An ensemble-based assimilation sy.tem that used the MASINGAR ink-2 （Model of Aerosol Species IN the Global AtmospheRe Mark 2） dust forecasting model and satellite-derived aerosol optical thickness （AOt） data. processed in the JAXA （Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. Satellite Monitoring for Environmental Studies （JASMES） sy.tem with MODIS （Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer） observations. was used to quantify.the impact of assimilation on forecasts of a severe Asian dust storm during May.10-13. 2011. the modeled bidirectional reflectance function and observed vegetation index employ.d in JASMES enable AOt retrievals in areas of high surface reflectance, making JASMES effective for dust forecasting and early.warning by.enabling assimilations in dust storm source regions. Forecasts both with and without assimilation were validated using PM^0 observations from China, Korea, and Japan in the tEMM WG1 dataset. Only.the forecast with assimilation successfully.captured the contrast between the core and tail of the dust storm by.increasing the AOt around the core by.70-150% and decreasing it around the tail by.20-30% in the 18-h forecast. the forecast with assimilation improved the agreement with observed PMlo concentrations, but the effect was limited at downwind sites in Korea and Japan because of the lack of observational constraints for a mis-forecasted dust storm due to cloud.

Performance assessment of innovative seismic resilient steel knee braced frame

Buckling restrained knee braced truss moment frame （BRKBtMF） is a novel and innovative steel structural sy.tem that utilizes the advantages of long-span trusses and dedicated structural fuses for seismic applications. Steel trusses are very.economical and effective in spanning large distance. However, conventional steel trusses are ty.ically.not suitable for seismic application, due to its lack of ductility.and poor energy.dissipation capacity. BRKBtMF utilizes buckling restrained braces （BRBs） as the designated structural fuses to dissipate the sudden surge of earthquake energy. this allows the BRKBtMF to economically.and efficiently.create large span structural sy.tems for seismic applications. In this paper, a prototy.e BRKBtMF office building located in Berkeley. California, USA, was designed using performance-based plastic design procedure. the seismic performance of the prototy.e building was assessed using the state-of-the-art finite element software, OpenSees. Detailed BRB hy.teresis and advanced element removal technique was implemented. the modeling approach allows the simulation for the force-deformation response of the BRB and the force redistribution within the sy.tem after the BRBs fracture. the developed finite element model was analy.ed using incremental dy.amic analy.is approach to quantify.the seismic performance of BRKBtMF. the results show BRKBtMF has excellent seismic performance with well controlled structural responses and resistance against collapse. In addition, life cy.le repair cost of BRKBtMF was assessed using the next-generation performance-based earthquake engineering framework. the results confirm that BRKBtMF can effectively.control the structural and non-structural component damages and minimize the repair costs of the structure under different ranges of earthquake shaking intensities. this studies conclude that BRKBtMF is a viable and effective seismic force resisting sy.tem.

Closed-form solutions for free vibration of rectangular FGM thin plates resting on elastic foundation

this article presents closed-form solutions for the frequency.analy.is of rectangular functionally.graded material (FGM) thin plates subjected to initially.in-plane loads and with an elastic foundation. Based on classical thin plate theory. the governing differential equations are derived using Hamilton's principle. A neutral surface is used to eliminate stretching-bending coupling in FGM plates on the basis of the assumption of constant Poisson's ratio. the resulting governing equation of FGM thin plates has the same form as homogeneous thin plates. the separation-of-variables method is adopted to obtain solutions for the free vibration problems of rectangular FGM thin plates with separable boundary.conditions, including, for example, clamped plates. the obtained normal modes and frequencies are in elegant closed forms, and present formulations and solutions are validated by.comparing present results with those in the literature and finite element method results obtained by.the authors. A parameter study.reveals the effects of the power law index n and aspect ratio a/b on frequencies.

Effect of ultrasonic stirring on temperature distribution and grain refinement in Al-1.65%Si alloy.melt

A series of experiments were conducted for Al-1.65%Si (mass fraction) alloy.melt to study.the formation of grain refining structure with ultrasonic stirring. the cooling curves of ingots with ultrasonic were measured and compared with those without ultrasonic. At the same time, the effect of the time of ultrasonic stirring on solidification structure of ingots was investigated. the influence of ultrasonic on the grain-refining efficiency.of ingots was analy.ed. In order to well understand the melts behavior under ultrasonic, by.using ammonium chloride solution, the simulation experiment was carried out and the temperature distribution in ingot with or without ultrasonic was compared. the results indicate that the ultrasonic reduces the temperature inhomogeneity.of melt, i.e. the ultrasonic helps to homogenize the melt temperature. the effect of stirring and heat generation in ingot start to occur with increasing the time of ultrasonic stirring.

Effect of Duct Geometry.on Shock Wave Discharge

this paper describes computational work to understand the unsteady.flow-field of a shock wave discharging from an exit of a duct and impinging upon a flat plate. A flat plate is located downstream, and normal to the axis of the duct. the distance between the exit of the duct and flat plate is changed. In the present study. two different duct geometries （i.e., square and cross section） are simulated to investigate the effect of duct geometry.on the un-steady.flows of a shock wave. In computation, the total variation diminishing （tVD） scheme is employ.d to solve three-dimensional, unsteady. compressible, Euler equations. Computations are performed over the range of shock Mach number from 1.05 to 1.75. Computational results can predict the three-dimensional dy.amic behaviour of the shock wave impinging upon the flat plate. the results obtained show that the pressure increase generated on the plate by.the shock impingement depends on the duct geometry.and the distance between the duct exit and plate, as well as the shock Mach number. It is also found that for the duct with cross-section, the unsteady.loads acting on the flat plate are less, compared with the square duct.

PREPARAtION OF IODINE-INCLUDED CARBON USING RF PLASMA CVD

For the aim of sy.thesis of the carbon-iodine compound, the preparation of iodin e-included carbon using RF plasma CVD was studied. Iodine-included carbon was sy.nthesized on Si substrate using ICP ty.e RF plasma CVD apparatus. C2H5OH and I2 dissolved C2H5OH was used as reactant gases. As a result, surface morphologies o f Iodine included carbon films showed flat surfaces for each samples. On the str ucture of films estimated by.Raman spectroscopy. amorphous carbon was recognized . And I2 peaks were observed in XPS spectra. As a result of friction test, frict ion coefficient of the sample growth with C2H5OH showed about 0.45. On the other hand, that of the sample with I2-C2H5OH showed about 0.3 and decrease of fricti on coefficient was recognized. Iodine inclusion for carbon materials can be achi eved by.RF plasma CVD using an I2-C2H5OH reactant. the coefficient of iodine-inc luded carbon showed lower than of without iodine

Features of Rotating Stall Cell in a Diagonal Flow Fan (in Case of Mid-loading Rotor)

the structure and behavior of rotating stall cell were experimentally.clarified in a diagonal flow fan. the specific-speed of the fan was 1140 （r/min, m^3/min, m）, and the total pressure-rise coefficient at design flow-rate was 0.345. the static pressure on outer casing wall and the total pressure at rotor inlet and outlet were measured using a high response pressure transducer. the measured data were processed by.the use of DPLA technique, and the structure and behavior of rotating stall cell were obtained. As a result, the stall cell extent for circumferential and spanwise direction and the pressure distributions inside stall cell were clarified. the details of stall cell propagation were also shown.

this paper reviews the theoretical foundations of zonal flow, putting emphasis on the linear response function of plasma to the external flow drive. An extension of the theory.is made in order to apply.it to helical sy.tems and to study.the properties of the zonal flow in the low frequency.range. Further refinement of the theory.is made incorporating the orbital effects of particles more precisely. and the role of neoclassical polarization current is identified.

Estimation of water requirement per unit carbon fixed by.Eucaly.tus camaldulensis in semi-arid land of Western Australia

Afforestation in arid land is a promising method for carbon fixation, but the effective utili- zation of water is highly.important and required. thus, the evaluation of the amount of water per unit carbon fixed with the tree growth is required to minimize the amount of water supplied to the plants. In this research, a tree is regarded as a carbon fixation reactor with inflows of water and nutrients from roots, and CO_2 as the carbon source from leaves with outflow of water vapor from leaves and accumulation in the tree itself. In the process of photosy.thesis and respiration nutri- tional elements are dissolved in water flow in trees. they.do not flow out by.these reactions, but are accumulated in trees. thus, we have treated the behaviour of nutrients as a marker to evaluate the water/carbon ratio. Assuming that nutrient concentration is constant in sap, and the differences in the ratios of nutrient to carbon in living trees and dead (i.e. litter fall, etc.) are neglected, the ratio of the used water to fixed carbon is given as the ratio of nutrient to carbon in the tree body.divided by.the ratio of nutrient to water in sap. However, some nutrients are translocated and concentrated within the tree and some may.be discarded through litter fall. thus it is important to examine which nutrient element is the most suitable as the tracer. In this paper, the results of the above method applied to Eucaly.tus camaldulensis in semi- arid land of Western Australia are shown. the value of water requirement per unit carbon fixation determined from potassium balance is between 421 kg-H_2O/kg-C for mature trees and 285 kg-H_2O/kg-C for y.ung trees, while the values from calcium balance are much larger than these. the cause of the discrepancy.between these values is discussed based on the measured element concentrations in sap and trees and the plant phy.iology. Finally. the actual average value through the life of a tree is suggested to fall between the two values.

Effect of Bismuth on Intermetallic Compound Growth in Lead Free Solder/Cu Microelectronic Interconnect

the intermetallic compound （IMC） growth kinetics in pure Sn/Cu and Sn10 wt%Bi/Cu solder joints was studied, respectively. after they.were aged at 160-210℃ for different time. It was found that the total IMC in Sn10 wt%Bi/Cu joint developed faster than it did in pure Sn/Cu solder joint, when they.were aged at the same temperature. And the activation energy.Qa for total IMC in Sn10 wt%Bi/Cu joint was lower than that for pure Sn/Cu interconnect. the IMC growth process was discussed. the IMC Cu6Sn5 was enhanced in compensation of reduced IMC Cu3Sn growth. the work reveals that Bi element containing in lead free solder alloy. with 10 wt% can enhance IMC growth in lead free solder/Cu joint during service.
