Forecasting of Asian dust storm that occurred on May 10-13, 2011, using an ensemble-based data assimilation system

An ensemble-based assimilation system that used the MASINGAR ink-2 （Model of Aerosol Species IN the Global AtmospheRe Mark 2） dust forecasting model and satellite-derived aerosol optical thickness （AOt） data. processed in the JAXA （Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency） Satellite Monitoring for Environmental Studies （JASMES） system with MODIS （Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer） observations. was used to quantify the impact of assimilation on forecasts of a severe Asian dust storm during May 10-13. 2011. the modeled bidirectional reflectance function and observed vegetation index employed in JASMES enable AOt retrievals in areas of high surface reflectance, making JASMES effective for dust forecasting and early warning by enabling assimilations in dust storm source regions. Forecasts both with and without assimilation were validated using PM^0 observations from China, Korea, and Japan in the tEMM WG1 dataset. Only the forecast with assimilation successfully captured the contrast between the core and tail of the dust storm by increasing the AOt around the core by 70-150% and decreasing it around the tail by 20-30% in the 18-h forecast. the forecast with assimilation improved the agreement with observed PMlo concentrations, but the effect was limited at downwind sites in Korea and Japan because of the lack of observational constraints for a mis-forecasted dust storm due to cloud.

Surgical removal of a large mobile left ventricular thrombus via left atriotomy

Left ventricular(LV) thrombus is a life-threatening complication of severe LV dysfunction. Ventriculotomy has been a commonly performed procedure for LV thrombus; however, it often further decrease LV function after surgery. We present an alternative approach to thrombectomy in order to minimize the postoperative LV dysfunction. A 37-year-old female with a postpartum cardiomyopathy found to have poor LV function and a large left ventricular apical thrombus(3 cm × 3 cm) attached to the apex by a narrow stalk. Given her severe LV dysfunction, the LV thrombus was approached via left atriotomy under cardiopulmonary bypass. the LV thrombus was easily extracted with gentle traction via the mitral valve. Postoperatively, the patient was discharged home without any embolization event or inotropic support. LV thrombectomy via left atriotomy through the mitral valve could be an alternative option for the patients with poor LV function with a mobile LV thrombus.

Experiments on formation of spherical tokamak (St) plasmas by electroncyclotron heating (ECH) alone without a central OH solenoid have been carried out on LAtE (LowAspect ratio torus Experiments). By injecting a 2.45 GHz microwave pulse of 6.3 kW for 4 seconds, aplasma current is initiated and ramped up to I_p approx= 3 kA, and finally maintained for 1 secondby adjusting the external vertical field. Magnetic measurements show that closed flux surfaces areformed and the last closed flux surface has an aspect ratio of A ～ 1.3 and an elongation of κ～1.3. the electron density measured by an interferometer is more than 1.5 x 10^(11) cm^(-3) whichexceeds twice of the plasma cut-off density, suggesting that electron cyclotron heating bymode-converted electron Bernstein waves may take place.

DEtERMINAtION OF SOME PARAMEtERS OF CRACK BASED ON FRAStA SIMULAtION

A new method, using the fracture-surface topography analysis （FRAStA）, of determining the parameters of rotation factor and CtOA is provided. the fracture surfaces are scanned by laser microscope and the height data is recorded to analyze. By comparing the crack extension, plastic rotation factor and COA obtained by the method of double clip gauge and by this new method respectively, the validity of it is verified. It is then used to determine the CtOA. .the critical CtOA is well determined in this paper. Also by the new method, the variation of crack opening deformation （COA and CtOA） through specimen thickness can be obtained which can＇t be obtained by the usual methods. It also can provide much information of crack extension such as direction and ratio.

Plasma Boundary Position Measurements Using Frequency Sweep Microwave Reflectometer in LHD

A broadband frequency tunable microwave reflectometer system, which has the abil- ity of fast and stable frequency sweeping operation, is applied in the large helical device （LHD） to measure the boundary of the high-temperature plasma. When the microwave is launched, with extraordinary polarization, from the low field side of the magnetic field with its frequency swept from low to high, the microwave of minimum right-hand cut-off frequency is reflected most out- side. We can then estimate the plasma boundary position by measuring the change of the reflected power from the cut-off layer.

Stabilization of a high-order harmonic generation seeded extreme ultraviolet free electron laser by time-synchronization control with electro-optic sampling

A fully coherent free electron laser(FEL) seeded with a higher-order harmonic(HH) pulse from high-order harmonic generation(HHG) is successfully operated for a sufficiently prolonged time in pilot user experiments by using a timing drift feedback. For HHG-seeded FELs, the seeding laser pulses have to be synchronized with electron bunches. Despite seeded FELs being non-chaotic light sources in principle, external laser-seeded FELs are often unstable in practice because of a timing jitter and a drift between the seeding laser pulses and the accelerated electron bunches. Accordingly,we constructed a relative arrival-timing monitor based on non-invasive electro-optic sampling(EOS). the EOS monitor made uninterrupted shot-to-shot monitoring possible even during the seeded FEL operation. the EOS system was then used for arrival-timing feedback with an adjustability of 100 fs for continual operation of the HHG-seeded FEL. Using the EOS-based beam drift controlling system, the HHG-seeded FEL was operated over half a day with an effective hit rate of 20%–30%. the output pulse energy was 20 μJ at the 61.2 nm wavelength. towards seeded FELs in the water window region, we investigated our upgrade plan to seed high-power FELs with HH photon energy of 30–100 e V and lase at shorter wavelengths of up to 2 nm through high-gain harmonic generation(HGHG) at the energy-upgraded SPring-8Compact SASE Source(SCSS) accelerator. We studied a benefit as well as the feasibility of the next HHG-seeded FEL machine with single-stage HGHG with tunability of a lasing wavelength.

Novel wide band gap alloyed semiconductors, x(LiGaO_2)_(1/2)-(1-x)ZnO, and fabrication of their thin films

Oxide semiconductor alloys of x(LiGaO2)1/2-(1−x)ZnO were fabricated by the solid state reaction between β-LiGaO2 and ZnO and rf-magnetron sputtering. For the solid state reaction, the wurtzite-type single phases were obtained in the composition range of x⩽0.38. the formation range of the alloys was wider than that of the (Mg1−x Zn x )O system, because the β-LiGaO2 possesses a wurtzite-derived structure and approximately the same lattice constants with ZnO. the electrical resistivity and energy band gap of the 0.38(LiGaO2)1/2-0.62ZnO alloyed ceramic were 0.45 Ωcm and 3.7 eV, respectively, at room temperature. For the alloying by sputtering, the films consisting of the wurtzite-type single phase were obtained over the entire composition range of x(LiGaO2)1/2-(1−x)ZnO. the energy band gap was controllable in the range from 3.3 to 5.6 eV. For the as-deposited film fabricated using the 0.4(LiGaO2)1/2-0.6ZnO alloyed ceramic target, the energy band gap was 3.74 eV, and the electrical resistivity, carrier density and the Hall mobility at room temperature were 3.6 Ωcm, 3.4×1017 cm−3 and 5.6 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively.

Analysis Scheme for Density Modulation Experiments to Study Particle Confinements

Density modulation experiments are powerful experimental schemes for the study of particle transport. the diffusion coefficients （D） and convection velocity （V）, which cannot be evaluated from the particle balance in the equilibrium state, can be obtained separately. Further, the estimated values of D and V are determined independent of the absolute value of the particle source rate, which is difficult to obtain experimentally. However, the sensitivities and interpretation of D and V from the modulation experiments need to be considered. this paper describes numerical techniques for solving the particle balance equation of the modulation components. Examples of the analysis are shown regarding the data of LHD experiments, and the results of the modulation experiments are discussed.
