Relationship of plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 gene 4G/5G polymorphisms to hypertension in Korean women

Background Hypertension （HTN） is a major determinant of various cardiovascular events. Plasma levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 （PAl-l） modulate this risk. A deletion/insertion polymorphism within the PAl-1 loci （4G/4G, 4G/5G, 5G/5G） affects the expression of this gene. The present study investigated the association between PAl-1 loci polymorphisms and HTN in Korean women. Methods Korean women （n=1312） were enrolled in this study to evaluate the association between PAl-1 4G/5G gene polymorphisms and HTN as well as other metabolic risk factors. PAl-1 loci polymorphisms were investigated using polymerase chain reaction amplification and single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis. Results The three genotype groups differed with respect to systolic blood pressure （P=0.043）, and diastolic blood pressure （P=0.009） but not with respect to age, body mass index, total cholesterol, low or high density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, or fasting blood glucose. Carriers of the PAl-1 4G allele had more hypertension significantly （PAl-1 4G/5G vs. PAl-1 5G/5G, P=0.032; PAl-1 4G/4G vs. PAl-1 5G/5G, P=0.034）. When stratified according to PAl-1 4G/5G polymorphism, there was no significant difference in all metabolic parameters among PAl-1 genotype groups in patients with HTN as well as subjects with normal blood pressure. The estimated odds ratio of the 4G/4G genotype and 4G/5G for HTN was 1.7 （P=0.005）, and 1.6 （P=0.015）, respectively. Conclusion These findings might indicate that PAl-1 loci polymorphisms independently contribute to HTN and that gene-environmental interaction may be not associated in Korean women.

Is Seeing Believing？A Critical Analysis of Japanese Colonial Photographs of Korea

In order to assess Roland Barthes＇ argument that interpretation of photography depends on cultural codes embeddedtherein, a collection of photos from the Japanese Government-General of Ch6sen （GGC）, which controlled Korea1910-1945, were examined. These colonial images and associated text, commonly in English, were aimed primarilyat the West, with which the Japanese sought alignment. Of the three common categories of GGC photos, ＂scientific＂or ＂anthropological＂ images corresponded with portrayals by Western colonial powers of the supposed inferiornature of subjugated peoples and cultures. Individuals in such pictures tend to lose their identities and are reducedto a stereotype, less human than the observer. ＂Before and after＂ photos depicted alleged GGC progress in suchareas as education and infrastructure. Pictures of ＂happy colonial subjects＂ conveyed an impression of Koreansenjoying the benevolence of the new administration. While this photojournalism favorably impressed someWesterners, others employed images of the 1919 Korean uprising, and its suppression, to discredit the *** overall assessment demonstrates the polemical manipulation of photography.

The Effect of <i>Prunella</i>on Anti-Inflammatory Activity in RAW264.7 Mouse Macrophage Cells

The extracts of Prunella vulgaris L. (Labiatae), a popular Western and Chinese herbal medicine, was shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which might be due to partially, their rosmarinic acid content. Inhition of prostaglandine E2 (PGE2) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated RAW264.7 mouse macrophage cells was assessed with an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) following 8-hour treatments with Prunella vulgaris extracts or fractions. Results showed that 95% ethanol extracts from P. vulgaris significantly inhibited PGE2 production. In further studies, fraction 2 from the 95% ethanol extract of P. vulgaris significantly reduced PGE2 production at 66 μg/ml (72% reduction). Cytotoxic-ity did not play a role in the noted reduction of PGE2 seen in either the extracts or fractions from P. vulgaris. High performance liquid chromatography analysis showed that there was 1.4 mM rosmarinic acid in 95% ethanol Prunella extract (201 mg/ml crude extract). Our results suggest that rosmarinic acid may contribute toward the anti-inflammatory activity of Prunella in a dose-response manner. Prunella might have a potential to be used as a functional food for anti-inflammatory activity.

Inverse design of a Si-based high-performance vertical-emitting meta-grating coupler on a220 nm silicon-on-insulator platform

Numerical Simulation for Two-Phase Water Hammer Flows in Pipe by Quasi-Two-Dimensional Model

The features of a quasi-two-dimensional( quasi-2D) model for simulating two-phase water hammer flows with vaporous cavity in a pipe are investigated. The quasi-2D model with discrete vaporous cavity in the pipe is proposed in this paper. This model uses the quasi-2D model for pure liquid zone and one-dimensional( 1D) discrete vapor cavity model for vaporous cavity zone. The quasi-2D model solves two-dimensional equations for both axial and radial velocities and 1D equations for both pressure head and discharge by the method of characteristics. The 1D discrete vapor cavity model is used to simulate the vaporous cavity occurred when the pressure in the local pipe is lower than the vapor pressure of the liquid. The proposed model is used to simulate two-phase water flows caused by the rapid downstream valve closure in a reservoir-pipe-valve *** results obtained by the proposed model are compared with those by the corresponding 1D model and the experimental ones provided by the literature,respectively. The comparison shows that the maximum pressure heads simulated by the proposed model are more accurate than those by the corresponding 1D model.

Sensitive Resource and Traffic Density Risk Analysis of Marine Spill Accidents Using Automated Identification System Big Data

This study developed a new methodology for analyzing the risk level of marine spill accidents from two perspectives,namely,marine traffic density and sensitive *** a case study conducted in Busan,South Korea,detailed procedures of the methodology were proposed and its scalability was *** analyze the risk from a more detailed and microscopic viewpoint,vessel routes as hazard sources were delineated on the basis of automated identification system(AIS)big *** outliers and errors of AIS big data were removed using the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise algorithm,and a marine traffic density map was evaluated by combining all of the gridded *** of marine environment was identified on the basis of the sensitive resource map constructed by the Korea Coast Guard in a similar manner to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration environmental sensitivity index *** this study,aquaculture sites,water intake facilities of power plants,and beach/resort areas were selected as representative indicators for each *** vulnerability values of neighboring cells decreased according to the Euclidean distance from the resource *** resulting maps were aggregated to construct a final sensitive resource and traffic density(SRTD)risk analysis map of the Busan–Ulsan sea *** confirmed the effectiveness of SRTD risk analysis by comparing it with the actual marine spill accident *** show that all of the marine spill accidents in 2018 occurred within 2 km of high-risk cells(level 6 and above).Thus,if accident management and monitoring capabilities are concentrated on high-risk cells,which account for only 6.45%of the total study area,then it is expected that it will be possible to cope with most marine spill accidents effectively.

BACKGROUND Ligamentum flavum cysts,which are most common in mobile junctional levels of the spine,can be a rare cause of spinal *** have been several case reports of ligamentum flavum ***,there is yet to be a documented case report of a calcified ligamentum flavum ***,we report the first case of a calcified ligamentum flavum cyst causing ankle and toe *** SUMMARY A 66-year-old male visited our hospital complaining of claudication as well as thigh and calf pain in his left leg,all beginning two weeks *** examination revealed motor weakness of the left ankle dorsiflexion and great toe *** spinal computed tomography scans showed spinal stenosis combined with a calcified mass at the left side of the L4-5 *** reso-nance imaging showed dural sac compression caused by the calcified mass at the left ligamentum flavum of the L4-5 *** performed decompressive laminectomy and excision of the calcified mass combined with posterior lumbar interbody fusion at the L4-5 ***-operatively,we found a firm and nodule like mass originating from the ventral surface of ligamentum *** examination suggested a calcified pseudocyst without a capsular *** the operation,the patient’s motor weakness in the ankle and great toe improved *** The patient’s ankle and great toe weakness were improved successfully after surgical removal of the calcified cyst.

Patchwise Mapping Method for Solving Elliptic Boundary Value Problems Containing Multiple Singularities

In the paper [1], the geometrical mapping techniques based on Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) were introduced to solve an elliptic boundary value problem containing a singularity. In the mapping techniques, the inverse function of the NURBS geometrical mapping generates singular functions as well as smooth functions by an unconventional choice of control points. It means that the push-forward of the NURBS geometrical mapping that generates singular functions, becomes a piecewise smooth function. However, the mapping method proposed is not able to catch singularities emerging at multiple locations in a domain. Thus, we design the geometrical mapping that generates singular functions for each singular zone in the physical domain. In the design of the geometrical mapping, we should consider the design of control points on the interface between/among patches so that global basis functions are in C0?space. Also, we modify the B-spline functions whose supports include the interface between/among them. We put the idea in practice by solving elliptic boundary value problems containing multiple singularities.

The Impacts of Nonnative Japanese Eelgrass (<i>Zostera japonica</i>) on Commercial Shellfish Production in Willapa Bay, WA

Eelgrass species worldwide are valued for the ecosystem service they provide to estuarine and marine habitats. One species, Zostera japonica, however, has some negative impacts outside its native range and is considered invasive. In Willapa Bay WA, USA, the nonnative eelgrass has expanded to the level where the shellfish industry is concerned about its potential impacts on its livelihood. Studies were conducted using paired plots, Z. japonica controlled with the herbicide imazamox vs. untreated controls, to assess the effects of Z. japonica on Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) and Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas). Recruitment of new Manila clams was not affected by Z. japonica. The growth of young clams, total commercial clam harvests, clam quality and clam harvest efficiency, however, were greater on plots where Z. japonica was chemically controlled than where it was not treated. The response of oysters to Z. japonica control varied by site;there was no effect at one site, while the other sites had a 15% increase in shucked meat with Z. japonica control. The potential economic impact of a Z. japonica infestation of a shellfish bed was ~$47,000 ha-1 for Manila clams and $4000 ha-1 for oysters for each crop harvest cycle.
