Schools' Flood Emergency Preparedness in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan

Pakistan is highly exposed to climate-induced disasters, especially floods. Flooding history shows that educational establishments have been disproportionately hard-hit by flooding events. In Pakistan, school safety and preparedness is still a choice, rather than a mandatory requirement for all schools. But schools in Pakistan do have a responsibility to keep safe the students in their care,especially during and after the catastrophic events. This implies the need to maintain the environment in and around school property, so as to minimize the impacts of floods and to have the mechanisms in place to maximize a school's resilience. This study examined the emergency preparedness activities of 20 schools in four districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province that had recently been severely affected by floods. Through face to face interviews and a structured questionnaire(n = 100) we collected data on the four pillars of emergency preparedness:emergency planning, preparation measures, safe school facilities, and hazard education and training. The study revealed that the majority of the sample schools hadexperienced more than one natural hazard-induced disaster,predominantly flooding, yet despite this had not undertaken adequate emergency preparedness activities. There are particular gaps with regard to plans for students with disabilities, the continuity of school operations after a disaster,the presence of maps to identify evacuation routes, the availability of emergency equipment and resources, disaster preparedness guidelines, and psychological first aid and crisis counseling. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities,and threats analysis that our researchers carried out indicates that, although schools in the survey have taken many steps towards flood preparedness, many weaknesses still exist and there remain significant opportunities to strengthen the preparedness level of many schools. Cu doped Mg(OH)_(2) nanoparticles were synthesized with varying concentrations from 0 to 10%by a chemical synthesis technique of coprecipitation.X-rays diffraction (XRD) of the samples confirms that all the samples acquire the hexagonal crystal *** results indicated the solubility limit of dopant in the host material and the secondary phase of CuO was observed beyond 3%Cu doping in Mg(OH)_(2).The reduction in the size of nanoparticles was observed from 166 to 103 nm for Mg(OH)_(2) and 10% Cu doped Mg(OH)_(2)samples,*** shift in absorption spectra exhibited the systematical enhancement in optical bandgap from 5.25 to 6.085 eV.A good correlation was observed between the bandgap energy and crystallite size of the nanocrystals which confirmed the size induced effect in the *** transformation in the sample morphology was observed from irregular spherical particles to sepals like shapes with increasing the Cu concentration in the host *** energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX) analysis confirmed the purity of mass percentage composition of the elements present in the samples.

The lateral guidance objective is to derive the cross track error towards zero with graceful and stable maneuvers and then to keep it as minimum as possible. A nonlinear sliding surface based lateral guidance scheme is proposed here for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs) application with limited actuation. Following the inner(control) and outer(guidance)loop structure, the proposed guidance scheme resides in outer loop and generates reference bank angle commands for the inner control loop. The proposed 1 order SMC algorithm based on nonlinear sliding surface is derived using the kinematic equations for bank-to-turn vehicles. Mathematical proof of existence of sliding mode and actuation boundedness of the closed-loop is also provided. The proposed guidance and control system performance is verified via simulation results for different scenario. A high fidelity nonlinear 6-degrees-offreedom(6-dof) scaled Yak-54 UAV mathematical model is used for flight simulations. Simulation results validated the effectiveness and performance of the proposed lateral guidance scheme.

Decoding molecular mechanisms:brain aging and Alzheimer's disease

This paper presents a novel guidance algorithm for UAVs to follow a 2-D ground track by controlling the lateral cross track deviations. The guidance framework based on sliding mode theory is presented to solve the two dimensional path-following problem. To control the lateral track error of the vehicle during flight, the guidance algorithm generates reference bank angle commands for the vehicle control system i.e., by executing roll maneuvers. Novel nonlinear high performance sliding surface is proposed to reduce the lateral cross track error efficiently. Subsequently, 1storder sliding mode guidance logic is then devised using the proposed manifold for generating reference bank angle commands. Stability of the proposed nonlinear manifold is proved using Lyapunov *** boundedness is proved to avoid saturation of control signals. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is shown via simulation results for a research scaled YAK-54 UAV. Different scenarios（consisting of both small and large lateral errors）in simulation validates the proposed guidance framework and illustrates the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Particulate TiC reinforced 17-4PH and 465 maraging stainless steel matrix composites were processed by conventional powder metallurgy （P/M）. TiC-maraging stainless steel composites with theoretical density 〉97% were produced using conventional P/M. The microstructure, and mechanical and wear properties of the composites were evaluated. The microstructure of the composites consisted of （core-rim structure） spherical and semi-spherical TiC particles depending on the wettability of the matrix with TiC particles. In TiC-maraging stainless steel composites, 465 stainless steel binder phase showed good wettability with TiC particles. Some microcracks appeared in the composites, indicating the presence of tensile stresses in the composites produced during sintering. The typical properties, hardness, and bend strength were reported for the composites. After heat treatment and aging, an increase in hardness was observed. The increase in hardness was at- tributed to the aging reaction in maraging stainless steel. The specific wear behavior of the composites strongly depends on the content of TiC particles and their interparticle spacing, and on the heat treatment of the maraging stainless steel.

Intelligent Islanding Detection of Multi-distributed Generation Using Artificial Neural Network Based on Intrinsic Mode Function Feature

The integration of distributed energy resources(DERs) into distribution networks is becoming increasingly important, as it supports the continued adoption of renewable power generation, combined heat and power plants, and storage systems. Nevertheless, inadvertent islanding operation is one of the major protection issues in distribution networks connected to DERs. This study proposes an intelligent islanding detection method(IIDM) using an intrinsic mode function(IMF)feature-based grey wolf optimized artificial neural network(GWO-ANN). In the proposed IIDM, the modal voltage signal is pre-processed by variational mode decomposition followed by Hilbert transform on each IMF to derive highly involved features. Then, the energy and standard deviation of IMFs are employed to train/test the GWO-ANN model for identifying the islanding operations from other non-islanding events. To evaluate the performance of the proposed IIDM, various islanding and non-islanding conditions such as faults, voltage sag, linear and nonlinear load and switching, are considered as the training and testing datasets. Moreover, the proposed IIDM is evaluated under noise conditions for the measured voltage signal. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IIDM is capable of differentiating between islanding and non-islanding events without any sensitivity under noise conditions in the test signal.
