Purpose Among the several methods to measure ^(222)Rn in water,the liquid scintillation counting(LSC)technique is one of the most sensitive and widely used when analysing non-saline waters by liquid extraction,providing excellent accuracy,precision and low-level detection *** using the liquid scintillation counter Tri-Carb 3170 TR/SL(Perkin-Elmer)it is not possible to make an automatic determination of the alpha/beta discrimination parameter,being necessary to evaluate the pulse decay discriminator(PDD)value manually to the ^(222)Rn *** this work,we describe the steps to perform the calibration of that type of *** The method consists in the preparation of standard samples from a ^(226)Ra certified standard solution and the adjustment of the PDD value by hand until the percentage of alpha events reaches a plateau of a near-constant fraction of total *** process consists in taking several measures between PDD 80 and 200 with 15 min counting time *** the plateau,the alpha/beta ratio was used to determine the plateau final range as well as the optimum PDD *** that,the calibration standards and blanks were measured and the region of interest(RoI)was established by finding the maximum value for the figure of merit(FoM)in the upper and lower *** The optimal PDD value of 148 was established by the alpha/beta ratio,and after that,it was possible to measure ^(226)Ra standards to perform the *** efficiency of(9.758±0.035)×1^(0-1) was *** routine measurements,a detection limit of about 0.50 Bq L^(-1) is achieved for a 120 min counting *** evaluate the uncertainty budget,the uncertainties of the net count rate,the efficiency,the sample amount and the decay correction factor were *** A method was developed for the calibration of LSC Tri-Carb 3170 TR/SL with the optimization of the PDD using a ^(226)Ra standard *** acquisition to obtain the plot of the variation

Doxycycline induces bone repair and changes in Wnt signalling

Doxycycline （DoX） exhibits anti-inflammatory and MMP inhibitory properties. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of DoX on alveolar bone repair. Controls （CTL） and DoX-treated （10 and 25 mg. kg- 1） molars were extracted, and rats were killed 7 or 14 days later. The maxillae were processed and subjected to histological and immunohistochemical assays. Hematoxylin-eosin staining （7th day） revealed inflammation in the CTL group that was partly reversed after DoX treatment. on the 14th day, the CTL group exhibited bone neoformation, conjunctive tissue, re-epithelization and the absence of inflammatory infiltrate. DoX-treated groups exhibited complete re-epithelization, tissue remodelling and almost no inflammation. Picrosirius red staining in the DoXlo group （7th and 14th days） revealed an increased percentage of type I and III collagen fibres compared with the CTL and DoX25 groups. The DoXlo and DoX25 groups exhibited increases in osteoblasts on the 7th and 14th days. However, there were fewer osteoclasts in the DoXlo and DoX25 groups on the 7th and 14th days. Wnt-lob- immunopositive cells increased by 130% and 150% on the 7th and 14th days, respectively, in DoX-treated groups compared with the CTL group. on the 7th day, Dickkopf （Dkk）-I immunostaining was decreased by 63% and 46% in the DoXlo and DoX25 groups, respectively. on the 14th day, 69% and 42% decreases in immunopositive cells were observed in the DoXlo and DoX25 groups, respectively, compared with the CTL group. By increasing osteoblasts, decreasing osteoclasts, activating Wnt lob and neutralising Dkk, DoX is a potential candidate for bone repair in periodontal diseases.

Ecosystem services(ES)delivery in quantity and quality are essential to improve human ***,often a considerable part of ES provisioning depends on the use of private land(e.g.,flood retention,carbon sequestration,water purification).In this context,the operationalization and implementation of ES concept may collide with legal property ***,it is essential to find constructive mechanisms to engage and encour-age private owners to implement sustainable land uses to reduce the onsite and offsite impacts of their *** paper aims to identify if ES delivery can be constrained by legal private land and how it can be *** is undeniable that land-use changes(e.g.,urbanization,agriculture intensification,and land abandonment)affect the territory’s capacity to deliver ES in quality and *** changes,especially land abandonment,are in-creasing the tradeoffs among ES(e.g.,between carbon sequestration and water yield).Land-use planning should consider these ***,incorporating ES into spatial plans is crucial for stakeholders to understand the impacts of land-use change in the loss of ES *** information can be transmitted through maps that communicate the message in a simplified *** owners can easily perceive the ES relevance that their land can provide if an understandable message is *** this can be a good solution,conflicts can appear even with the implementation of schemes such as Payment for ES(PES).PES is not always effective and can im-pose losses to farmers,disregard their cultural traditions,or not prevent poverty *** this context,it is crucial to consider local specificities to safeguard PES’s success,create a“win-win”and transform a problem into a *** owners’active participation in implementing sustainable practices or a determined land-use in their properties is vital to achieving global targets such as sustainable development goals.

Ground peach pits: alternative substrate component for seedling production

The exploitation of agro-industrial wastes is a strategy to add value to seedling production and reduce environmental *** production chain for processed peaches generates,approximately,21,000 tons of fruit worldwide,and the pits are used mainly to generate *** objective of the study was to investigate the use of different proportions of ground peach pits(GPP)as a substrate component for seedling growth of Eucalyptus dunnii in the nursery and *** proportions of GPP mixed with either commercial substrate(CS)or with brown peat(BP)were *** physical and chemical properties of the substrates,the morphological and physiological attributes of the seedlings and their correlation with substrate properties were *** GPP increased the density,aeration space and pH and reduced total porosity,liquid retention and electric conductivity of the *** use of this component resulted in hormesis,a biphasic dose–response model in which low levels of exposure to this component stimulated biological performance of plants and high levels of exposure inhibited *** improved seedling growth in the nursery and adequate post-planting development of ***,GPP with CS is recommended at 20%of the total substrate and with BP between 15 and 30%.

Is there stability in the performance of elite half-marathoners?

Near-infrared leaf reflectance modeling of Annona emarginata seedlings for early detection of variations in nitrogen concentration

Nitrogen(N)monitoring is essential in nurseries to ensure the production of high-quality *** spectroscopy(NIRS)is an instantaneous,nondestructive method to monitor *** data such as NIRS can also provide the basis for developing a new vegetation spectral index(VSI).Here,we evaluated whether NIRS combined with statistical modeling can accurately detect early variations in N concentration in leaves of young plants of Annona emargiaata and developed a new VSI for this *** were grown in a hydroponics system with 0,2.75,5.5or 11 mM N for 45 *** we measured gas exchange,chlorophylla fluorescence,and pigments in leaves;analyzed complete leaf nutrients,and recorded spectral data for leaves at 966 to 1685 nm using *** a statistical learning approach,the dimensionality of the spectral data was reduced,then models were generated using two classes(N deficiency,N)or four classes(0,2.75,5.5,11 mM N).The best combination of techniques for dimensionality reduction and classification,respectively,was stepwise regression(PRoC STEPDISC)and linear discriminant *** was possible to detect N deficiency in seedlings leaves with 100%precision,and the four N concentrations with93.55%accuracy before photosynthetic damage to the plant ***,NIRS combined with statistical modeling of multidimensional data is effective for detecting N variations in seedlings leaves of ***.

Changes in social emotion recognition following traumatic frontal lobe injury

Changes in social and emotional behaviour have been consistently observed in patients with traumatic brain injury. These changes are associated with emotion recognition deficits which represent one of the major barriers to a successful familiar and social reintegration. In the present study, 32 patients with traumatic brain injury, involving the frontal lobe, and 41 age- and education-matched healthy controls were analyzed. A Go/No-Go task was designed, where each participant had to recognize faces representing three social emotions （arrogance, guilt and jealousy）. Results suggested that ability to recognize two social emotions （arrogance and jealousy） was significantly reduced in patients with traumatic brain injury, indicating frontal lesion can reduce emotion recognition ability. In addition, the analysis of the results for hemispheric lesion location （right, left or bilateral） suggested the bilateral lesion sub-group showed a lower accuracy on all social emotions.

Analysis on the Impact of Cattle Fattening Technology on Farmer Households in Atabae Timor-Leste

Agriculture is one of the priority sectors in Timor-Leste. Introducing new agriculture technology is crucial to enhance agricultural production. Practicing cattle fattening can increase beef cattle body weight and generate income to the beef cattle farmers. As farmers face problems including agricultural production decline, lack of forages and information and weather unfavourable. The study’s purpose was to examine the impact of adoption of cattle fattening technology on farmer households in Atabae administrative post, Bobonaro municipality in Timor-Leste. There were 200 beef cattle farmers households where randomly selected in four villages in Atabae. It consisted of 65 farmers practicing cattle fattening and 135 farmers non-practicing cattle fattening. Face to face interviews used structured questionnaire. Statistical analysis such as t-test and descriptive analysis were used to examine impact adoption of cattle fattening technology by farmers and factor constraints of cattle production and the solutions of it. The results indicated the average value of cattle and profit were significant different from zero and it is associated with practicing of cattle fattening. The average of labour used on cattle activities, the average of cattle sold, and total cost spent on cattle were not significant different from zero. The percentage of farmers said that factors constraints cattle production were shortage of water and forage (53%) and spend time on culture ceremony and lack of capital (33%). The number of farmers said that they collected water from river, feed cattle with sago and forage (55.3%) and cultivated forage (23.4%). This finding contributes information to the farmers, traders, and Timorese government to continue implementing cattle fattening activities as it enhances farmers’ income and developing cattle production.
