Hot water treatment was performed to modify the surface of porous tiO2 layer prepared by anodic spark oxidation technique for better *** oxide layer without water treatment exhibited a porous surface with few nanometer features and consisted of poorly crystallized *** water treatment,the poorly crystallized oxides were transformed into crystalline anatase gradually and numerous nanoparticles formed on the oxide surface,leading to increased surface roughness at the *** indentation deformation behaviors of oxide layer before and after water treatment were investigated and *** show that under the indentation load,the untreated anodic tiO2 layer exhibited good adhesion to the *** contrast,after water treatment,apparent oxides pile-up and spallation were observed around the indentation,indicating decreased adhesion strength.

It is estimated that half of all patients with cancer eventually develop a syndrome of cachexia, with anorexia and a progressive loss of adipose tissue and skeletal muscle mass. Cancer cachexia is characterized by systemic inflammation, negative protein and energy balance, and an involuntary loss of lean body mass. It is an insidious syndrome that not only has a dramatic impact on patient quality of life, but also is associated with poor responsesto chemotherapy and decreased survival. Cachexia is still largely an underestimated and untreated condition, despite the fact that multiple mechanisms are reported to be involved in its development, with a number of cytokines postulated to play a role in the etiology of the persistent catabolic state. Existing therapies for cachexia, including orexigenic appetite stimulants, focus on palliation of symptoms and reduction of the distress of patients and families rather than prolongation of life. Recent therapies for the cachectic syndrome involve a multidisciplinary approach. Combination therapy with diet modification and/or exercise has been added to novel pharmaceutical agents, such as Megestrol acetate, medroxyprogesterone, ghrelin, omega-3-fatty acid among others. these agents are reported to have improved survival rates as well as quality of life. In this review, we will discuss the emerging understanding of the mechanisms of cancer cachexia, the current treatment options including multidisciplinary combination therapies, as well an update on new and ongoing clinical trials.

A fully coherent free electron laser(FEL) seeded with a higher-order harmonic(HH) pulse from high-order harmonic generation(HHG) is successfully operated for a sufficiently prolonged time in pilot user experiments by using a timing drift feedback. For HHG-seeded FELs, the seeding laser pulses have to be synchronized with electron bunches. Despite seeded FELs being non-chaotic light sources in principle, external laser-seeded FELs are often unstable in practice because of a timing jitter and a drift between the seeding laser pulses and the accelerated electron bunches. Accordingly,we constructed a relative arrival-timing monitor based on non-invasive electro-optic sampling(EOS). the EOS monitor made uninterrupted shot-to-shot monitoring possible even during the seeded FEL operation. the EOS system was then used for arrival-timing feedback with an adjustability of 100 fs for continual operation of the HHG-seeded FEL. Using the EOS-based beam drift controlling system, the HHG-seeded FEL was operated over half a day with an effective hit rate of 20%–30%. the output pulse energy was 20 μJ at the 61.2 nm wavelength. towards seeded FELs in the water window region, we investigated our upgrade plan to seed high-power FELs with HH photon energy of 30–100 e V and lase at shorter wavelengths of up to 2 nm through high-gain harmonic generation(HGHG) at the energy-upgraded SPring-8Compact SASE Source(SCSS) accelerator. We studied a benefit as well as the feasibility of the next HHG-seeded FEL machine with single-stage HGHG with tunability of a lasing wavelength.

A circuit was devised for removing the influence of Rn and tn on an ionization chamber gas monitor for β rays. the circuit subtracted the current due to Rn and tn from the gross current. A monitor installed the circuit canceled the concentration variation of Rn and tn caused by ventilation condition. the background level of the gas monitor compensated the influence of Rn and tn was reduced by 10%. the minimum detectable concentrations of the compensated monitor were lower than the legal concentration limits in exhaust gas of 8 radioisotopes used in life science research and nuclear medicine: 3H, 14C, 24Na, 51Cr, 67Ga, 75Se, , 89Sr, 99mtc, and 3 main radioisotopes discharged from the nuclear power plants: 85Kr , 41Ar and 133Xe.

the enzymatic oxidation of (+)-catechin (Cat) with copper-containing oxidase, tyrosinase, was applied to hair colouring in the study. the Cat is oxidised to be o-benzoquinone form, the catechinone, which works as the hair dyestuff. Four kinds of hair colouring techniques using Cat were examined and each of their dyeability was compared in order to improve it. the first dyeing method is dyeing hair by the redissolved catechinone, which is preliminarily obtained by the oxidation of Cat (Redissolution Dyeing Method). the second one is dyeing hair in the dye solution just after the dye being formed by the enzymatic reaction (Sequential Dyeing Method). the third one is dyeing hair in solution containing Cat and the dyeing process is accompanied by the oxidation of Cat (Simultaneous Oxidation Dyeing Method). the fourth one is two-step dyeing that the hair immersed in Cat solution at the first step and then it is oxidised enzymatically to colour at the second step (Post-Oxidation Dyeing Method). the hair is dyed pale yellow by Redissolution Method, deeper yellowish brown by Sequential and Simultaneous Oxidation Dyeing Method and slightly reddish brown by Post-Oxidation Method with Cat. the order of their dyeability is the Simultaneous Oxidation ≈ Post-Oxidation > Sequential > Redissolution Dyeing Method at 30°C. the dyeability of Redissolution Method increases with an increase in dyeing temperature (t) between 20°C - 60°C. In Simultaneous Oxidation Method, the t increment also provides higher dyeability, and the colour of dyed hair becomes duller over 50°C. the Post-Oxidation Method shows higher dyeability at the lower oxidation temperature (20 °C - 40°C).

We analyzed an isolate of fungus that seems to be a new type orchid mycorrhizal fungus, “KMI (refers to Kyoto-Ma- tsubara-Ishii)”, obtained from the roots of Paphiopedilum thailandense Fowl. KMI has hyphal branching into right angle similar to Rhizoctonia-like fungi, but its spore formation resembled Nectoria, which is known as a teleomorph of Fusarium rather than Rhizoctonia. Its ribosomal DNA sequences of 18S and ItS have no similarity with any known fungal species. Proteins in molecular weight of 53 and 24 kDa, which are common to mycorrhizal fungi, were detected in KMI. When KMI was inoculated onto orchids, however it didn’t form pelotons or coils, but the hyphae in the root tissues were observed and the tissues were not decayed. No significant symptoms of Rhizoctonia or Fusarium disease, however, were developed on tomato and cucumber plants. the evidences suggest that KMI is a new type of orchid mycorrhizal fungus.

Reptile sex determination is attracting much attention because the great diversity of sex-determination and dosage compensation mechanisms permits us to approach fundamental questions about mechanisms of sex chromosome turnover. Recent studies have made significant progress in better understanding diversity and conservation of reptile sex chromosomes, with however no reptile master sex determination genes identified. Here we describe an integrated genomics and cytogenetics pipeline,combining probes generated from the microdissected sex chromosomes with transcriptome and genome sequencing to explore the sex chromosome diversity in non-model Australian reptiles. We tested our pipeline on a turtle, two species of geckos, and a monitor lizard. Genes identified on sex chromosomes were compared to the chicken genome to identify homologous regions among the four species. We identified candidate sex determining genes within these regions, including conserved vertebrate sex-determining genes pdgfa,pdgfra amh and wt1, and demonstrated their testis or ovary-specific expression. All four species showed gene-by-gene rather than chromosome-wide dosage compensation. Our results imply that reptile sex chromosomes originated by independent acquisition of sex-determining genes on different autosomes,as well as translocations between different ancestral macro-and *** discuss the evolutionary drivers of the slow differentiation and turnover of reptile sex chromosomes.
