Temperament and character as predictor of health related quality of life after metacarpophalangeal joint arthroplasty ——Personality and MCP joint arthroplasty outcome

Purpose: To evaluate personality characteris- tics’ impact upon outcome after silicone-based MP arthroplasty in RA patients. Methods: 40 RA patients who had undergone operations on their MP joints were investigated in a one-year fol- low-up. Objective measurement to assess grip strength and active range of motion—Paper- pencil-tests to assess pain during activity and at rest performance, QoL, and personality. Results: Significant improvement was observed in func- tion and pain related scores except for the pain related VAS and in several QoL facets and do- mains. Patients who experienced improvement reported higher scores on the activities of daily living facet of the WHO QoL questionnaire. Those with lower pain showed more independ- ence. The variance of the QoL domain scores, other than social and physical domains, could substantially and meaningfully be explained by variance of objective measures combined with personality scores. Conclusions: Most RA pa- tients’ QoL can be improved by MP arthroplasty despite remaining substantial level of pain. NS and HA seem to play an important role in the adaptation process during the long term, chronic illness;whereas SD represents a tool of coping with the burden of pain and disability. Personal- ity characteristics are highly predictive for QoL suggesting their important mediating role be- tween experienced pain and disability and HR QoL.

An Experimental Study of a Bubble-Driven Liquid Metal Flow Under the Influence of a Rotating Magnetic Field

In this study we investigate the flow structure in a liquid metal cylinder while a bubble-driven flow is superposed with a rotating magnetic field(RMF).Argon gas is injected through a nozzle into a column of the eutectic alloy GalnSn. Without electromagnetic stirring the bubble plume in the centre region of the cylindrical vessel produces a recirculation with high velocities near the free surface while the fluid velocities in the bottom region remain rather *** measurements revealed the potential of the RMF to control both the amplitude of the meridional flow and the bubble distribution and to provide an effective mixing in the whole fluid *** periodic flow patterns were observed in a certain parameter range with respect to variations of the magnetic field strength and the gas flow rate.

In this report we investigated two-dimensionally triptycene end-capped QPPs in terms of their solution and solid-state *** this purpose,a triphenylene based ortho-diamine decorated with two triptycenyl units as well as a phenylene diamine with two non-annulated triptycene units have been *** of condensation reactions with a pyrene-based tetraketone and ortho-diamines yielded a series of QPPs and UV/Vis investigations of the corresponding compounds led to the conclusion,that the QPPs form dimers in solution,which was further supported by ***-crystal X-ray analysis of the triply and quadruply triptycene end-capped QPPs furthermore showed shortπ-π-distances of 3.3-3.4?and a perfect shape match during the dimerization of the triply triptycenyl end-capped QPP making it possible synthon for crystal engineering.

Since the advent of femtosecond lasers,performance improvements have constantly impacted on existing applications and enabled novel ***,one performance feature bearing the potential of a quantum leap for high-field applications is still not available:the simultaneous emission of extremely high peak and average *** applications such as laser particle acceleration require exactly this performance regime and,therefore,challenge laser technology at *** the one hand,canonical bulk systems can provide pulse peak powers in the multi-terawatt to petawatt range,while on the other hand,advanced solid-state-laser concepts such as the thin disk,slab or fibre are well known for their high efficiency and their ability to emit high average powers in the kilowatt range with excellent beam *** this contribution,a compact laser system capable of simultaneously providing high peak and average powers with high wall-plug efficiency is proposed and *** concept is based on the temporal coherent combination(pulse stacking)of a pulse train emitted from a high-repetition-rate femtosecond laser system in a passive enhancement ***,the pulse energy is increased at the cost of the repetition rate while almost preserving the average *** concept relies on a fast switching element for dumping the enhanced pulse out of the *** switch constitutes the key challenge of our *** this challenge could,for the first time,allow the highly efficient dumping of joule-class pulses at megawatt average power levels and lead to unprecedented laser parameters.

In the context of climate change,especially for the temperate continental climate,new potential crop species are emerging,originating from the *** of them is quinoa(Chenopodium quinoa Willd.)with multiple benefits for seed and leaf *** is native to South America,grown mainly for seeds,with a high ecological *** is known about the potential of using quinoa plants as a leafy vegetable for food *** this study,the nutritional and antinutritional content of quinoa leaves was evaluated in three cultivars(Titicaca,Puno,Vikinga),considering different densities and times of *** cultivar had a higher total content of carbohydrates,lipids,proteins and dietary fibers,and lower mineral contents in *** levels of antinutrient compounds were found in Vikinga *** the time of the crop establishment,the highest content of primary metabolic compounds(carbohydrates,lipids,proteins,dietary fibers)was achieved by April 17,the sowing *** densities of 7.7,3.2,and 1.6 ***/ha did not significantly influence the content of compounds with antinutritive role,such as oxalates,saponins or trypsin *** content of mineral elements such as:Fe,Zn,Na and K were significantly influenced by the cultivar,compared to Mg and Ca whose values were insignificant regardless of the treatment.

High prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis in a desert population: results from an exploratory study around the Ounianga lakes in Chad

Real-Time Detection of Unstable Control Loop Behavior in a Feedback Active Noise Cancellation System for In-Ear Headphones

Active noise controls are used in a wide field of applications to cancel out unwanted surrounding noise. Control systems based on the feedback structure however have the disadvantage that they may become unstable during run-time due to changes in the control path—in this context including the listener’s ear. Especially when applied to active noise cancellation (ANC) headphones, the risk of instability is associated with the risk of harmful influence on the listener’s ear, which is exposed to the speaker in striking distance. This paper discusses several methods to enable the analysis of a feedback ANC system during run-time to immediately detect instability. Finally, a solution is proposed, which identifies the open loop behavior parametrically by means of an adaptive filter to subsequently evaluate the coefficients regarding stability.
