The Greenland ice core from NorthGRIP （NGRIP） contains a proxy climate record across the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary of unprecedented clarity and resolution. Analysis of an array of physical and chemical parameters within the ice enables the base of the Holocene, as reflected in the first signs of climatic warming at the end of the Younger Dryas/Greenland Stadial 1 cold phase, to be located with a high degree of precision.

Role of brain serotonin in modulating fish behavior

The organization of the brain serotonergic system appears to have been highly conserved across the vertebrate subphylum. In fish as well as in other vertebrates, brain serotonin （5-HT）, mainly acts as a neuromodulator with complex effects on multiple functions. It is becoming increasingly clear that acute and chronic increase in brain 5-HT neurotransmission have very different effects. An acute 5-HT activation, which is seen in both winners and losers of agonistic interactions, could be related to a general arousal effect, whereas the chronic activation observed in subordinate fish is clearly linked to the behavioral inhibition displayed by these individuals. Fish displaying diver- gent stress coping styles （proactive vs. reactive） differ in 5-HT functions. In teleost fish, brain monoaminergic function is also related to life history traits.

Surface sediment diatoms from the western Pacific marginal seas and their correlation to environmental variables

Diatom data of 192 surface sediment samples from the marginal seas in the western Pacific together with modern summer and winter sea surface temperature and salinity data were *** results of canonical correspondence analysis show that summer sea-surface salinity(SSS) is highly positively correlated with winter SSS and so is summer sea-surface temperature(SST) with winter *** correlations between SSSs and SSTs are less positively correlated,which may be due to interactions of regional current pattern and monsoon *** correlations between diatom species,sample sites and environmental variables concur with known diatom ecology and regional oceanographic *** results of forward selection of the environmental variables and associated Monte Carlo permutation tests of the statistical significance of each variable suggest that summer SSS and winter SST are the main environmental factors affecting the diatom distribution in the area and therefore preserved diatom data from down core could be used for reconstructions of summer SSS and winter SST in the region.

The Nordic countries have experienced multiple glaciations and intervening interglacials during the last ca. 2.5-3 million years. Although evidence from Greenland and Iceland shows that ice sheets started to expand some time before 3 Ma, little is known about the glaciations and intervening interglacials older than the last Glacial Maximum due to repeated phases of glacial erosion and reworking. The extensive Saalian glaciation （c. 140 ka BP） contributed to high sea levels in Greenland and in the Baltic area during the early part of the last interglacial （Eemian）. Temperatures were about 5 ℃ higher during the Eemian than they are today and the Greenland ice sheet was reduced to about half of its present size, causing globally higher sea levels than we have today. Ice extent in Fennoscandia was restricted during early Weichselian stadials, but middle Weichselian ice advances in Scandinavia reached as far as Denmark. During the Last Glacial Maximum, large ice sheets were present in all Nordic countries and coalesced with neighboring ice sheets. Deglaciation commenced around 17-15 ka BP in most areas and was promoted by rapidly rising global sea level and glacial isostasy. The Younger Dryas cold event（c. 12.6-11.5 ka BP） is seen as a short-term re-advance, still-stand or fluctuation of land-based ice sheet margins. Around 7-9 ka BP ice sheets had disappeared or had attained their present size. While uplift is still going on in some regions, others are subject to submergence. The different stages of development of the Baltic Sea are an example of how the intricare interplay between glacial eustasy and isostasy influences sedimentation, basin size and drainage patterns.

N-Acetylcysteine Amide(NACA) Reduces Cell Death after Oxidative Stress in a Porcine Embryonic Kidney Cell Line

Introduction: Oxidative stress may have detrimental effects on different structures of the cells, such as the DNA. Recently, we have published a study demonstrating that N-Acetylcysteine amide (NACA) displayed anti-inflammatory properties on the brain after exposure to oxidative stress in an established neonatal piglet model, imitating perinatal asphyxia. As different clinical studies have shown an association between the severity of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and damage of the kidneys, we investigated a possible protective effect of NACA against H2O2-induced oxidative stress using a porcine epithelial-like embryonic kidney cell line (EFN-R). Objective: To investigate a potential protective effect of NACA on cells of a porcine embryonic kidney cell line exposed to H2O2. Methods: We subjected the cells to different concentrations of H2O2 for variable time periods, seeking the optimal dose-response for the experiments. Based on the results of these investigations, we exposed the cells to 100 μMol of H2O2 and/or 750 μM of NACA for 24 hours. Some of the cells would receive NACA either one hour before or one hour after exposure to H2O2. Results: The viability of the investigated EFN-R cells revealed that both, the group treated with NACA before exposure to H2O2 and the group treated with NACA after exposure to H2O2, exhibited significantly higher cell viability compared to the H2O2 group (p < 0.001 and p < 0.01, respectively). Discussion: The increased viability of the cells may indicate that NACA could play an important role in reducing oxidative stress. Taking the results from our previous study into consideration, our findings may strengthen the theory that NACA may have organ protective properties for neonates exposed to oxidative stress.
