Modelling of microbial enhanced oil recovery application using anaerobic gas-producing bacteria

Microbial enhanced oil recovery （MEOR） methods apply injection of bacteria to depleted oil reservoirs to produce oil, which had remained unrecovered after the conventional methods of production. The ability ofthermophilic anaerobic bacteria to produce gas as the main mechanism in potential MEOR in high salinities of 70-100 g/L was investigated in this study. Maximum gas production of up to 350 mL per 700 mL of salty solution was produced at a salinity of 90 g/L stably during 2-4 days of experiment. The experimental results were upscaled to the Snorre Oilfield, Norway, and simulated using ECLIPSE software for 27 months. The best scenarios showed that the increase in oil recovery on average was at 21% and 17.8% respectively. This study demonstrated that anaerobic bacteria used in biogas plants could be an attractive candidate for MEOR implementation due to their ability to withstand high temperature and salinity, and produce gas in large volumes.

Thermal infrared satellite imagery is increasingly utilized in permafrost *** useful application of the land surface temperature(LST)products is classification and mapping of landscapes in permafrost regions,as LST values can help differentiate between frozen and unfrozen *** article describes a new approach to the use of *** essence of the new approach lies in the fact that in the territory where it is impossible to determine(indicate)the state of the underlying ground according to the same morphological characteristics(relief,vegetation,soil composition,etc.),the LST parameter,which reflects the thermal state of the landscape,allows as an additional criterion(indicator)identify frozen/un-frozen *** this work,using the above approach,a map has been compiled,which shows the permafrost natural-territorial complexes of the Elkon Massif,Eastern Siberia,including topography,slope aspect,slope angle,vegetation,snow cover and *** map provides a more detailed and updated description of permafrost distribution in the study area.

Treecode algorithms are widely used in evaluation of N-body pairwise interactions in O(N)or O(NlogN)*** they can provide high accuracy approximations,a criticism leveled at the methods is that they lack global *** this work,we study the effect of smoothness on the accuracy of treecodes by comparing three tricubic interpolation based treecodes with differing smoothness properties:a global C^(1) continuous tricubic,and two new tricubic interpolants,one that is globally C^(0) continuous and one that is *** present numerical results which show that higher smoothness leads to higher accuracy for properties dependent on the derivatives of the kernel,nevertheless the global C^(0) continuous and discontinuous treecodes are competitive with the C^(1) continuous *** advantage of the discontinuous treecode over the C^(1) continuous is that,in addition to function evaluations,the discontinuous treecode only requires evaluations of the first derivatives of the kernel while the C^(1) continuous treecode requires evaluations up to third order *** the first derivatives are computed using finite differences,the discontinuous version can be viewed as kernel independent and of utility for a wider array of kernels with minimal effort.

Environmental and geomorphological processes in the mountainous areas of Eastern Siberia is strongly conditioned by the thermal state of permafrost(permanently frozen ground).However,the scarce data about climate and weak of permafrost study have led to the unclarity of mountain permafrost condition in this *** increase in the mean annual air temperature over the past 50 years in the northeastern Siberia by various estimates is from 1.1℃to 3.3℃.So far,almost no information is available on the permafrost response to climatic changes in the *** Kolyma Route(around 2000 km length),connecting Yakutsk and Magadan that crosses 5 climatic types and more than 10 permafrost landscapes,so it seems a suitable path for establishing basic(reference)monitoring *** 12 target boreholes,on the first stage 5 boreholes up to 30 m in depth were drilled and instrumented for measuring temperature at sites adjacent to weather stations in the Verkhoyansk Range from 283 to 1288 m *** we present conception,purpose,and methods for permafrost study project with first preliminary results from the highest weather station of the East Siberia *** following research about geophysical investigations,permafrost landscape description,mapping and spatial modelling,numerical computing,physical modelling of permafrost thickness might be initiated by the Eastern Siberia Permafrost Transect(ESPT)-project.

This paper focuses on the advantages of derivative vegetation indices over simple reflectance- based indices that are traditionally used for remote sensing of vegetation. The idea of using reflectance derivatives instead of simple reflectance spectra was proposed several decades ago. Despite this, it has not been widely used in monitoring systems because the derivatives lack reliable parameters. In addition, most satellite monitoring systems are not equipped with hyperspectral sensors, which are considered necessary for operating with the reflectance derivatives. Here, we present original data indicating that the chlorophyll-related derivative index D725/D702 we derived can be accurately estimated from a reflectance spectrum of 10 nm resolution that would be suitable for most satellite-based sensors. Furthermore, the index is not sensitive to soil reflectance and can therefore be used for testing of open crops. Presence of blanc reflectance is also unnecessary. Preliminary results of index testing are presented. Perspectives on using this and other derivative indices are discussed.

The preparation of hierarchical zeolites with reduced diffusion limitation and enhanced catalyst efficiency has become a vital focus in the field of zeolites and porous materials chemistry within the past decades. This review will focus on the diffusion and catalyst efficiency of hierarchical zeolites and industrial catalysts. The benefits of diffusion and catalyst efficiency at two levels of hierarchies (zeolitic component level and industrial catalyst level) from a chemical reaction engineering point of view will be analysed. At zeolitic component level, three types of mesopores based on the strategies applied toward enhancing the catalyst effectiveness factor are presented:(i)‘functional mesopores’(raising effective diffusivity);(ii)‘auxiliary mesopores’(decreasing diffusion length); and (iii)‘integrated mesopores’(a combination thereof). At industrial catalyst level, location and interconnectivity among the constitutive components are *** hierarchical pore interconnectivity in multi-component zeolite based industrial catalysts is exemplified by fluid catalytic cracking and bi-functional hydroisomerization catalysts. The rational design of industrial zeolite catalysts at both hierarchical zeolitic component and catalyst body levels can be fully comprehended using the advanced in situ and/or operando spectroscopic, microscopic and diffraction techniques.

In petroleum-producing territories of West Siberia(Russia),oil well gas flares have a thermal effect on nearby plant *** communities can be used as models for studying plant acclimation to global *** the present study on the effect of the hydrothermal regime at the flare sites on mesophyll and stomatal functional traits of Betula pubescens,leaves were collected from trees at250 m(control site[CS]),200,150 and 100 m(maximum impact site[MIS])from a *** the CS to MIS site,the average annual air temperature increased by 0.5℃and bog water level decreased by 17 *** plants from the MIS,stomata were 16%smaller and density was 20%lower compared to those at the CS,resulting in lower maximum stomatal conductance in plants from the MIS(mean±SE:MIS 0.84±0.05 mol·m^(-2)s^(-1),CS 1.24±0.06 mol·m^(-2)s^(-1);F=12.6,P<0.01).Mesophyll cell volume was 1.9 times lower at MIS than at *** numbers per cell also declined with distance from the flares,from 21(MIS)to18(CS;F=15.6,P<0.001),and chloroplast volume was 24%higher at the CS,whereas the number of mesophyll cells and chloroplasts numbers per unit leaf area were 1.9 and 1.8 times higher at the MIS than at the CS,*** a result,leaves from the MIS had a large total mesophyll cell(Ames/A)and chloroplast(Achl/A)surface area per unit leaf area,resulting in a 46%increase in mesophyll conductance in plants from the ***,structural changes in leaf epidermis consisted of a decrease in stomatal size and number,could lower transpiration losses with higher temperatures and less *** compensate for the reduction in leaf conductance due to a decrease in stomatal conductance under these conditions,an increase in the number of mesophyll cells and chloroplasts per unit area provides a greater gas-exchange area and mesophyll conductance.

Nowadays,the application of renewable energies such as solar energy in the building sector has increased notably considering the adverse impacts of climate change on human life;hence many studies have focused on the application of photovoltaic panels in *** the current study,a 3D computational fluid dynamics(CFD)model has been developed to evaluate the performance of a newly designed building-integrated photovoltaic(BIPV)*** the negative influence of overheating on the lifespan and performance of PV panels,their passive air cooling has been ***,the potential of rooftop-mounted solar panels in passive ventilation of buildings by generating natural convective currents has been *** developed CFD model takes into consideration the effects of radiation,conduction,and buoyancy-driven natural convective currents generated by solar PV panels which are heated due to the exposure to solar radiation heat *** results suggest that applying a high surface emissivity for the part of the roof beneath the PV panels intensifies the natural convective currents which in turn provides better cooling for PV panels with higher cooling effects at higher solar heat *** to a 34%increase in the convective mass flow rate and a 3 K decrease in the mean temperature of the panels were attained by modifying the emissivity of roof *** a 3 K decrease in the operating temperature of the PV panels can enhance their efficiency and lifespan by about 1.56%and 21%,*** on the operating conditions and system characteristics,the BIPV system yielded an air change rate(ACH)in the range of 3-13 which was considered to be highly prevalent in providing the required passive ventilation for a wide range of *** was also observed that the flow dynamics inside the building were affected by both the amount of solar heat load incident on the solar panels and the emissivity of the roof surface behind the panels.
