the present study was carried out to track the path of Vellar estuary over a period of 38 years （1970-2008） and also to detect the impact of tsunami on estuarine complex of the Vellar estuary. Visual interpretation techniques were employed by using muitispectral data of Landsat tM （1991） and IRS-P6 LISS III （2004, 2006, and 2008） to delineate shoreline changes in the VeUar estuarine complex. Results clearly revealed the changes that occurred along the estuarine path over the period, and severe erosion was noticed in the seaward side of the MGR thittu and accretion, along the estuarine mouth. It is also visible that there is clear river path shift in the river course. Although the sandbar formation was seen with only little morphologic modification up to 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami that struck this coast （26 December, 2004） distorted the sandbar of the Vellar estuarine mouth; however, the 2006 satel- lite images confirmed that the sandbar was formed again to its original structure as that of before the tsunami.

the present study revealed proliferation of macro-algae modifying coral reef ecosystems in a different manner due to diseases and sedimentations in the Mandapam group of islands in the Gulf of Mannar. Benthic surveys were conducted with major attack of seven coral reefs diseases with high sedimentation rate, nine species of fleshy macro-algae(turbinaria ornata, turbinaria conaides, Caulerpa scalpelliformis, Caulerpa racemosa, Kappaphycus alvarezii, Padina gymnosphora, Sargassum wightii, Ulva reticulata and Calurpa lentillifera) proliferation against major corals life forms(Acropora branching, Acropora digitate, Acropora tabulate, coral massive, coral submassive, coral foliose and coral encrusting). the results confirm that diseased corals most favor to macro-algae growth(15.27%) rather than the sedimentation covered corals(8.24 %). In the degradation of coral life forms, massive corals were more highly damaged(7.05%) than any other forms. Within a short period of time(May to September), coral coverage shrank to 17.4% from 21.9%, macro-algae increased 23.51% and the average sedimentation rate attained 77.52 mg cm^(-2) d^(-1) with persisting coral reef diseases of 17.59%. the Pearson correlation showed that the coral cover decreased with increasing macro-algae growth, which was statistically significant(r =-0.774, n = 100, P the proliferation of the various macro-algae C. scalpellifrmis, t. ornata, C. racemosa, t. conaides, U. reticulata, S. wightii, K. alvarezii, P. gymnosphora and C. lentillifera increased with percentages of 6.0, 5.8, 5.7, 4.9, 4.2, 3.7, 2.7 and 1.9, respectively. If this trend continues, the next generation of new recruit corals will undoubtedly lead to a phase shift in Gulf of Mannar corals.

Inter-annual and seasonal variations in hydrological parameters and its implications on chlorophyll a distribution along the southwest coast of Bay of Bengal

Seasonal and inter-annual variability of hydrological parameters and its impact on chlorophyll distribution was studied from January 2009 to December 2011 at four coastal stations along the southwest Bay of Bengal. Statistical analysis （principal component analysis （PCA）, two-way analysis of variance （ANOVA） and correlation analysis） showed the significant impact of hydrological parameters on chlorophyll distribution in the study area. the ranges of different parameters recorded were 23.8-33.8℃ （SSt）, 4.00-36.00 （salinity）, 7.0-9.2 （pH）, 4.41-8.32 mg/L （dissolved oxygen）, 0.04-2.45 μmol/L （nitrite）, 0.33-16.10 μmol/L （nitrate）, 0.02-2.51 μmol/L （ammonia）, 0.04-3.32 μmol/L （inorganic phosphate）, 10.09-85.28 μmol/L （reactive silicate） and 0.04-13.8 μg/L （chlorophyll）. PCA analysis carried out for different seasons found variations in the relationship between physico-chemical parameters and chlorophyll in which nitrate and chlorophyll were positively loaded at PC1 （principal component 1） during spring inter-monsoon and at PC2 （principal component 2） during other seasons. Likewise correlation analysis also showed significant positive relationship between chlorophyll and nutrients especially with nitrate （~0.734）. Distribution of hydrobiological parameters between stations and distances was significantly varying as evidenced from the ANOVA results. the study found that the spatial and temporal distribution of chlorophyll was highly dependent on the availability of nutrients especially, nitrate in the southwest Bay of Bengal coastal waters.

A survey on coral bleaching was carried out at Agatti Island of Lakshadweep from May to June *** sea surface temperatures(SSts)of the region exceeded the seasonal average and delayed the onset of monsoon,which triggered widespread bleaching of *** Agatti reefs showed an average of 73%bleached corals with apparent bleaching-related mortality of sea anemones(87%)and giant clams(83%).the SSt increased up to 34℃with an average maximum SSt of 32.5℃ during the study period between May and June *** reefs on the southern side of the island are fully or partially exposed to sun light during low tide in contrast to the other *** suggests that the mortality is more likely due to the low tide exposure than exclusively due to the elevated *** indicated a clear increase in coral bleaching during April 2010,at levels higher than that in normal summer.

Isolation and Characterization of Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacteria from Seagrass Rhizosphere Soil

Phosphate-solubilizing bacterial strains(6 Nos.) were isolated from the rhizosphere soils of two seagrasses(Halophila ovalis(***.) Hook and Halodule pinifolia(Miki) Hartog) in the Vellar *** studies found that the strain PSSG6 was effective in phosphate solubilization with Phosphate Solubilization efficiency index E = 375 ± 8.54,followed by the strain PSSG5 with Phosphate Solubilization efficiency index E = 275 ± *** the 6 strains isolated,the strains PSSG4 and PSSG5 be-longed to the genus Bacillus,and PSSG1,PSSG2 and PSSG3 were identified as Citrobacter sp.,Shigella sp.,and Klebsiella sp.,respectively,by conventional method,and PSSG6 was identified as Bacillus circulans using conventional and molecular methods.

this review explores the natural products of seagrass that are to be exploited for their bioactive *** from portraying the presence of a wide array of secondary compounds such as phenols,flavonoids,sterols and lipids from different seagrass species,the focus is on novel natural products projecting towards their biological *** there are a significant number of reports on the abundance of secondary metabolites from seagrass and their bioactive derivatives,only a small number of reports explore their functional and defensive *** have been made to collate the available information on seagrass natural products and clarify their function and metabolic pathway’*** is emphasized that metabolic profiling of seagrass should be extensively progressed to obtain a deeper knowledge about the specific roles of each natural *** investigation of seagrass natural products for their bioactive potential would most likely result in the detection of surprising and unexpected novel chemical structures and clinical leads that may be useful to mankind.
