Characterization particulate matter from several Chinese cooking dishes and implications in health effects

Cooking fume produced by oil and food at a high temperature releases large amount of fine particulate matter（PM） which have a potential hazard to human health. This chamber study investigated particle emission characteristics originated from using four types of oil（soybean oil, olive oil, peanut oil and lard） and different kinds of food materials（meat and vegetable）. The corresponding emission factors（EFs） of number, mass, surface area and volume for particles were discussed. Temporal variation of size-fractionated particle concentration showed that olive oil produced the highest number PM concentration for the entire cooking process. Multiple path particle dosimetry（MPPD） model was performed to predict deposition in the human respiratory tract. Results showed that the pulmonary airway deposition fraction was the largest. It was also found that particles produced from olive oil led to the highest deposition. We strongly recommend minimizing the moisture content of ingredients before cooking and giving priority to the use of peanut oil instead of olive oil to reduce human exposure to PM.

Endosymbionts are microorganisms present in all plant species, and constitute the subject of interest among the scientific community. These symbionts have gained considerable attention in recent years, owing to their emerging biological roles. Global challenges, such as antimicrobial resistance, treatment of infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis, cancer, and many genetic disorders, exist. Endosymbionts can help address these challenges by secreting valueadded bioactive compounds with various activities. Herein, we describe the importance of plants inhabiting Siberian niches. These plants are considered to be among the least studied organisms in the plant kingdom worldwide. Barcoding these plants can be of interest for exploring bioactive endosymbionts possessing myriad biological properties. A systematic survey of relevant scientific reports was conducted using the PubMed search engine. The reports were analyzed, and compiled to draft this review. The literature survey on Siberian plants regarding endosymbionts included a few reports, since extremely few exploratory studies have been conducted on the plants in these regions. Studies on the endosymbionts of these plants are highly valuable, as they report potent endosymbionts possessing numerous biological properties. Based on these considerations, this review aims to create awareness among the global scientific community working on related areas. This review could provide the basis for barcoding novel endosymbionts of Siberian plants and their ecological importance, which can be exploited in various sectors. The main purpose of this review is to create awareness of Siberian plants, which are among the least studied organisms in the plant kingdom, with respect to endosymbionts, among the scientific community.

Engineering of crystal morphology affects the catalytic and adsorption properties of zeolitic *** the anisotropic diffusion of molecules derived from its topological features,MFI zeolite nanosheets with short b-axis thickness are highly desired materials to reduce diffusion ***,the design and development of eco-friendly synthesis protocols with reasonable cost and high efficiency remain ***,we reported a systematic study on the synthesis of MFI nanosheets using urea as an *** silicalite-1 and ZSM-5 zeolites(MFI type framework structure)with controllable b-thicknesses ranging from 50–200 nm were achieved by optimizing the synthetic parameters including water content,urea and SDA *** concentration of hydroxide anions was found to dominate the crystallization kinetics compared with the counterpart tetrapropylammonium cations(TPA^(+)).To facilitate the crystal growth of MFI zeolites in the presence of urea,the ratio OH−/SiO_(2)has to be higher than 0.2,independent of the TPA+*** role of urea in the assistance of plate-like crystal formation through the inhibition of(010)facet growth was revealed by electron microscopy and infrared(IR)spectroscopy *** developed strategy for morphological engineering is not limited to the MFI-type zeolite and can be applied to other frameworks depending on the intrinsic properties of additive molecules and the interactions between them.

Mechanistic study of substrate-based galvanic replacement reactions

The sacrificial templates used in galvanic replacement reactions dictate the properties of the hollow metal nanostructures formed. Here, we demonstrate that substrate-based Au-Ag nanoshells with radically altered properties are obtained by merely coating silver templates with an ultrathin layer of gold prior to their insertion into the reaction vessel. The so-formed nanoshells exhibit much smoother surfaces, a higher degree of crystallinity and are far more robust. Dealloying the nanoshells results in the first demonstration of substrate-based nanocages. Such cages exhibit a well-defined pattern of geometric openings in directions corresponding to the {111}-facets of the starting template material. The ability to engineer the cage geometry through adjustments to the orientational relationship between the crystal structure of the starting template and that of underlying substrate is demonstrated. Together these discoveries provide the framework to advance our understanding of the mechanisms governing substrate- based galvanic replacement reactions.

Establishment of Rhodiola quadrifida Hairy Roots and Callus Culture to Produce Bioactive Compounds

Rhodiola quadrifida is a rare mountain medicinal plant whose root extracts are used in traditional Chinese medicine as a hemostatic,antitussive,and tonic in the treatment of gynecological *** aim of the study was to obtain *** cultures at different degrees of differentiation in vitro and compare their growth characteristics and the content of salidroside and *** roots were obtained by incubating cotyledons and hypocotyls in a suspension of Agrobacterium rhizogenes strain *** presence of the rolB and rolC genes was proven by polymerase chain *** obtained roots were cultivated in Murashige-Skoog medium(MS).Calluses were obtained from the hairy roots in MS medium with the addition of hormones:3 mg/L 2,4 D and 0.5 mg/L *** presence of the main secondary metabolites of ***,salidroside and rosavin,in calluses and salidroside in hairy roots by HPLC/MS was *** content of salidroside in callus culture was significantly higher than in hairy roots,0.158 and 0.047%,*** content of rosavin in callus culture was 0.07%.The content of rosavin and salidroside in callus culture was close to the level of these substances in the rhizomes of *** plants growing in vivo,making this culture promising for its possible biotechnological use.

Bemisia tabaci Biotype Dynamics and Resistance to Insecticides in Israel During the Years 2008-2010

The sweetpotato whitefly Bemisia tabaci（Hemiptera：Aleyrodidae）is an extremely polyphagous insect pest that causes significant crop losses in Israel and *** is a species complex of which the B and Q biotypes are the most widespread and damaging *** change in biotype composition and resistance to insecticide in Israel was monitored during the years 2008-2010 to identify patterns in population dynamics that can be correlated with resistance *** results show that B biotype populations dominate crops grown in open fields,while Q biotype populations gradually dominate crops grown in protected conditions such as greenhouses and nethouses,where resistance outbreaks usually develop after several insecticide *** in previous years,Q biotype populations were widely detected in many regions in Israel,significant domination of the B biotype across populations collected was observed during the year 2010,indicating the instability of the *** population from one year to *** for the changing dynamics and the shift in the relative abundance of *** biotype,and their resistance status,are discussed.

Ecological and habitat ranges of orchids in the northernmost regions of their distribution areas:A case study from Ural Mountains,Russia

The Orchidaceae,which is one of the most interesting families of angiosperms,contains a large number of rare *** their acknowledged importance,little attention has been paid to the study of orchids distributed in northern *** this study,we determined the syntaxonomical diversity and ecological parameters of orchid habitats in two of Europe's largest protected areas,the Pechoro-Ilychsky Reserve and the Yugyd Va National Park(northeastern European Russia),and then compared our findings to those in other parts of orchid distribution *** this purpose,we studied 345 descriptions of plant communities(releves) containing species from Orchidaceae and defined habitat parameters using Ellenberg indicator values with the community weight mean approach,nonmetric multidimensional scaling(NMS),and relative niche *** found that orchids were distributed in eight habitat types and 97 plant *** largest number of orchid species is found in forest *** of the orchid species under study occur in the mires and rock habitats with open *** orchids consistently occur in areas disturbed by human *** addition,our study indicates that the main drivers of orchid distribution across the vegetation types are light and soil *** analysis of the ecological parameters of orchid habitats indicates that some orchid species can be classified as habitat specialists that are confined to a relatively narrow ecological niche in the Urals(e.g.,Goodyera repens,Cypripedium guttatum and Dactylorhiza maculata).Several other species(*** cordata and Dactylorhiza fuchsia) grow under diverse ecological parameters.

Comparative study on yields and quality parameters of argan oils extracted by conventional and green extraction techniques

Argan oil is most frequently sold as pure oil,which can be directly applied topically due to its cosmetological proprieties or ingested in order to provide several health ***'s also commonly mixed into a number of cosmetic products like shampoos,soaps and *** this study we aimed to improve the argan oil extraction yield and quality parameters by comparing the effects of different extraction *** kernel oils were extracted using four methods:mechanical cold press,Soxhlet extraction with n-hexane,supercritical fluid extraction(SFE),and enzyme assisted extraction with three different enzyme solutions cellulase(cellulast),pectinase(Pectinex)and a mixture of carbohydrase enzymes(Viscozyme®).The quality parameters was evaluated by determining the acid,peroxide and iodine values aswell as the extinction coefficients K_(232) and K_(270) as measures of conjugated dienes and trienes,*** results showed that the highest yield(66.37%±3.3%)was obtained by enzyme assisted extraction using the carbohydrases enzymes mixture(Viscozyme®),followed by Soxhlet extraction(59.5%±3.1%)and pectinase extraction(52.03%±3.55%).All argan oils samples obtained by the different methods showed a good oxidation stability,with acid,peroxide and iodine values lower than 0.8 mg/g,15 meq/kg and 110 g/100 g according to the official argan oil norm,*** results of argan oils quality parameters demonstrated that the enzyme extracted argan oils showed low oxidation,with the following quality parameters:acid values(0.4-0.6 mg/g),iodine values(95-100 g/100 g),dienes(K_(232)<2),trienes(K_(270)<0.35),and peroxide values(<1.5 meq/kg).The results proved that the enzyme assisted extraction method can be applied to improve the argan oil yield without affecting the oil *** enzyme extraction method may be a great alternative to solvent and cold press extractions for this eco-friendly processing approach.

Global lung cancer mortality trends and lifestyle modifications:preliminary analysis

Background:According to the Independent High-level Commission on Non-communicable Diseases(NCD)of the World Health Organization(WHO),global reduction in lung cancer mortality has been achieved since the year 2000,although this effect is not sufficient to reach the 30%reduction of mortality from NCDs by the year 2030,as stipulated by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal *** objective of this study was to analyze whether the lifestyle changes implemented by the WHO at country level could have an impact on mortality from this form of ***:WHO statistics,based on the unified mortality and causes-of-death reports of Member-State countries,were used to evaluate global lung cancer mortality trends and make comparisons and assessments of different types of community-based,country-wide ***:The lung cancer mortality decline was associated with the anti-tobacco campaign initiated by the WHO in the last 15 to 20 *** tobacco control remained the major and most successful lifestyle modification *** countries with declining lung cancer mortality,91%of countries had decreasing tobacco prevalence in males and 82%in ***-wide measures to increase physical activity had a strong tendency to be better implemented in countries with declining lung cancer mortality(t=1.79,P>0.05).Other WHO"best-buy"lifestyle modification campaigns(diet and alcohol)had been carried out for shorter periods,and their associations with lung cancer were less strong than *** was no significant difference between countries with declining and increasing lung cancer mortality in the measures for reduction of harmful alcohol use(t=0.92,P>0.05)and unhealthy diet reduction measures(t=0.84,P>0.05).Conclusion:Following WHO"best-buys"should facilitate to move countries towards the NCD including lung cancer mortality reduction *** and communities must embrace these targets with coordinated effective action for better hea
