REVIEW Risk Assessment of the Mycotoxin Ochratoxin A

Ochratoxin A (OA) is a mycotoxin which has been found to occur in foods of plant origin, in edible animal tissues, as well as in human blood sera and tissues. the ability of OA to move up the food chain is aided by its long half-life in certain edible animal species. In this report, an evaluation of the health risks to Canadians due to the presence of OA in food products is presented. the first part of the report deals with the physicochemical aspects, mycology, laboratory production, analytical methods, and natural occurrence in plant products, animal products, and human tissues. the stability of OA in foods and feeds, the effects of food processing, and the removal from foods and feeds by physicochemical means are also discussed. From these data, the worst case estimate for the daily exposure of Canadians to OA, from the consumption of pork-based food products and cereal foods, is approximately 5 ng OA/kg body wt (mean of eaters) for young children, the highest consumption group on a body weight basis. the second part of the report deals with the metabolic disposition as well as the available toxicity database for OA in laboratory animals, farm animals, and humans. the major target for OA toxicity in all mammalian species tested is the kidney, and endemic nephropathies affecting livestock as well as humans have been attributed to OA. OA is also teratogenic, and in the fetus the major target is the developing central nervous system. Recent studies have provided 'clear evidence' of the carcinogenicity of OA in two rodent species. OA was found to be nonmutagenic in various microbial and mammalian gene mutation assays, but weak genotoxic activity to mammalian cells was noted. In addition, OA was found to suppress immune function. Based on the NtP carcinogenicity study with OA in rats, the estimated tolerable daily intake in humans ranges from 0.2 to 4.2 ng OA/kg body wt, depending on the method of extrapolation used. Optimization and control of synchrotron emission in ultraintense laser–solid interactions using machine learning

越来越多的研究表明,炎症可能会促进阻塞性睡眠呼吸暂停(OSA)的发展。但这些研究大多是横断面研究,目前仍缺乏前瞻性研究探讨炎症在OSA发生发展中的作用,炎症特征的改变是发生在OSA发病之前还是之后,或是两者皆有,尚有待阐明。本研究的研究对象来自护士健康研究(NHS)、护士健康研究Ⅱ(NHSⅡ)、卫生专业人员随访研究(HPFS)以及多种族动脉粥样硬化研究(MESA)四个美国队列,这些研究对象在基线时都未曾诊断OSA。C-反应蛋白(CRP)是一种敏感但非特异性的炎症标志物,本研究测量了来自4个队列的研究对象的基线CRP水平,并进行随访以评估循环中CRP水平与OSA风险之间的关系。经过10~18年的随访发现,对BMI外的多变量进行调整后,基线 CRP 水平每增加1倍,OSA 风险总 OR值为 1.24(95% CI:1.18~1.30),这表明较高的基线CRP水平与OSA风险增加相关。尽管调整BMI后这种关联减弱,但CRP和OSA风险之间的正相关联仍然存在,尤其是在年轻人、体重不足/正常体重的个体或绝经前女性中。考虑到年龄增大、BMI增高和绝经后状态是公认的OSA危险因素,因此本研究结果提示炎症可能是没有传统OSA危险因素的早发OSA患者的一个重要致病机制。此外,研究发现CRP与以日间过度嗜睡(EDS)为特征的OSA表型及以高气道塌陷性、低唤醒阈值为特征的OSA内型的发展风险增加更密切相关。这一研究为揭示炎症在OSA发病机制中的作用提供了前瞻性证据,扩展了先前关于炎症相关疾病或促炎生活方式增加OSA风险的证据。

A new approach to solar flare prediction

All three components of the current density are required to compute the heating rate due to free magnetic energy *** we present a first test of a new model developed to determine if the times of increases in the resistive heating rate in active region(AR)photospheres are correlated with the subsequent occurrence of M and X flares in the corona.A data driven,3D,non-force-free magnetohydrodynamic model restricted to the near-photospheric region is used to compute time series of the complete current density and the resistive heating rate per unit volume[Q(t)]in each pixel in neutral line regions(NLRs)of 14 *** model is driven by time series of the magnetic field B measured by the Helioseismic&Magnetic Imager on the Solar Dynamics Observatory(SDO)*** Doppler periods due to SDO orbital motion are filtered out of the time series for B in every AR *** each AR,the cumulative distribution function(CDF)of the values of the NLR area integral Qi(t)of Q(t)is found to be a scale invariant power law distribution essentially identical to the observed CDF for the total energy released in coronal *** suggests that coronal flares and the photospheric Qi are correlated,and powered by the same *** model predicts spikes in Qi with values orders of magnitude above background *** spikes are driven by spikes in the non-force free component of the current *** times of these spikes are plausibly correlated with times of subsequent M or X flares a few hours to a few days *** spikes occur on granulation scales,and may be signatures of heating in horizontal current *** is also found that the times of relatively large values of the rate of change of the NLR unsigned magnetic flux are also plausibly correlated with the times of subsequent M and X flares,and spikes in Qi.

We extend a theorem of Ivanev and Saff to show that for the Hermite-Pade interpolant at the roots of unity to a function meromorphic in the unit disc, its leading coefficients vanish if and only if the corresponding interpolani to a related function vanishes at given points outside the unit disc. the result is then extended to simultaneous Hermite-Pade interpolation to a finite set of functions.

Comparison of dietary intakes of Canadian Armed Forces personnel consuming field rations in acute hot, cold, and temperate conditions with standardized infantry

Background:Dietary Reference Intakes are used to guide the energy intake of the Canadian Armed Forces(CAF)field rations provided to military personnel deployed for training or ***,the high energy expenditures likely to occur under harsh environmental/metabolically challenging deployment conditions may not be adequately *** study examined the Ad libitum energy and nutrient intakes of CAF personnel(n=18)consuming field rations in a resting thermoneutral environment and during a day of standardized strenuous infantry activities at varying environmental ***:Dietary intake was assessed using a measured food intake/food waste method during the experimental treatment and for 6 h after *** treatments were administered in a randomized counterbalanced design:exercise(as standardized infantry activities)in the heat(30℃),exercise in the cold(–10℃),exercise in temperate thermoneutral(21℃)air temperatures and a resting(sedentary)trial(21℃).Results:the average Ad libitum consumption of field rations was 70%of the provided total energy(2776±99 kcal/8 h)during all *** with an acute challenge of increased energy expenditure and temperature stress in the simulated field conditions,participants’energy intakes(1985±747 kcal/8 h)under hot,cold and temperate treatments did not differ from energy intake during the sedentary condition(1920±640 kcal/8 h).Participants’energy intakes(1009±527 kcal/6 h)did not increase during the 6 h posttreatment period when the stresses of the strenuous physical activities and the harsh environmental temperatures had ***:these results should be considered when planning the provision of field rations for CAF personnel expected to be engaged in strenuous physical activities with prolonged exposure to temperature extremes.
