two-proton relative momentum distributions from the break-up channels 23Al→p+p+21Na and 22Mg→p+p+20Ne at an energy of 60-70 A MeV have been measured together with two-proton opening angles at the projectile fragment separator beamline (RIPS) in the RIKEN Ring Cyclotron Facility. the results demonstrate the existence of diproton emission component from single-step 2He for highly excited 23Al and 22Mg.

to realize an excitation of electron Bernstein waves （EBW） via mode conversion from X-mode waves injected from the high magnetic field side （HFS）, new inner-vessel mirrors were installed close to a helicM coil in the large helicM device （LHD）. 77 GHz electron cyclotron （EC） wave beams injected from an existing EC-wave injection system toward the new mirror are reflected on the mirror so that the beams are injected to plasmas from HFS. Evident increases in the electron temperature at the plasma core region and the plasma stored energy were observed by the HFS beam injection to the plasmas with the line-average electron density of 7.5~ 1019 m-3, which is slightly higher than the plasma cut-off density of 77 GHz EC-waves, 7.35~ 1019 m-3. the heating efficiency evaluated from the changes in the time derivative of the plasma stored energy reached ,,~70%. Although so far it is not clear which is the main cause of the heating effect, the mode-converted EBW or the X-mode wave itself injected from the HFS, an effective heating of high-density plasma over the plasma cut-off of EC-wave was successfully demonstrated.

Afforestation in arid land is a promising method for carbon fixation, but the effective utili- zation of water is highly important and required. thus, the evaluation of the amount of water per unit carbon fixed with the tree growth is required to minimize the amount of water supplied to the plants. In this research, a tree is regarded as a carbon fixation reactor with inflows of water and nutrients from roots, and CO_2 as the carbon source from leaves with outflow of water vapor from leaves and accumulation in the tree itself. In the process of photosynthesis and respiration nutri- tional elements are dissolved in water flow in trees. they do not flow out by these reactions, but are accumulated in trees. thus, we have treated the behaviour of nutrients as a marker to evaluate the water/carbon ratio. Assuming that nutrient concentration is constant in sap, and the differences in the ratios of nutrient to carbon in living trees and dead (i.e. litter fall, etc.) are neglected, the ratio of the used water to fixed carbon is given as the ratio of nutrient to carbon in the tree body divided by the ratio of nutrient to water in sap. However, some nutrients are translocated and concentrated within the tree and some may be discarded through litter fall. thus it is important to examine which nutrient element is the most suitable as the tracer. In this paper, the results of the above method applied to Eucalyptus camaldulensis in semi- arid land of Western Australia are shown. the value of water requirement per unit carbon fixation determined from potassium balance is between 421 kg-H_2O/kg-C for mature trees and 285 kg-H_2O/kg-C for young trees, while the values from calcium balance are much larger than these. the cause of the discrepancy between these values is discussed based on the measured element concentrations in sap and trees and the plant physiology. Finally, the actual average value through the life of a tree is suggested to fall between the two values.

Our preliminary results on two-dimensional （2D） optical tomographic imaging of hemodynamic changes in a preterm infant brain are reported. We use the established 16-channel time-correlated single photon counting system for the detection and generalized pulse spectrum technique based algorithm for the image reconstruction. the experiments demonstrate that diffuse optical tomography may be a potent means for investigating brain functions and neural development of infant brains in the perinatal period.

Vanadium alloys are considered as the promising first wall and structure materials of the future fusion reactors owing to their perfect low neutron-induced radioactivity and good high temperature performance. Helium retention and thermal desorption behaviors are key issues for the applications of vanadium alloys in fusion reactors since helium can be produced by helium discharge cleaning and neutron transmutation. A. van Veen groupt investigated helium trapping and thermal desorption mechanisms in vanadium alloys by using 1 keV helium ion irradiation to the fluence of 10^13～10^14He/cm^2, and the influenee of pre-annealing treatments on helium trapping. two group of peaks were found at the thermal helium desorption spectrum. they thought one was due to helium-vacancyimpurity clusters and the other was corresponding to helium trapping into pre-existing traps, such as fine-size precipitates.

Plastic behaviour of tiAl polysynthetically twinned (PSt) crystals is reviewed to show our knowledge and understanding for receiving a good combination of strength and ductility of two phase tiAl alloys under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions. Anisotropy and mechanism of strength, ductility, toughness. cyclic hardening and fatigue life are described focusing on the effect of lamellar structure.

this study addresses the hypothesis that stagnation of soybean yield on the farm can be improved by selection of a physiological trait favoring carbon assimilate partitioning to terminally placed pods versus genotypes having axillary pods at close plant spacing.13C was fed to source-sink units comprising a leaf,axillary/terminal pods,and petioles at upper and lower positions of the stem axis in two soybean cultivars,namely Shakujo and Enrei,at different densities of *** cultivars differ significantly in architecture,Shakujo bearing a few hundreds of pods in close succession to one another in a terminally placed raceme,in contrast to Enrei having axillary *** yield per plant was higher in Enrei than in Shakujo at low density,but Shakujo out-yielded Enrei at close *** density decreased yield per plant and altered the pattern of assimilate partitioning significantly within the plants for both *** high density more assimilates moved to the upper parts at the cost of the lower *** terminally placed pods of Shakujo were advantaged to receive assimilates under density *** benefit was accrued to pod filling of Enrei,however,under this condition.

Global and Kinetic MHD Simulation by the Gpic-MHD Code

In order to implement large-scale and high-beta tokamak simulation, a new algorithm of the electromagnetic gyrokinetic PIC （particle-in-cell） code was proposed and installed on the Gpic-MHD code [Gyrokinetic PIC code for magnetohydrodynamic （MHD） simulation]. In the new algorithm, the vorticity equation and the generalized Ohm＇s law along the magnetic field are derived from the basic equations of the gyrokinetic Vlasov, Poisson, and Ampere system and are used to describe the spatio-temporal evolution of the field quantities of the electrostatic potential φ and the longitudinal component of the vector potential Az. the basic algorithm is equivalent to solving the reduced-MHD-type equations with kinetic corrections, in which MHD physics related to Alfven modes are well described. the estimation of perturbed electron pressure from particle dynamics is dominant, while the effects of other moments are negligible. Another advantage of the algorithm is that the longitudinal induced electric field, Etz = -δAz/δt, is explicitly estimated by the generalized Ohm＇s law and used in the equations of motion. Furthermore, the particle velocities along the magnetic field are used （vz-formulation） instead of generalized momentums （pz-formulation）, hence there is no problem of ＇cancellation＇, which would otherwise appear when Az is estimated from the Ampere＇s law in the pz-formulation. the successful simulation of the collisionless internal kink mode by the new Gpic-MHD with realistic values of the large-scale and high-beta tokamaks revealed the usefulness of the new algorithm.

Excited states of125Sb have been studied using in-beam γ spectroscopy techniques via the124Sn(7Li, α2n) reaction at a beam energy of 32 MeV. A high-spin level scheme including 21 new γ-transitions and 14 new excited states have been established. three isomers have been identified at 1970, 2110 and 2471 keV and the ranges of their half-lives have been estimated from the delayed coincidence data. the level structure of125Sb is discussed in terms of particle-core excitation coupling. With the help of empirical shell model calculations the three isomers are proposed to have three-quasiparticle πg7/2?v(h 11/2 s 1/2)5?, πg7/2?v(h 11/2 d 3/2)7? and πg7/2?v(h 11 2/2 )10 + configurations, respectively.
