Cholinesterase Activity as an Indicator of Health Risks among Kou Valley Farmers

Introduction: Pesticides are currently an essential component of agricultural production techniques for controlling pests and weeds. In Burkina Faso, non-compliance with good practice in the use of pesticides poses a real health problem for the population. this study examines the health risks associated with pesticide management in rice-growing areas. Material and Methods: A field survey was conducted in Bama, involving farmers, focusing on their socio-demographic characteristics, pesticide usage, and health effects. Cholinesterase levels were measured in subsample of farmers using a portable device. Data were analysed using Microsoft Excel, calculating means and percentages for various practices. Health consultations, protection methods, and pesticide management were studied. Erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase activity was compared before and after treatment. Data were categorised into classes based on inhibition levels, and correlation analyses determined relationships between variables such as age, years of experience, and cholinesterase activity. Results: the results indicate that rice cultivation is mainly carried out by a fairly young population, with nearly 63% being under the age of 50. Common poor practices in pesticide use include improper storage and reuse of leftover pesticides. Seven types of pesticides were identified, including organophosphates such as glyphosate, which was used in 26.7% of cases. this organophosphate has resulted in class B poisoning, causing a 30% - 50% reduction in erythrocyte cholinesterase activity. the health effects of pesticide use are felt by agricultural farmers through various symptoms of poisoning. Conclusion: to reduce the occurrence of pesticide poisoning, it is essential to launch information and awareness campaigns among the population and farmers to promote safe practices in pesticide use in Bama, Burkina Faso.

Background: Plastic pollution is the accumulation of waste composed of plastic and its derivatives all over the environment. Whether in the form of visible garbage or microparticles, as it slowly degrades, plastic pollution poses significant threats to terrestrial and aquatic habitats and the wildlife that call them home, whether through ingestion, entanglement or exposure to the chemicals contained in the material. Unfortunately, there is a lack of documentation on the impact of plastic waste on human health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods: We searched five electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Global Health, CINAHL and Web of Science) and gray literature, following the preferred reporting elements for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA), for the impact of plastic waste on human health in developing countries. We included quantitative and qualitative studies written in English and French. We assessed the quality of the included articles using the Mixed Methods Appraisal tool (MMAt). Results: A total of 3779 articles were initially identified by searching electronic databases. After eliminating duplicates, 3167 articles were reviewed based on title and abstract, and 26 were selected for full-text review. Only three articles were retained. the three articles dealt with practices likely to lead to oral exposure to plastic chemicals in human health, as well as the level of awareness of participants concerning the possible impact of plastic on human health, namely, the use of plastic baby bottles, the use of microwaves to cook food and reheat precooked food, the use of plastic bottles to store water in the refrigerator, water purifier containers with plastic bodies and plastic lunch boxes, the reuse of plastic bags and the inadequacy of treatment facilities. Conclusion: Plastic waste poses different risks to human health at every stage of its life cycle. Hence, strategies must be adopted to raise public awareness of the dangers of plastic

Effect of Biofertilizers on the Agromorphological Parameters of three Okra Cultivars in Southern Côte d’Ivoire

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is an herbaceous plant of the Malvaceae family. In Côte d’Ivoire, okra production is estimated to be over 193,000 tons. this low production is largely due to poor soils and hardly covers the needs of the population. to remedy this, growers systematically use mineral fertilizers. However, these fertilizers pollute the environment. to find an alternative to chemical fertilization and increase production, the effect of biofertilizers (Spaawet, Retone, Super Gro) compared with NPK mineral fertilizer was evaluated on Divo, teriman, and Djonan F1 cultivars. the trial was set up in a factorial block design with three replications. Plant height, number of functional leaves, and crown diameter were assessed at 60 days after sowing (DAS). the time to 50% flowering, production time, and fruit yield were calculated. the results showed that the biofertilizer Retone induced the highest heights and number of functional leaves, with averages of 61.89 cm and 29.88 leaves, respectively. the diameter at the crown (17.77 mm) was highest with the NPK mineral fertilizer, and the shortest 50% flowering time, with an average of 47.61 days, was also obtained with the biofertilizer Retone. the NPK mineral fertilizer produced the longest production time, with an average of 35.25 days. the highest yields were obtained using Retone (11.07 t/ha) and NPK (9.52 t/ha) fertilizers. the “Divo*Retone” interaction produced the highest yield with an average of 12.19 t/ha. the biofertilizer Retone could therefore be used as an alternative fertilizer to chemical fertilization in okra crops, given its effect on the parameters assessed.

Using robotic devices might improve recovery post-stroke, but the optimal way to apply robotic assistance has yet to be determined. the current study aimed to investigate whether training under the robotic active-assisted mode improves bimanual motor skill learning(biMSkL) more than training under the active mode in stroke patients. twenty-six healthy individuals(HI) and 23 chronic hemiparetic stroke patients with a detectable lesion on MRI or Ct scan, who demonstrated motor deficits in the upper limb, were randomly allocated to two parallel groups. the protocol included a two-day training on a new bimanual cooperative task, LIFt-tHE-tRAY, under either the active or activeassisted modes(where assistance decreased in a pre-determined stepwise fashion) with the bimanual version of the REAplan? robotic device. the hypothesis was that the active-assisted mode would result in greater biMSkL than the active mode. the biMSkL was quantified by a speed-accuracy trade-off(SAt) before(t1) and immediately after(t2) training on days 1 and 2(t3 and t4). the change in SAt after 2 days of training(t4/t1) indicated that both HI and stroke patients learned and retained the bimanual cooperative task. After 2 days of training, the active-assisted mode did not improve biMSkL more than the active mode(t4/t1) in HI nor stroke patients. Whereas HI generalized the learned bimanual skill to different execution speeds in both the active and active-assisted subgroups, the stroke patients generalized the learned skill only in the active subgroup. taken together, the active-assisted mode, applied in a pre-determined stepwise decreasing fashion, did not improve biMSkL more than the active mode in HI and stroke subjects. the antiretroviral treatment (ARt) has significantly reduced the number of new HIV/AIDS infections and related deaths. However, cases of immunovirological discordance (IVD) are found in various locations. the objective of this study was to determine the profile of People living with HIV (PLHIV) with IVD and to identify associated factors. We conducted a cross-sectional study based on the records of PLHIV under ARt for at least 6 months, followed at Hpital de Jour Donka from 2015 to 2017, and having both viral load (CV) and CD4 t-cell count. Prevalence of IVD was 34.57%, with 23.87% for immunological discordance (ID) and 10.7% for virological discordance (VD). Females were predominant (66.26%), and male gender influenced IVD with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.006) and was associated with VD (p = 0.007). the average age was 38.77 11.30 years. PLHIV were classified at WHO stages 3 and 4 (86.01%). the median initial haemoglobin level was 11.5 g/L [3.2 - 12]. the mean initial CD4 t-cell count was 272.84 cells/mm3 201.6. the median initial viral load (VL) was 147,337 copies/mL [1092 - 31,675,000]. the initial CD4 t-cell count 3 was associated with IVD with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.0009) and correlated with ID (p = 0.000). Prurigo was associated with IVD with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.003). Cerebral toxoplasmosis was not associated with IVD but was associated with ID (p = 0.04). this study allowed us to describe the profile of PLHIV with IVD. the main associated factors were male gender, initial CD4 t-cell count 3, toxoplasmosis, prurigo, and herpes zoster.

Risk of colon cancer in hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer patients as predicted by fuzzy modeling:Influence of smoking

AIM： to investigate whether a fuzzy logic model could predict colorectal cancer （CRC） risk engendered by smoking in hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer （HNPCC） patients. MEtHODS： three hundred and forty HNPCC mismatch repair （MMR） mutation carriers from the Creighton University Hereditary Cancer Institute Registry were selected for modeling. Age-dependent curves were generated to elucidate the joint effects between gene mutation （hMLH1 or hMSH2）, gender, and smoking status on the probability of developing CRC. RESULtS： Smoking significantly increased CRC risk in male hMSH2 mutation carriers （P 〈 0.05）. hMLH1 mutations augmented CRC risk relative to hMSH2 mutation carriers for males （P 〈 0.05）. Males had a significantly higher risk of CRC than females for hMLH1 non smokers （P 〈 0.05）, hMLH1 smokers （P 〈 0.1） and hMSH2 smokers （P 〈 0.1）. Smoking promoted CRC in a dose-dependent manner in hMSH2 in males （P 〈 0.05）. Females with hMSH2 mutations and both sexes with the hMLH1 groups only demonstrated a smoking effect after an extensive smoking history （P 〈 0.05）. CONCLUSION： CRC promotion by smoking in HNPCC patients is dependent on gene mutation, gender and age. these data demonstrate that fuzzy modeling may enable formulation of clinical risk scores, thereby allowing individualization of CRC prevention strategies.

Is analysis of lower esophageal sphincter vector volumes of value in diagnosing gastroesophageal reflux disease?

AIM:With successful surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD),there is interest in understanding the anti-reflux barrier and its mechanisms of *** date, the potential use of vector volumes to predict the DeMeester score has not been adequately explored. MEtHODS:627 patients in the referral database received esophageal manometry and ambulatory 24-hour pH *** data included LES resting pressure(LESP), overall LES length(OL)and abdominal length(AL),total vector volume(tVV)and intrabdominal vector volume(IVV). RESULtS:In cases where LESP,tVV or IVV were all below normal,there was an 81.4%probability of a positive DeMeester *** cases where all three were normal, there was an 86.9%probability that the DeMeester score would be ***-operating characteristics(ROC) for LESP,tVV and IVV were nearly identical and indicated no useful cut-off *** regression demonstrated that LESP and IVV had the strongest association with a positive DeMeester score;however,the regression formula was only 76.1%accurate. CONCLUSION:While the indices based on tVV,IVV and LESP are more sensitive and specific,respectively,than any single measurement,the measurement of vector volumes does not add significantly to the diagnosis of GERD.

the receptor tyrosine kinase c-Met is essential for embryonic development and tissue regeneration,as it promotes cell survival,proliferation,migration,and angiogenesis[1,2].the HGF/c-Met axis modulates several inflammatory-mediated diseases by acting on a wide variety of cells[3].Nevertheless,studies on the role of c-Met in peripheral t cell functions are very limited,partly because we and others have reported negligible c-Met expression in naive t cells[2,4].

Even though a large number of large-scale arch dams with height larger than 200 m have been built in the world, the transient groundwater flow behaviors and the seepage control effects in the dam foundations under difficult geological conditions are rarely reported. this paper presents a case study on the transient groundwater flow behaviors in the rock foundation of Jinping I double-curvature arch dam, the world＇s highest dam of this type to date that has been completed. taking into account the geological settings at the site, an inverse modeling technique utilizing the time series measurements of both hydraulic head and discharge was adopted to back-calculate the permeability of the foundation rocks,which effectively improves the uniqueness and reliability of the inverse modeling results. the transient seepage flow in the dam foundation during the reservoir impounding was then modeled with a parabolic variational inequality（PVI） method. the distribution of pore water pressure, the amount of leakage, and the performance of the seepage control system in the dam foundation during the entire impounding process were finally illustrated with the numerical results.
