Development of endemicity and conservation importance indices for tropical forests and the floral diversity assessment of *** in Benguet,Philippines

the scientific community faces the challenge of measuring progress toward biodiversity targets and indices have been traditionally ***,recent inventories in secondary tropical mountain forests using traditional biodiversity indices have yielded results that are indistinct with primary *** shows the need to develop complementary indices that goes beyond species count but integrates the distribution and conservation status of the *** study developed endemicity and conservation importance index for tropical forest that incorporated the distribution and conservation status of the *** indices were applied to ***,a remnant primary mossy forest in Buguias,Benguet,Philippines,that resulted to endemicity index of 81.07 and conservation importance index of *** these with secondary forest sites with comparable Shannon-Wiener,Simpson,Evenness and Margalef’s indices,our endemicity and conservation indices clearly differentiates primary forest(our study site)with higher values from secondary forests with much lower ***,we are proposing these indices for a direct but scientifically-informed identification of specific sites for conservation and protection in tropical ***,our study documented a total of 168 vascular plant species(79 endemic and 12 locally threatened species)in *** are of tropical elements for both generic and species levels with some temperate elements that could be attributed to the site's high elevation and semi-temperate *** are important baseline information for conservation plans and monitoring of tropical mossy forests.

Randomized controlled trials - mechanistic studies of testosterone and the cardiovascular system

testosterone deficiency is common in men with cardiovascular disease （CVD）, and randomized placebo-controlled trials （RCts） have reported beneficial effects of testosterone therapy on exercise-induced cardiac ischemia in chronic stable angina, functional exercise capacity, maximum oxygen consumption during exercise （VO2m,x） and muscle strength in chronic heart failure （CHF）, shortening of the Q-t interval, and improvement of some cardiovascular risk factors. testosterone deficiency is associated with an adverse CV risk profile and mortality. Clinical and scientific studies have provided mechanistic evidence to support and explain the findings of the RCts. testosterone is a rapid-onset arterial vasodilator within the coronary circulation and other vascular beds including the pulmonary vasculature and can reduce the overall peripheral systemic vascular resistance. Evidence has demonstrated that testosterone mediates this effect on vascular reactivity through calcium channel blockade （L-calcium channel） and stimulates potassium channel opening by direct nongenomic mechanisms. testosterone also stimulates repolarization of cardiac myocytes by stimulating the ultra-rapid potassium channel-operated current. testosterone improves cardiac output, functional exercise capacity, VO2m=x and vagally mediated arterial baroreceptor cardiac reflex sensitivity in CHF, and other mechanisms. Independent of the benefit of testosterone on cardiac function, testosterone substitution may also increase skeletal muscle glucose metabolism and enhance muscular strength, both factors that could contribute to the improvement in functional exercise capacity may include improved glucose metabolism and muscle strength. testosterone improves metabolic CV risk factors including body composition, insulin resistance, and hypercholesterolemia by improving both glucose utilization and lipid metabolism by a combination of genomic and nongenomic actions of glucose uptake and utilization expression of the

Climate change and biodiversity loss are pressing global challenges(Pörtner et al.,2021).However,as global energy demand continues to increase(IEA,2021),nations face significant challenges to decarbonization and reaching“net zero”due to trade-offs between the often-competing needs of renewable energy generation and biodiversity *** example,hydropower generates renewable energy(Gibson et al.,2017),yet there are well-documented and severe consequences of dam development for biodiversity(e.g.,Zarfl et al.,2019)and people(e.g.,Bisht,2009)due to reservoir creation and disruption of river *** such potentially damaging ecological and social trade-offs,hydropower currently contributes 70%of global renewable energy and there are at least 3700 large dams planned or under construction globally(Zhang&Gu,2023).

惰质组是煤中常见且重要的显微组分组,作为古野火指示物在古环境研究中发挥着至关重要的作用,古野火在多种生态系统中扮演着不可替代的角色.通过惰质组来讨论古野火与古气候变化及古植物演化的研究逐年增多.丝质体和半丝质体的反射率可以用来估算古野火的燃烧温度及类型,进而判断不同类型野火的燃烧特征.惰质组的相对丰度可以重建大气氧含量.人工智能(AI)和科学数据库的在线搜索工具的快速发展,使得查找、收集、整理和分析从最老到最新的出版物,以及出版物中的全球惰质组数据成为可能.本文使用数据提取工具Deep Shovel收集分析从志留纪到新近纪的全球惰质组数据,然后应用Gplates、ArcGIS pro、tableau等多个软件建立地质历史时期惰质组相对丰度的变化模型,该模型可以与其他因素如大气氧含量、植物进化及古气候变化等进行关联.惰质组在地质历史中的分布特征差异很大,二叠纪属于典型的“高惰质组含量-高大气氧含量”时期,新生代属于典型的“低惰质组含量-低大气氧含量”时期.本文提出惰质组特征与古环境因素之间的可能性正负反馈关系,揭示出惰质组在地质古环境演化研究中发挥着不可替代的作用.未来惰质组相关研究应该聚焦在有机岩石学和有机地球化学的深入结合,大数据驱动的惰质组时、空分布特征,古野火在不同气候背景下的地球系统中发挥的作用以及融合现代野火研究预测未来由于气候变化导致的野火发生的频率和强度.

In this editorial,we comment on the article by He et al,specifically in relation to the efficacy of bariatric surgery vs glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist(GLP-1RA)therapy in the management of type 2 diabetes(t2D)associated with *** surgery has now also been shown to be safe and effective in pre-teens and teenagers with obesity and t2D,but information on newer GLP-1RAs in these groups is predictably *** older individuals(age>65 years),both bariatric surgery and GLP-1RA therapy improve cardiovascular ***-tric surgery is not infrequently associated with post-operative postprandial hypoglycemia,which is not the case with GLP-1RAs and,paradoxically,there is evidence that GLP-1RAs may reduce both the frequency and severity of postprandial *** trials of the long-term efficacy of bariatric surgery and GLP-1RAs are indicated.

Perspectives for the recovery of rare earths from end-of-life fluorescent lamps

this vision paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the three main options for the recycling of rare-earth ele- ments from end-of-life fluorescent lamps：（1） direct re-use of the lamp phosphor mixture; （2） separation of the lamp phosphor mixture into the different phosphor components; （3） recovery of the rare-earth content. An overview is given of commercial activities in Europe in the domain of recycling of materials from end-of-life fluorescent lamps and the recovery of rare earths from these lamps. the collection of end-of-life fluorescent lamps is currently driven by a legal framework that prohibited the release of mercury to the environment. the contaminations of the lamp phosphor powders by mercury and by small glass particles of crushed fluorescent lamps are limiting factors in the recycling process. Research should be directed to an advanced clean-up of the reclaimed lamp phosphor fraction, and in particular to the removal of mercury and glass fragments. the recovery of rare earths from the lamp phosphors could be facilitated by taking advantage of the differences in resistance of the different lamp phosphors by chemical attack by inorganic ac- ids and bases.

Distribution and morpho-anatomical characterization of ’Beket’(Coriaria japonica subsp. intermedia(Matsum) t.C. Huanh) in Cordillera Central Range, Northern Philippines

Coriaria,the only genus under family Coriariacea,receives a lot interest among botanist due to its controversial taxonomic treatment and unique phytochemistry that could be commercially *** populations of Coriaria japonica *** in Cordillera Central Range(CCR),Philippines had never been studied in *** the need for more information on this controversial genus,the study deemed it necessary to present the distribution and morpho-anatomical description of *** *** in CCR.A total of 123 populations were documented,found at an elevation range of 1334 to 2494 m asl and stretched between16°31’37.7"to 17°5’47.8"N and 120°39’40.3"to120°55’48"*** these populations showed a narrow linear pattern of distribution concentrated at the southern portion of *** plant is a shrub with simple leaves,collateral buds,raceme inflorescence,bisexual flowers with persistent perianth forming an accessory fruit after *** terms of anatomy,much are of the usual dicot characters such as dorsiventral leaf with stomata concentrated in the lower epidermis,eustele with pith in the stem andpresence of secondary growth both on old stem and old *** findings of the study include the123 populations,the larger leaf measurements,longer petals and larger fruits than the original description given by ***,the paracytic type of stomata and presence of pith in the primary roots of *** *** are interesting since these are common monocot characters while the plant is *** findings are additional information that could help clear the controversies on the genus *** importantly,our results could provide essential information for understanding the plant and for developing conservation strategies not just for this plant but also for the other related plants in the CCR biogeographical zone.

Oxidative damages to DNA by indoor PM10s: their relationships with trace element compositions

Plasmid DNA assay and ICP-MS analysis were conducted in order to investigate the bioreactivity of inhalable particles （PM_ 10） and the relationship between bioreactivity and trace element compositions of PM_ 10 in Beijing air. A total of four PM_ 10 samples were carefully selected to represent the indoor and corresponding outdoor environments: one from urban smoker's home, two from non-smoker's homes, and the other from the outdoor. In general, the oxidative damage by indoor PM_ 10 was slightly higher than that of outdoor. Among the four sets of samples, the PM_ 10 from the smoker's home had a lowest tD50 （toxic dose of PM_ 10 causing 50% DNA to be damaged）, being 100 μg·mL -1, suggesting the highest bioreactivity. the heavy metals are believed to be the main reason for oxidative damage to plasmid DNA. the ICP-MS analysis combined with the DNA assay showed that the water-soluble zinc levels had better relationship with tD50 values than other elements, implying that water-soluble zinc might play an important role in the damage of DNA. It is concluded that the PM_ 10 in smoker's home had the highest level of water-soluble zinc as well as the lowest tD50 （highest bioreactivity）. Iron is considered to be one of the most bioreactive elements, but it will cause little damage to plasmid DNA, probably because iron is mainly in water-insoluble state in Beijing PM_ 10.

As hydropower development expands across lowland tropical forests,flooding and concomitant insular fragmentation have become important threats to *** created insular landscapes serve as natural laboratories to investigate biodiversity responses to *** of these most iconic landscapes is the Balbina Hydroelectric Reservoir in Brazilian Amazonia,occupying>400000 ha and comprising>3500 forest ***,we synthesise the current knowledge on responses of a wide range of biological groups to insular fragmentation at *** has largely concentrated on a set of 22 islands and three mainland *** total,39 studies were conducted over nearly two decades,covering 17 vertebrate,invertebrate,and plant *** species responses varied according to taxonomic group,island area was consistently included and played a pivotal role in 66.7%of all studies examining patterns of species *** persistence was further affected by species traits,mostly related to species capacity to use/traverse the aquatic matrix or tolerate habitat degradation,as noted for species of vertebrates and orchid *** research is needed to improve our understanding of such effects on wider ecosystem *** Impact Assessments must account for changes in both the remaining habitat amount and configuration,and subsequent long-term species losses.
