameter, and dielectric hydraulic oil VG46 are used in an experimental study of laminar flow, in order to understand electrification phenomena in dielectric liquid flowing over metal pipes of different length and aperture. If they both increase linearly, charge relaxation will increase exponentially. As a result, the test result verifies related theoretical analysis, and the method given provides a theoretical basis to analyze interracial electrical phenomena.

Diversion colitis and pouchitis: A mini-review

Diversion colitis is characterized by inflammation of the mucosa in the defunctioned segment of the colon after colostomy or ileostomy. Similar to diversion colitis, diversion pouchitis is an inflammatory disorder occurring in the ileal pouch, resulting from the exclusion of the fecal stream and a subsequent lack of nutrients from luminal bacteria. Although the vast majority of patients with surgically-diverted gastrointestinal tracts remain asymptomatic, it has been reported that diversion colitis and pouchitis might occur in almost all patients with diversion. Surgical closure of the stoma, with reestablishment of gut continuity, is the only curative intervention available for patients with diversion disease. Pharmacologic treatments using short-chain fatty acids, mesalamine, or corticosteroids are reportedly effective for those who are not candidates for surgical reestablishment; however, there are no established assessment criteria for determining the severity of diversion colitis, and no management strategies to date. Therefore, in this mini-review, we summarize and review various recently-reported treatments for diversion disease. We are hopeful that the information summarized here will assist physicians who treat patients with diversion colitis and pouchitis, leading to better case management.

Thermochemical Nonequilibrium 2D Modeling of Nitrogen Inductively Coupled Plasma Flow

Two-dimensional（2D） numerical simulations of thermochemical nonequilibrium inductively coupled plasma（ICP） flows inside a 10-kW inductively coupled plasma wind tunnel（ICPWT） were carried out with nitrogen as the working gas.Compressible axisymmetric NavierStokes（N-S） equations coupled with magnetic vector potential equations were solved.A fourtemperature model including an improved electron-vibration relaxation time was used to model the internal energy exchange between electron and heavy particles.The third-order accuracy electron transport properties（3rd AETP） were applied to the simulations.A hybrid chemical kinetic model was adopted to model the chemical nonequilibrium process.The flow characteristics such as thermal nonequilibrium,inductive discharge,effects of Lorentz force were made clear through the present study.It was clarified that the thermal nonequilibrium model played an important role in properly predicting the temperature field.The prediction accuracy can be improved by applying the 3rd AETP to the simulation for this ICPWT.

BACKGROUND Although the usefulness of endoscopic scores,such as the Mayo Endoscopic Subscore(MES),Ulcerative Colitis Endoscopic Index of Severity(UCEIS),and Ulcerative Colitis Colonoscopic Index of Severity(UCCIS),and biomarkers such as fecal calprotectin(FC)for predicting relapse in ulcerative colitis(UC)has been reported,few studies have included endoscopic scores for evaluating the entire colon.AIM To compare the usefulness of FC value and MES,UCEIS,and UCCIS for predicting relapse in patients with UC in clinical remission.METHODS In total,75 patients with UC in clinical and endoscopic remission who visited our institution between February 2019 and March 2022 were enrolled.The diagnosis of UC was confirmed based on the clinical presentation,endoscopic findings,and histology,according to the current established criteria for UC.Fecal samples were collected the day before or after the colonoscopy for measurement of FC.Endoscopic evaluations were performed using MES,UCEIS,and UCCIS.The primary outcome measure of this study was the assessment of the association between relapse within 12 mo and MES,UCEIS,UCCIS,and FC.The secondary outcome was the comparison between endoscopic scores and biomarkers in en-rolled patients with UC with mucosal healing.RESULTSFC and UCCIS showed a significant correlation with UCEIS (r = 0.537, P < 0.001 and r = 0.957, P < 0.001, respectively).Receiver-operating characteristic analysis for predicting MES 0 showed that the area under the curve ofUCCIS was significantly higher than that of FC (P < 0.01). During the 1-year observation period, 18 (24%) patientsexperienced a relapse, and both the FC and UCCIS of the relapse group were significantly higher than that of theremission group. The cut-off values for predicting relapse were set at FC = 323 mg/kg and UCCIS = 10.2. The areaunder the curve of the receiver-operating characteristic analysis for predicting relapse did not show a significantdifference between FC and UCCIS. Clinical significance of hypoechoic submandibular gland lesions in type 1 autoimmune pancreatitis

AIM To assess the role of ultrasonography of submandibular glands(SGs) in the diagnosis of type 1 autoimmune pancreatitis(AIP). METHODS Thirty-seven patients who were definitively diagnosed with type 1 AIP according to the international consensus diagnostic criteria(ICDC) for AIP at our institution between December 1990 and April 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Findings by physical examination, ultrasonography, and scintigraphy of SGs were analyzed to reach a diagnosis based on the ICDC for AIP. The efficacy of corticosteroid treatment in the resolution of hypoechoic lesions in SGs was also evaluated by assessment with ultrasonography before and after treatment in 18 cases.RESULTS The sensitivity of multiple hypoechoic lesions in SGs by ultrasonography for the diagnosis of sialadenitis in type 1 AIP(84%) was higher than that of physical examination(46%), scintigraphy(28%), and SGs thickness(49%). Ultrasonographic evidence of hypoechoic lesions in SGs improved the definitive diagnosis of sialadenitis and type 1 AIP by the ICDCcriteria in 11(30%) and 2(5.4%) cases, respectively. Multiple hypoechoic lesions in SGs were resolved or disappear by corticosteroid administration in 14 of 16 cases with hypoechoic lesions in SGs, whereas the ultrasonographic findings in the remaining 2 cases with hypoechoic lesions in SGs and the 2 cases with homogenous SG parenchyma remained unchanged after corticosteroid administration.CONCLUSION SG ultrasonography to detect multiple hypoechoic lesions might be useful for type 1 AIP diagnosis by improving diagnostic accuracy together with the ICDC sialadenitis criteria.

A spectroscopic study on the effect of ultra-violet solar radiation in Antarctica on the human skin fbroblast cells

A study on the effect of the solar ultra-violet radiation on the human skin fibroblast cells revealed that the production of matrix metalloproteinase-2 was inhibited by the radiation.A CO2 incubator connected by optical fibers to a reflector telescope for collecting the solar light was built at Syowa station by the 49th Japanese Antarctica Research Expedition.The direction of the telescope was continuously controlled by a sun-tracker to follow the movement of the Sun automatically.The intensity of the collected light was monitored by a portable spectrophotometer housed inside.The human skin fibroblast cells were incubated in the CO2 chamber to investigate the effect of the solar radiation at Syowa station and were compared with those reference experiments at a laboratory in Japan.The results showed cell damage by strong UV radiation.The production of matrix metalloproteinase-2 was prompted by the moderate UV-B,but was inhibited by the strong UV-B radiation,as studied under laboratory conditions in Japan.The effect of strong solar radiation at Syowa station involving the radiation of UV-B region was estimated to be of the same extent of the radiation caused by an artificial UV-B light with the intensity more than 50 mJ/cm2.

Efficacy and safety of telaprevir- and simeprevir-based triple therapies for older patients with chronic hepatitis C

AIM To evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of telaprevir(TVR)-and simeprevir(SMV)-based triple therapies in elderly patients, specifically patients aged 66 years or older.METHODS The present study enrolled 112 and 76 Japanese patients with chronic hepatitis C virus genotype 1b infection who were treated with a 12-wk TVR-based or SMV-based triple therapy, respectively, followed by a dual therapy that included pegylated interferon α and ribavirin(RBV) for 12 wk. The patients were categorized into two groups according to age as follows: A younger group of patients aged ≤ 65 years old and an older group of patients aged > 65 years old. Among the patients treated with TVR-based triple therapy, 34 patients were included in the older group. The median ages were 56 years(range: 28-65 years) in the younger group and 69 years(range: 66-81 years) in the older group. Among the patients treated with SMV-based triple therapy, 39 patients were included in the older group. The median ages were 59 years(range: 36-65 years) in the younger group and 71 years(range: 66-86 years) in the older group. The clinical, biochemical and virological data were analyzed before and during treatment.RESULTS Among the patients treated with the TVR-based triple therapy, no significant difference in the sustained virological response(SVR) was found between the younger(80.8%) and older(88.2%) groups. The SVR rates for patients with the interleukin 28B(IL28B)(rs8099917) TG/GGgenotypes(73.9% and 60.0% in the younger and older groups, respectively) were significantly lower than for patients with the IL28B TT-genotype(86.3% and 92.9%, respectively). The cumulative exposure to RBV for the entire 24-wk treatment period(as a percentage of the target dose) was significantly higher in the younger group than in the older group(91.7% vs 66.7%, respectively, P < 0.01), but the cumulative exposure to TVR was not significantly different between the younger and older groups(91.6% vs 81.9%, respectively). Serum cystatin C can be used as a marker of renal function even in patients with intestinal urinary diversion

Objective:Recently,serum cystatin C(CysC)has been used as a novel marker of renal function.However,there is a lack of data on CysC levels in patients with intestinal urinary diversion(UD).Here we report CysC levels in such patients.Methods:We prospectively observed 38 patients who were diagnosed with bladder cancer and subsequently treated with radical cystectomy and UD at our institution in 2012 and 2013.Serum creatinine(sCr)and CysC were obtained optionally at the same time at least 1 month after radical cystectomy and UD.Results:The median CysC and sCr concentrations were 1.12 mg/L(range 0.75-2.47 mg/L)and 0.99 mg/dL(range 0.61-2.22 mg/dL),respectively.The median estimated concentrations of glomerular filtration rate(GFR)based on CysC(eGFRcys)and GFR based on creatinine(eGFRcreat)were 61.08 mL/min/1.73 m^2(range 22.64e99.89 mL/min/1.73 m^2)and 58.01 mL/min/1.73 m^2(range 23.48e91.82 mL/min/1.73 m2),respectively.CysC had a significant correlation with sCr(r=0.8607,p<0.0001)and eGFRcreat(r=-0.8993,p<0.0001).eGFRcys also had a significant correlation with eGFRcreat(r=0.8104,p<0.0001).Conclusion:The correlation between CysC and sCr was strong and the correlation coefficient was equivalent to that in patients without UD.The results suggest that CysC is not affected by UD and can be used as a marker of renal function similarly to sCr in patients with UD.

Cervical Castleman's disease mimicking lymph node metastasis of esophageal carcinoma

Castleman's disease(CD) is an uncommon benign lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown etiology. A rare case of cervical CD diagnosed at lymph node dissection for esophageal carcinoma is reported. An esophageal tumor was identified in a 67-year-old man during a follow-up examination after surgery for oral carcinoma. Esophagoscopy revealed a type 1 tumor in the cervical esophagus. Histology of esophagoscopic biopsies indicated squamous cell carcinoma. Contrastenhanced computed tomography revealed swollen lymph nodes of the right cervical region. No distant metastasis was detected. Esophageal carcinoma, T2N2M0, Stage ⅢA was diagnosed. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy was recommended, but the patient rejected the chemotherapy. The patient underwent laparoscopic-assisted transhiatal esophagectomy. The histopathological diagnosis was moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma with pT1bN0M0, Stage ⅠA. On histology, the swollen lymph nodes of the right cervical region revealed CD. The patient's postoperative course was relatively good.
