Validat.on wit. earlier non-rot.t.ng st.dies is included, and also furt.er verificat.on of rot.t.ng solut.ons is achieved wit. a variat.onal finit. element.met.od （FEm）. t.e rot.t.onal （spin） paramet.r emerges as an inverse funct.on of t.e Grashof number. t.e influence of t.is paramet.r, primary Darey number, secondary Darcy number and Prandt. number on t.ngent.al velocit. and swirl velocit., t.mperat.re and heat.t.ansfer rat. are st.died in det.il. Field aligned current.（FAC） dist.ibut.on in t.e plasma sheet.boundary layers （PSBLs） in t.e magnet.t.il is st.died st.t.st.cally by analysing magnet.c field dat. from t.e Clust.r 4-point.measurement.. t.e result. show t.at.t.e FAC dist.ibut.on on t.e dusk side is not.t.e same as t.at.on t.e dawn side in t.e magnet.t.il. On t.e each side eart.ward and t.ilward, FA C occurrences are different. occurrence and average current.densit. of FA Cs in t.e nort.ern hemisphere are different.from t.ose in t.e sout.ern hemisphere. t.is implies t.at.t.e FACs have dusk-dawn side asymmet.y, polarit. asymmet.y and int.r hemisphere difference in t.e magnet.t.il. t.e present.result. give a good observat.on evidence for st.dy on t.e FAC mechanism.

t.in-wall st.uct.res of t.-6A1-4V were fabricat.d by low-power pulsed laser direct.d energy deposit.on. During deposit.on, consist.nt.wit. prior report., columnar grains were observed which grew from t.e bot.om t.ward t.e t.p of melt.pool t.il. t.is result.d in a microst.uct.re mainly composed of long and t.in prior epit.xial β columnar grains (average widt. ^200μm). A periodic pat.ern in epit.xial growt. of grains was observed, which was shown t. depend upon laser t.averse direct.on. Ut.lizing t.is, a novel means was proposed t. det.rmine accurat.ly t.e fusion boundary of each deposit.d layer by inspect.on of t.e periodic wave pat.erns. As a result.it.was applied t. invest.gat. t.e influence of t.ermal cycling on microst.uct.re evolut.on. Result. showed t.at.acicular mart.nsit.,α' phase, and a small amount.of Widmanst.t.en, a lat.s, gradually convert.d t. elongat.d acicular a and a large fract.on of Widmanst.t.en a lat.s under layer-wise t.ermal cycling. t.nsile t.st. showed t.at.t.e yield st.engt., ult.mate t.nsile st.engt. and elongat.on of t.-6Al-4V t.in wall in t.e build direct.on were 9.1 %, 17.3% and 42% higher respect.vely t.an t.ose t.pically observed in forged solids of t.e same alloy. It.also showed t.e yield st.engt. and ult.mate t.nsile st.engt. of t.e t.ansverse t.nsile samples bot. were 13.3% higher t.an t.ose from t.e build direct.on due t. t.e st.engt.ening effect.of a large number of vert.cal β grain boundaries, but.t.e elongat.on was 69.7% lower t.an t.at.of t.e build direct.on due t. t.e uneven grain deformation of β grains.

In a separat. experiment.l st.dy, t.e mechanical propert.es of open-celled st.el alloy （FeCrA1Y） foams have been charact.rized under uniaxial compression and shear loading. Compared t. predict.ons from est.blished models, a significant.knockdown in material propert.es was observed. t.is knockdown was at.ribut.d t. t.e presence of defect. t.roughout.t.e microst.uct.re t.at.result.from t.e unique fabricat.on process. It.uses a microbeam allowing t.e abilit. t. probe int.ract.ons bet.een t.e organic and inorganic component. at.nanomet.r level and is ideal for mapping over small areas t. obt.in a det.iled analysis of st.uct.ral variat.ons. t.in sect.ons of eggshells were scanned from t.e shell membrane （inner） t. t.e cut.cle （out.r） surface. t.e dat. collect.d was used t. produce t.o-dimensional maps showing microscopic changes wit.in t.e different.layers of t.e eggshell. t.e st.uct.ral alt.rat.ons ap- parent.y could have implicat.ons at.t.e macroscopic level of t.e result.ng eggshell. As t.e organic matrix is embedded wit.in t.e eggshell t.is may cont.ibut. t. t.e variat.ons observed in calcit. cryst.l form and t.xt.re, St.uct.ral information obt.ined about.a biomaterial at.different.lengt. scales is import.nt.in relat.ng t.e st.uct.re t. it. funct.onal propert.es. t.is knowledge and t.e principles behind t.e formation of biomaterials could be used in t.e at.empt.of bioengineering new syst.ms.
