Background: In mid-2022, a global mpox (formerly 'monkeypox') outbreak affecting predominantly gay and bisexual men emerged in non-endemic countries. Australia had never previously recorded mpox cases and there was no prior research on knowledge or attitudes to mpox among gay and bisexual men across Australia. Methods: We conducted a national, online cross-sectional survey between August 2022 and September 2022. Participants were recruited through community organisation promotions, online advertising, and direct email invitations. Eligible participants were gay, bisexual or queer; identified as male (cisgender or transgender) or non-binary; aged 16 years or older; and lived in Australia. the main outcome measures were: knowledge and concern about mpox; recognition of mpox symptoms and transmission routes; vaccination history; acceptability of behavioural changes to reduce mpox risk, and willingness to be vaccinated. Results: Of 2287 participants, most participants were male (2189/2287; 95.7%) and gay (1894/2287; 82.8%). Nearly all had heard about mpox (2255/2287; 98.6%), and the majority were concerned about acquiring it (1461/2287; 64.4%). Most of the 2268 participants not previously diagnosed with mpox correctly identified skin lesions (2087; 92%), rash (1977; 87.2%), and fever (1647; 72.6%) as potential symptoms, and prolonged and brief skin-to-skin contact as potential ways to acquire mpox (2124, 93.7%; and 1860, 82%, respectively). the most acceptable behavioural changes were reducing or avoiding attendance at sex parties (1494; 65.9%) and sex-on-premises venues (1503; 66.4%), and having fewer sexual partners (1466; 64.6%). Most unvaccinated and undiagnosed participants were willing to be vaccinated (1457/1733; 84.1%). Conclusions: People at risk of mpox should be supported to adopt acceptable risk reduction strategies during outbreaks and to seek vaccination. © 2023 CSIRO. All rights reserved.

Approaches to efficiency in manufacturing and assem bl y over the past 100 years have concentrated frequently on the twin themes of div iding jobs done by people into defined segments and to automating as many of tho se segments as possible. this approach to manufacturing engineering may be char acterised as one of deconstruction and replacement so far as the role of the hum an being is concerned. More recently design engineering has been approached in a similar light with research into ’intelligent’ methods involving, for example, expert systems or genetic algorithms to handle an increasing proportion of desi gn tasks. Expert systems are predicated on the idea that it is possible to capture and systemise significant amounts of professional knowledge: a task that has proved with experience to be much more difficult than when such systems wer e first proposed. Genetic algorithms, notwithstanding considerable research eff ort, have yet to make significant inroads into the practise of design and manufa cture. this paper will draw on new and previous experimental work carried out with supp ort from industry to propose an alternative approach that is enabled by the prod ucts of modern information technology. In this paradigm it is recognised that t he involvement of the human design expert is, for the time being at least, inevi table. We have delivered viral vectors containing either Chop2 fused with GFP, Channelrhodopsin-2 （ChR2）, or Halorhodopsin （HaloR） fused with mCherry （to form light gated cation channels or chloride pumps, respectively）, into the dorsal cochlear nucleus （DCN）. One to eighteen months later we examined the CN and inferior colliculus （IC） for evidence of virally transfected cells and processes. Production of ChR2 and HaloR was observed throughout the DCN. Rhodopsin localization within neurons was determined, with elongate, fusiform and giant cells identified based on morphology and location within the DCN. Production of ChR2 and HaloR was found at both the injection site as well as in regions projecting to and from the DCN. Light driven neuronal activity in the DCN was dependent upon the wavelength and intensity of the light, with only the appropriate wavelength resulting in activation and higher intensity light resulting in more neuronal activity. transfecting cells via viral delivery of rhodopsins can be useful as a tract tracer and as a neuronal marker to delineate pathways. In the future rhodopsin delivery and activation may be developed as an alternative to electrical stimulation of neurons.

Background:the aggregation of amyloidβ(Aβ)is central in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease(AD).Recently it has been shown that specifically,larger,thioflavin t-binding Aβaggregates are associated with increased neuroinflammation and cytokine *** study was aimed to quantify fibrillary amyloid aggregates,so-called nanoplaques,and investigate their relationship with cytokines in the cerebrospinal fluid(CSF).Methods:CSF was collected from 111 patients assessed for cognitive complaints at the Oslo University Hospital Memory *** patients were grouped based on their amyloid *** CSF nanoplaque concentration was quantified with the thioflavin t-fluorescence correlation spectroscopy(tht-FCS)*** levels of nine cytokines(eotaxin-1,granulocyte stimulating factor,interleukin[IL]-6,IL-7,IL-8,monocyte chemoattractant protein-1,gammainduced protein 10,macrophage inflammatory protein[MIP]-1α,and MIP-1β)were quantified with a magnetic bead-based multiplex assay and read on a Luminex IS 200 ***:there were 49 amyloid-negative and 62 amyloid-positive patients in the cohort;none of the cytokines differed significantly between the amyloid *** increased nanoplaque levels were associated with levels of MIP-1βbelow the lower limit of quantification,and with decreased levels of MIP-1αand *** associations remained significant when adjusted for age,sex,cognitive function,apolipoproteinε4 status and CSF core biomarker ***:the cytokine levels were not associated with amyloid status in this *** nanoplaque levels were negatively associated with MIP-1β,MIP-1αand IL-8,which is in line with recent findings suggesting that the upregulation of some cytokine markers has a protective role and is negatively associated with AD progression.

A 30-day incoherent scatter radar(ISR) experiment was conducted at Millstone Hill(288.5°E,42.6°N) from 4 October to 4 November *** altitude profiles of electron density N,ion and electron temperature(t and t),and line-of-sight velocity during this experiment were processed to deduce the topside plasma scale height H,vertical scale height VSH,Chapman scale height H,ion velocity, and the relative altitude gradient of plasma temperature (dt/dh)/t,as well as the F layer electron density (NF) and height(hF).these data are analyzed to explore the variations of the ionosphere over Millstone Hill under geomagnetically quiet and disturbed *** show that ionospheric parameters generally follow their median behavior under geomagnetically quiet conditions,while the main feature of the scale heights,as well as other parameters, deviated significantly from their median behaviors under disturbed *** enhanced variability of ionospheric scale heights during the storm-times suggests that the geomagnetic activity has a major impact on the behavior of ionospheric scale heights,as well as the shape of the topside electron density *** Millstone Hill,the diurnal behaviors of the median VSH and H are very similar to each other and are not so tightly correlated with that of the plasma scale height H or the plasma *** present study confirms the sensitivity of the ionospheric scale heights over Millstone Hill to thermal structure and *** values of VSH/H tend to decrease as {dt/dh)/t becomes larger or the dynamic processes become enhanced.

自 1994年 4月以来 ,新一代静止气象卫星大气垂直探测器一直在 18个红外谱段测量大气辐射 ,提供了研究海洋与大气的能力 ,其能力大大超出上一代 GOES。 Menzel和 Purdom预见到了 GOES- 8/9大气探测器多项可能的改进。本文论述了取得的一些成果 ,详细介绍了大气探测器的飞行性能 ,给出了经业务验证及定期可得的试验产品 ,并描述了它们对临近预报和天气预报的影响。目前从 GOES8/9大气探测器首次获取北美洲及其邻近海域的每小时业务探测产品。 GOES-8/9大气探测器在描述美国大陆上空的湿度变化用于数值天气预报模式 ,监测海面风 ,并将高空云信息提供给国家天气局的地表自动观测系统等方面作出了重大贡献。许多探测产品通过与无线电探空和飞行测值的比较得以验证。在业务和研究预报模式中 ,有关晴空区和云区云特性的探测数据同化取得大量进展 ;GOES- 8/9大气湿度垂直探测数据现正用于业务 Eta区域预报模式中。
