The effects of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents on human retinal pigment epithelial cells under high glucose conditions

AIM： To investigate the effects of high glucose levels and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor（VEGF） agents（bevacizumab,ranibizumab and aflibercept） on retinal pigment epithelium（RPE） ***： ARPE-19 cells were cultured at different glucose levels（5.5 mmol/L,25 mmol/L,and 75 mmol/L）.Cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay at 3d after treatment with *** migration ability was measured by wound healing assay at 3d.A cell death detection kit was used to assess apoptosis at 3 and 14 *** proliferation was assessed by EdU assay at *** culture medium was treated with anti-VEGF agents at clinically relevant *** experiment was then repeated at a different glucose ***： The viability and migration of ARPE-19 cells were significantly decreased in the presence of 75 mmol/L as compared to 5.5 mmol/L *** percentage of TUNEL-positive cells was significantly increased and the proliferative potential was decreased with 75 mmol/L compared to 5.5 mmol/L *** were no significant differences in the results between 25 mmol/L and 5.5 mmol/L *** the presence of 75 mmol/L glucose,the groups treated with anti-VEGF showed decreased cell viability and proliferation and increased ***,there were no significant differences between the anti-VEGF ***： High glucose level decreases the viability,wound healing ability,and proliferation of RPE cells,while increasing ***,anti-VEGF agents interfered with the physiological functions of RPE cells under high-glucose conditions,accompanied by decreases in cell viability and proliferation.

Prominent cycling reversibility and kinetics enabled by CaTiO3 protective layer on Zn metal for aqueous Zn-ion batteries

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries （AZIBs） have received considerable attention owing to their various advantages such as safety,low cost,simple battery assembly conditions,and high ionic ***,they still suffer from serious problems,including uncontrollable dendrite growth,corrosion,hydrogen evolution reaction （HER） from water decomposition,electrode passivation,and unexpected *** creation of a uniform artificial nanocrystal layer on the Zn anode surface is a promising strategy for resolving these ***,we propose the use of a perovskite CaTiO3（CTO） protective layer on Zn（CTO@Zn） as a promising approach for improving the performance of *** CTO artificial layer provides an efficient pathway for Zn ion diffusion towards the Zn metal because of the high dielectric constant （εr=180） and ferroelectric characteristics that enable the alignment of dipole moments and redistribute the Zn2+ions in the CTO *** avoiding the direct contact of the Zn anode with the electrolyte solution,the uneven dendrite growth,corrosion,parasitic side reactions,and HER are mitigated,while CTO retains its mechanical and chemical robustness during ***,CTO@Zn demonstrates an improved lifespan in a symmetric cell configuration compared with bare ***@Zn shows steady overpotential （～68 m V） for 1500 h at 1 mA cm-2/0.5 mA h cm-2,excelling bare ***,when paired with the V2O5-C cathode,the CTO@Zn//V2O5-C full battery delivers 148.4 mA h g-1（based on the mass of the cathode） after 300 *** study provides new insights into Zn metal anodes and the development of high-performance AZIBs.

Effects of design parameters and tension on behavior of a coil using finite element analysis

During the thin strip coiling process, it is necessary to use a sleeve with a mandrel to prevent excessive deformation of the strip. Stress distribution in the sleeve and in the strip is an important factor that determines the quality of the coil. However, owing to the accumulation of high pressure, it is difficult to determine the stress distribution through experimentation. Thus, stress analysis of the strip coiling process was conducted. Finite element analysis was used to investigate the effects of the weight of the strip and the mandrel on the stress distribution and stress concentration near the starting point of the coil. The radial stress was predicted for a coil with a stacked thickness of 384 mm, which corresponds to a strip length of 1486 m, using the stress analysis model developed in a preceding research. A method was presented to reduce the weight and radial stress of a strip coil. It was found that the deformation of the sleeve can be reduced by decreasing the gap between the mandrel segments. The thickness of the sleeve can be reduced from 120 to 106 mm using the stress analysis results. Furthermore, coiling tension can be reduced by 44% compared to the existing value considering the interlayer slip of the strip coil.

Therapeutic effect of acupuncture point injection with placental extract in knee osteoarthritis

OBJECTIVE： This study evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture point injection （API） with placenta extract on pain reduction and joint function in patients with knee osteoarthritis （OA）. METHODS： Fifty-two patients with knee OA, with an average age of 64, and having a symptom duration of more than 3 months were studied in this report. Placental extract was injected weekly into acupuncture point ST35, BL23, BL24 and BL25 for 5 weeks; 8 mL of placental extract into ST35 on the affected side, and 1 mL of placental extract to BL23, BL24 and BL25 bilaterally. RESULTS： After a five-week treatment of API with placental extract, pain was substantially decreased in patients of all Kellgren-Lawrence （KL） grades. Improvement of knee joint swelling was also apparent Decrease of pain and joint swelling improved daily working productive time among patients of all KL grades. CONCLUSION： Study results imply that API with placental extract is a potentially useful therapy to control pain and maintain joint functions in knee OA patients.

Guidance on the Choice of Threshold for Binary Forecast Modeling

This paper proposes useful guidance on the choice of threshold for binary forecasts. In weather forecast systems, the probabilistic forecast cannot be used directly when estimated too smoothly. In this case, the binary forecast, whether a meteorological event will occur or not, is preferable to the probabilistic forecast. A threshold is needed to generate a binary forecast, and the guidance in this paper encompasses the use of skill scores for the choice of threshold according to the forecast pattern. The forecast pattern consists of distribution modes of estimated probabilities, occurrence rates of observations, and variation modes. This study is performed via Monte-Carlo simulation, with 48 forecast patterns considered. Estimated probabilities are generated by random variate sampling from five distributions separately. Varying the threshold from 0 to 1, binary forecasts are generated by threshold. For the assessment of binary forecast models, a 2×2 contingency table is used and four skill scores （Heidke skill score, hit rate, true skill statistic, and threat score） are compared for each forecast pattern. As a result, guidance on the choice of skill score to find the optimal threshold is proposed.

Wearable Triboelectric Nanogenerators Based on Printed Polyvinylidene Fluoride Films Incorporated with Cobalt-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Self-Powered Mobile Electronics

In this study,wearable triboelectric nanogenerators comprising bar-printed polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)films incorporated with cobalt-based metal-organic framework(Co-MOF)were *** enhanced output performance of the TENGs was attributed to the phase transition of PVDF from a-crystals toβ-crystals,as facilitated by the incorporation of the *** synthesis conditions,including metal ion,concentration,and particle size of the MOF,were optimized to increase open-circuit voltage(VOC)and open-circuit current(I_(SC))of PVDF-based *** addition to high operational stability,mechanical robustness,and long-term reliability,the developed TENG consisting of PVDF incorporated with Co-MOF(Co-MOF@PVDF)achieved a VOC of 194 V and an I_(SC)of 18.8μ***,the feasibility of self-powered mobile electronics was demonstrated by integrating the developed wearable TENG with rectifier and control units to power a global positioning system(GPS)*** local position of the user in real-time through GPS was displayed on a mobile interface,powered by the battery charged through friction-induced electricity generation.

Electrochemically metal-doped reduced graphene oxide films:Properties and applications

The fine control of doping levels in graphene materials such as reduced graphene oxide(RGO)is important to properly manipulate their ambipolar transport characteristics for various device ***,conventional doping methods involve complex chemical reactions,large-scale doping processes,and poor ***,a simple and controllable electrochemical doping treatment(EDT),performed via the conductive channels created at the RGO surface by the application of an electric field,is introduced to tailor the electrical properties of RGO films.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy measurements are performed to detect the presence of Ni atoms in RGO films after the EDT(EDT-RGO).Then,EDT-RGO field-effect transistors(FETs)are fabricated with different doping areas(0 to 100%fractional area)on the RGO active channel to investigate the effect and selective-area doping capability of the *** to p-type doping compensation by the intercalated Ni atoms,the electron mobility of the EDT-RGO FET decreases from 1.40 to 0.12 cm2 V-1s-1 compared with that of the undoped RGO-FET,leading to the conversion from ambipolar to unipolar p-type transfer characteristics.

Lithium–sulfur batteries(LSBs)are regarded as promising candidates for the next-generation energy storage devices owing to their high-theoretical capacity(1675 mAh g^(−1))and affordable ***,several limitations of LSBs such as the lithium polysulfide shuttle,large volume expansion,and low electrical conductivity of sulfur need to be resolved for practical *** address these limitations,herein,a multidimensional architectured hybrid(Co@CNT/nG),where Co_(3)O_(4) nanoparticles are encapsulated into threedimensional(3D)porous N-doped reduced graphene oxide interconnected with carbon nanotube(CNT)branches,is synthesized through a simple pyrolysis *** synergistic effect achieved through the homogeneously distributed and encapsulated Co_(3)O_(4) nanoparticles,the interconnected CNT branches,and the 3D hierarchical porous structure and N-doping of Co@CNT/nG significantly suppresses the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and enhances the conversion redox kinetics for the improved sulfur *** validate this effect through various measurements including symmetric cells,Li_(2)S nucleation,shuttle currents,Tafel slopes,diffusion coefficients,and post-mortem ***,Co@CNT/nG-70S-based LSB cells achieve a high-specific capacity of 1193.1 mAh g^(−1) at 0.1 C and a low capacity decay rate of 0.030%per cycle for 700 cycles at 5 C,delivering a high areal capacity of 5.62 mAh cm^(−2) even with a loading of 6.5 mg cm^(−2).
