The ever-growing human population,coupled with the exigent need to meet the increasing demand for poultry meat and egg,has put the onus on poultry nutritionists and farmers to identify alternative feed ingredients that could assure the least-cost feed *** addition,the public desire for nonantibiotic-treated poultry products has also necessitated the ultimate search for potent antibiotic alternatives for use in poultry *** some identified alternatives are promising,their cost implications and technical know-how requirements may discourage their ease of adoption in *** use of plants and/or their by-products,like fruit pomaces,present a pocket-friendly advantage and as a result,are gaining much *** is traceable to their rich phytochemical profile,nutritional composition,ready availability,and relatively cheap *** fruit juice and wine pressing industries generate a plethora of fruit wastes ***,fruit pomaces contain appreciable dietary fibre,protein,and phenolic compounds,and thus,their adoption could serve the poultry industry in dual capacities including as substitutes to antibiotics and some conventional ***,there is a possibility to reduce fruit wastes produced and feed-cost in poultry farming from environmental and economical standpoints,*** review seeks to provide reinforcing evidence on the applicability and impact of fruit pomaces in poultry nutrition.

As the human population increases globally,the food animal industry has not been spared from the monumental demand for edible animal products,particularly *** has necessitated the simulta-neous expansion of the productivity of the animal sector to meet the ever-growing human *** antibiotics have been used in food animal production with commendable positive impacts on their growth performance,their sole contributive factor to the increasing incidence of antimicrobial resistance has ushered the strict restrictions placed on their use in the animal *** has handed a setback to both animals and farmers;thus,the intense push for a more sustainable antibiotic alternative for use in animal *** use of plants with concentrated phytogenic compounds has gained much interest due to their beneficial bioactivities,including antioxidant and selective *** the reported beneficial activities of phytogenic additives on animals vary due to their varying total polyphenol concentrations(TPC),red osier dogwood(ROD)plant materials boast of high TPC with excellent antioxidant prowess and growth improvement capacities compared to some plant extracts commonly used in ***,its adoption in research and commercial scale is still ***,the present review aims to provide concise information on the dietary potential of ROD plant materials in animal feeding.

In studies on the effects of mixing residues with different properties on decomposition rate and nutrient release,the extent of contact between the different residues is not *** this study,we used an experimental design where crop residues were spatially separated by a layer of *** were set up using young faba bean residue(low carbon(C)/nutrient ratio,L)and mature barley straw(high C/nutrient ratio,H).The microcosms comprised of two caps of PVC tubes,each filled with moist *** the two caps,there were three layers each separated from the others by fine nylon mesh with the middle layer being the moist interface *** had similar(H/H or L/L)or different(L/H)residue types,or only residue type(H/S or L/S)while the other cap had no *** treatments with only one residue,measured parameters,except microbial biomass P(MBP),were higher in L/S than H/*** treatments with two residues,all parameters were lowest in H/*** L/H compared to L/L after 14 days,available P and microbial biomass N(MBN)were lower,available N was similar and MBP was *** 28 days,available P and N were lower in L/H than L/L,but MBP and MBN did not *** L/H,measured resin P,MBP and MBN were higher than expected whereas available N was *** experimental design used in this study allows assessing the effect of residues on properties of the soil between them.

Theoretical performance simulation of a high pressure agro-forestry swirl nozzle

Equations of dynamic systems in droplet distribution at high pressure and boundary value flows in the swirl chamber of a swirl nozzle were used in conjunction with momentum equations of forces on moving curved vanes to develop mathematical models.A computer program in C++language was developed and used to simulate the effect of some flow and geometric parameters,including flow rate,pressure and swirl chamber diameter,on the spray performance of a high pressure agro-forestry swirl *** of the three performance parameters of axial flow rate,spray cone angle and output discharge(or performance)coefficient were studied as a function of any two combinations of the nozzle supply pressure,exit orifice diameter and swirl chamber *** study established that the spray cone angle of the discharge flow pattern varied from the minimum value of 40°for a swirl chamber diameter of 90 mm to 220°for 40 mm as the exit orifice diameter varied from the minimum value of 0.5 mm to 4.0 *** simulated nozzle output discharge coefficient could be varied from 0.98,when the nozzle supply pressure was 400 kPa to the minimum value of 0.001 at any of the other six simulated nozzle supply pressure values of 200,250,300,350,450 and 500 kPa by varying the exit orifice diameter from 0.5 mm to 4.0 *** pattern of variation of the simulated nozzle discharge coefficient values were similar to those obtained by measurement during the validation exercise in the laboratory although their sensitivities to the independent variables were *** results indicated that the range of nozzle discharge coefficient of 0.80 to 0.98 required for a well designed high pressure agro-forestry swirl nozzle has been *** the successful development of the C++computer program,a useful tool that will cut down on the rigor encountered and time spent by nozzle designers and evaluators during nozzle development process has been developed in the study.

Land tenure security is pertinent to achieving the sustainable development agenda in cities where land is needed and useful for development *** empirical research has been done to prove the importance of tenure security for investment,resilience,conservation,food security,as well as health and well-being,but it has not been clarified if and how land tenure security could adequately influence place loyalty and satisfaction with the residential environment,as it is clear that place loyalty and satisfaction are pertinent to inclusive *** the case of Ibadan City,the study examined how different dimensions of tenure security could determine residents’place loyalty and *** study employed a survey cross-sectional research design to distribute 514 structured questionnaires to household heads across 4 sampled peri-urban local government areas while 452 were retrieved for *** regression analysis model was employed to understand the association between tenure security dimensions and satisfaction(as model I)and loyalty(as model II).For model I,F=8.640,P=0.000,R=0.555,and R^(2)=0.308 were obtained;while for model II,F=9.157,P=0.001,R=0.415,and R^(2)=0.173 were *** thus means that residents’place loyalty and satisfaction can partly be explained by tenure *** particular,respondents with no eviction experience,recognized property rights,and invulnerable to eviction have higher odds of being satisfied and ***,we recommend protection,improvement,and upgrading of land tenure security as one of the means to promote place loyalty and satisfaction,which is essential to achieving inclusive and sustainable development.

Asymmetric Effect of Remittances on Environmental Degradation in Nigeria

Nigeria has become one of the sub-Saharan Africa’s largest remittance recipients. Despite the economic benefits of remittances, there is rising concern about their impact on environmental degradation. The NARDL approach was used to analyze time-series data from 1980 to 2018, to determine the impact of remittances increases and decreases on environmental degradation in Nigeria. The cointegration results show that remittances and environmental degradation have a long-run relationship. The study found that remittances is asymmetrically connected to ecological footprint(EFP) as a measure of environmental degradation both in the long run and short run whereas it is asymmetrically connected with CO2as a measure of environmental degradation in the long run only. The study also found that remittances increase contributes to environmental degradation in Nigeria in the long run.

Spinal muscular atrophy(SMA)is a genetic condition that results in selective lower motor neuron loss with concomitant muscle weakness and *** genetic cause of SMA was understood in 1995 when loss or impairment of the survival motor neuron 1(SMN1)gene was identified as the main contributing factor(Lefebvre et al.,1995).This,in combination with the discovery that humans have a“back-up”gene,SMN2,which can produce low levels(approximately 10%)of the full-length functional SMN protein,has led to the generation of SMA-specific gene *** was traditionally classified according to age of symptom onset and developmental milestones achieved,with life expectancy and severity varying between ***,SMN2 copy number is used as a proxy for the prediction of disease severity,with higher SMN2 copy number typically being associated with reduced severity of SMA,although this relationship is not absolute:some individuals with low SMN2 copy number have less severe SMA phenotypes and vice ***,the etiology of SMA is further complicated by other factors,such as non-typical nucleotide variants and SMN2-independent modifiers of disease severity.

Objective:This study compared the prevalence of intestinal helminths in Water,Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH) intervention and non-intervention communities in Abeokuta,***:Stool samples were collected from 225 respondents in a study carried out between july and November,*** samples were examined for presence of helminths using Formol-Ether concentration *** collected from stool samples were analyzed using SPSS for Windows(version 16).Results:Results showed that,at the intervention community,88 out of 113 respondents were infected with at least one helminth infection while at non-intervention community,80 out of 112 respondents were *** result revealed overall helminth prevalence of78% at Mawuko and 71% at *** both intervention(Mawuko) and non-intervention(Isolu) communities,hookworm was the most prevalent helminth observed(21% and18%,respectively) followed by Ascaris lumbricoides(13% and 13%,respectively),Taenia sp.(4% and 3%,respectively) and Trichostrongylus sp.(1% and 3%,respectively).Cases of single infections of Trichuris trichiura,Strongyloides stercoralis and Hymenolepsis nana were observed only at the non-intervention ***,*** occurred in the multiple infections observed at the intervention *** more(p < 0.05) cases of infections were observed in male(46%) at the intervention community than female(31%) while in non-intervention community females(39%) were significantly(p < 0.05) more infected than their male counterparts(32%).Conclusions:This study concludes that the Community Led-Total Sanitation intervention programme,which was executed in Mawuko was not effective as expected.
